Considering the current sale on GR-2, would anyone care to offer an opinion on what GR-2’s unique selling points are when compared to the other groovebox offerings (thinking specifically about Drambo and Bam)?

Full-featured DAW (Cubasis in my case) is my default for creating all genres of music, but a little bit clunky compared to...

GR2, which is a God-mode creativity sandbox. Though doesn't have as many options for mixing down like in Cubasis, it is very capable of getting full arrangements fleshed out rapidly. See, in Cubasis, I use a piano sound to lay out melody, chords, and bassline (not always in that particular order). In GR2, I can lay out everything my track needs without needing the "piano sketch" first.

Also, now that GR2 has much needed stem export, you can render those and import into a DAW of choice (regardless if on iOS, MacOS, Windows, Linux, etc) for further mixdown. So best of both worlds.

Drambo is a tinkerer's paradise. Fun for in-deprh sound design, but not necessarily my favourite for actual music creation. But ofc ymmv.

Regarding Bam, I just didn't get along with it all too well. I may try to make a quick EP with that sometime in the future though just to see if I can. 😂

EDIT: Jfc, my reply is top of page 63, where one of my previous replies was top of page 62. I feel spotted out. 👀 Lol! 😂

LOL I'm seeking for first one, be it hardware or software
    (I don't count GR2 as a Grooovebox)

I believe my search of a software old-school and limited "groovebox" is a sick... as I don't need it.

  • I don’t quite understand exactly what a groove box is. I’ve struggled a bit to get much out of GR2, but it might be that I’m approaching it wrong. I’m used to jamming in AUM or working in a DAW.

not just sound design. Drambo is my favorite MIDI processor.

Man, I think I need to dig into Drambo a bit more once I hit a music creation block, just to have a play with it.

Sequencers will come and go but Drambo will always drive my state of flow.

I do hope apps I love and turely need last

but I know this is impossible so I welcome new comers and competition.

GR2 = MacOS/iOS, u use it for the best experience for most of the time/thing
Drambo = Linux, u use it when u need some dark magic
Full-features DAW = Windows, u use it when there is no other choices.

Actually u need them all. I'm not joking

what if u need some crazy polyrhythm stuff u can't get except Drambo?
what if u need 50 tracks u can only go for your DAW
but most of the time, I just need GR2 and SAND(for MPE)

    Thanks @jklovemusic.

    very interesting.
because it's very close to how it goes for me:

MacOS & Linux coexist on my computers.
GR2 and Drambo coexist in my live setup.
i don't like and avoid using Windoze and DAWs.

  • @chaocrator said:

Same! 😂 I used to have a Windoze laptop when I had the OP-1 Field, simply for file management on said OP-1 Field. I tried the then latest version of FL Studio (the first DAW I used on Windoze), and I froze up. 🫣 So yeah, Cubasis is as close I come to a DAW environment, and I will never again touch Windoze. (License unlocks, the need for antivirus software, etc, all make Windoze a chore to use.) (Yes, I know it's actually spelled Windows, but the "Windoze" spelling makes me laugh lol.)

Just wonder any reason to get GR-16 for existing GR2 users?

    Goovebox experience?

I doubt I'll use GR-16 much now that Gr-2 is here, but ...

    • iPhone, as @jwmmakerofmusic mentioned
    • AUv3 version
    • Ratchets (called "Stroke" in GR-16)
    • Midi Clock In

Those are all major features I miss a lot in GR-2 and hope will be implemented down the line. AUv3 is the only one of those I've heard isn't under consideration, though maybe that has changed. Of course AUv3 would mean having to strip out all the hosting part from the plugin version, so I can kinda see where he's coming from.

3 cheers for- midi clock in

A workaround for the missing midi clock input is to use Ableton Link: Use an app that offers Link and that has a good midi clock implementation like Loopy Pro or Audiobus for example. Sync Loopy to your (external?) midi hardware, enable Ableton Link and let it run in the background. You can now enable Link in GR-2 and it will sync via Loopy Pro to the external clock source.

  • And yay! It now has Link Start/Stop too. 👍🏼

  • so, Launchpad Mini mk3 support and MIDI file import have landed in latest and greatest 1.1.4.

  • And MIDI file import should make some people happy!

That's a great surprise for today! Just tried with my LP mini mk3. I have to say one of the best Launchpad implementations I came across so far: Lots of functionality and it is possible to seamlessly switch between GR-2 session modes and user modes.
    Thanks a lot Jimaudio!

Would appreciate an option to either load my last Pattern or load a Pattern of choice eg. My INIT on app start up, as an alternative to how it works now.

    Still bugs me.

  • Can I ask, can I record melodies and basslines on the fly, like you can in Drambo? In Drambo, the music can be playing, I hit record, and the loop doesn't start recording until I start playing, which is genius. And means I can create new melodies/basslines as I go.Is this possible in Groove rider 2? If so, i'll buy tonight!

Yes, though unlike Drambo there isn't an "auto grow" capability unless you record to the song timeline. you need to set the loop length in advance.

Damnit, I didn't know how to phrase the auto - grow aspect, but it's amazing. Really hope grooverider implement this, its amazing. Opens everything up for such creativity.

Yep months ago. He never responded, didn’t even acknowledge. Nothing. 👎

    Thank you..

How do you do midi import for the’ Drum Racks’? Pure Acid midi import work ok…

Importing those melody Midi Sequences and fitting them to a new scale works better than imagined..

    Nice..

Looks like a bug to me. They (GM Drum files) import but only play the kick for all notes.
