I've been dreading this. I wish the app would have made money for the developer and gotten audio and automation for au. I would have loved to see Obsidian ported as an AU also. NS1 is why I'm into iOS music stuff. With out Blip Interactive iOS and I would've been two ships in the night sailing by each other, never to meet...

I used to be an okay/mediocre music producer. Then along came Nanostudio 2, and I wouldn't be anywhere near the producer I am today without it. In fact, when I became serious about client work a couple years ago, I did said client work in Nanostudio 2.

But then, early last year I got a sinking feeling that someday this dreadful day would come where NS2 would be discontinued. Many people (NS2 loyalists) would say I'm crazy, that it'd never happen, to calm down. But I kept floating between iOS DAWs to try and ascertain the right alternative DAW for me just in case this day would come. I recently finally settled on Cubasis 3 for client work. It works a treat.

And then JimAudio released Groove Rider 2, which in many ways reminds me of NS2 (although more limited than NS2 in many aspects, but has a similar workflow). I wouldn't necessarily make all genres of music in GR-II like I do in Cubasis 3, but GR-II is perfect for HipHop and EDM for me personally. Quite a treat.

Bottom line to all this rambling - if Nanostudio 2 does indeed go the way of the dodo, there's Groove Rider 2 as a decent alternative.

  • Thanks for the Groove Rider 2 suggestion. Got it but haven’t had time to put into it. Logic is where i sequence in ios and what replaced NS2. Then it goes to the mac for further butchering. I tend to spend more time on the mac with Ableton right now but i do like the fact that i can air drop from logic ios to logic mac.

Logic is pretty great. Although Logic just didn't click for me. It's one helluva deep app though. I just simply prefer Cubasis' workflow personally as it gets the job done without much fuss. But then again, I'd probably use Logic more if I had a Mac which also had Logic on it. Sounds great.

But then again, then again, if I had a Mac, would I really use Logic, or would I go straight for Live or Bitwig? 🤔💭 Maybe Live since that's the DAW that many of the EDM producer greats use such as KSHMR for instance.

But yeah, definitely take some time to learn Groove Rider 2. Sadly, no stem export at this current time, but I read in a different thread that Mr. Pavloff said it's on its way. And given how you explained your workflow, stem export would definitely be a necessity for you. :)

They are back, but trying to download them consistently fails. Is it just me or is it a general problem?

I managed it on my iPhone without issues. Haven't tried on the iPad as yet.

NS2 is the reason I got into music production. Sad to see it go… Let’s have a petition for selling of the source code, if someone is interesting in working on the app development further.

Unfortunately, it seems there just isn't a market for it. There are some interesting discussions happening over on Reddit.

I don't think Matt will ever release the code or even give it to other dev. Partially understand why ... Thing is, you write a LOT of things differently (expecially in terms of code documentation) when you know other devs will work on it too.. If you don't do this, you usually doesn't want to put your code out of your hands cause you simple feel like it is not good enough, it is not written in clean and understandable way for other devs. Not sure if this is Matt's case but i bet it is cause it's case for the most of us :-D At least me - i am always suffering a "impostor syndrome" regarding my own code lol.

We all must simply admit this is closed chapter. This is life, not always things with huge potential make it into full realization of that potential. It's endlessly sad - honestly probably i can't remember more sad thing in my life than how NS2 ended - but it is what it is. We must just accept it.

Maybe in some parallel universe he made it.

Seems the internet is full of people speaking in "Matt's" name on many occasions but yet I don't remember hearing a single statement from"Matt" regarding this 😉

I spent more than six years communication with him, we discussed ALL kind of things (not just developement related) so i am considering him as my friend. Yeah, i can't tell with 100% certainity that he would do or wouldn't do something, i would say there is very high likelihood it is like i said (especially because we discussed this thing back then - possible scenarios of how to continue with NS2 development)

    Many thanks for that. :)

Offloading did not work for me, but completely uninstalling and then reinstalling fixed it.

  • Moved on years ago.

That said, great app, great UI and a shame Obsidian wasn’t released as an AUv3. Had a blast with NS2 at the time, sad to see it go this way. Nice move though from Matt to make it free!

Yes. Stem export was absolutely a necessity with NS2. Between bitwig and live go for live, i have both and ableton live is more developed. Check out Reason also, its the funest DAW out. A total blast to use. > @dendy said:

  • The original NS on my iPhone 3G blew my mind and I made a ton of music using that and beatmaker 2.

Shame to see NS2 disappear and would happily pay for Obsidian AUv3 fwiw.

Sure I believe there have been a few people involved in creation of NS2 and hardcore fans (me included) we appreciate your contribution @dendy. I am just rooting for the project not to die and the code not be buried on some old HDD in Matt's basement, since it's a really a phenomenal app and in hands of an enthusiastic dev / company could evolve further.

  • Not sure why anyone would want to take on something that clearly didn’t make the creator enough money.

  • edited February 13

In my opinion, one of the causes of NS2’s failure was the circle (I assume betatesters) that surrounded the development from the beginning. It felt like they set development guidelines that did not align with a large portion of the users. The betatesters’ nonsense of pushing for the iPhone version before audio tracks, implying that they knew what the rest of the users needed, or their aggressiveness in the early days when users started noticing some of the issues… It gave the impression that there was a close environment around Matt that had too much influence and ultimately led to what happened

And that circle surely also influenced the expectations they created for Matt, trying to sell the idea that NS2 was going to disrupt the market and become the de facto tool for all music production on iOS.

Why not if money aren’t that much an issue ..

To be completely honest I would love to try, at last as hobby project - at the end, when i look back how much time i wasted on social networks just in last 5 years - to use that time on something more meaningful would be … whatever, maybe in next life in another universe 🤣

Anyway, we had a great time back then !!

If at all possible, get ahold of a PC or Mac and back the NS2 app with the free or paid version of iMazing in case Matt tires of keeping up with the $99 per year to keep it on the App Store. I don’t really think he’d do that, but having a backup is worth the effort.

    It's a pity.
Though I only downloaded it when it was set free it was one of
the apps that was I supposed to get and didn't get round to getting it.
I've been seeing forum users rave on about NS2 for years
and now I can find out why however I wished it was because
the app was on sale not because it was being sunsetted.

Thanks you Matt for setting it free.
