His insulting way of expressing his opinion.

  • I love sound I love music. I dig a groove, a Tibetan monk playing a cave…The bird outside the window, the babbling brook and the breeze finding its way through the trees. . Everything is music

Well said, albeit Rabin has a caveat for that

  • I only watched about a minute of the video, but I'd be very surprised if this guy hates looping as much as he claims. This polemic is likely a exaggeration of his true opinions, either for rhetorical impact or for clicks, or for both, no?

Seems a little like playa hating’ lol
Ed Sheeran would have a lot to say about this subject, him and his 50 million followers, 4 Grammy wins and 17 nominations…
    Professor Rabin who??? 😂
    I’m being shady
But, honestly this is kinda what made Ableton (Session) standout as software
I personally feel looping is an amazing songwriting technique, to get an idea going.
At the same time, some bad looper needed to see this post from Professor Rabin lmao

Oh hell yah, he knows this shtick is pure algo food.

    I'm conflicted about looping.
There are few things I like better than watching a skilled and practiced musician looping live.
There are few things I think lead to boring and stilted compositions more than composing with a looper.
There is no other way I ever compose or play these days.
I bore of my stuff after looper 4-16 looper tracks and delete or forget about them.
I have more fun than I have ever had musically with a looping workflow.
I generate more ideas that could become songs if I cared to take them to the next level than I ever have.
My chops have improved more since Loopy Pro came out than they did in the prior 30 years of playing.
I would have given a finger (on my strumming hand) if Loopy Pro available was when I was performing years ago.
I never perform live any more. 😂

  • Looping is fun.

    Wait for it...

  • that is dope AF

    (ps. needs more headband)

Attempting to gain views from rage bait in and of itself is embarrassing enough,
Yet, this person surpasses the initial humiliation any adult should feel while filming themselves outside giving a shit opinion,
To then use 'homeless' as a pejorative.

All to end up in a half thought out screed going on about loopers needing to do what? join or create a band? Because that's an option or idea for everyone? This farted out opinion reeks of classism. Punching down is hideous.

A shame too because I actually agree in some parts with needing to collab more with others.
The idea of a solo artist making a career on their own, if their goal is to play live and make records, is fanciful is what I mean.

But I can't even half co-sign with this guy cause the delivery is shittier than any of looper i've seen play live or on video.
Couple that with his behavior showing himself in a way that has far less empathy and humanity than any homeless person I've ever interacted with.

    Disgusting. Shameless. Soulless.

    Moving on.

    100%. Well said.

Had the chance to open for Andrew Bird once. One of my most magical memory. I'll remember the soundcheck for the rest of my life.

Wow! This guy is beyond outstanding. What a performance! So many cool things going on. He plays violin like a guitar… and a violin… and he sings great blues, too. His energy reminds me of Janis Joplin spilling her heart out. His use of looping is just a little something extra to add to the painting. When I watched this, I thought of the late, great Jaco Pastorius. He used to do a solo bit where he set up a few loops and went to town. The audiences loved it! He was a great musician, and a great entertainer. You need both! I posted one of his performances with Joni Mitchell, somewhere in this thread. I hope you can check it out. Thanks for posting Andrew Bird. I’m now a fan.

Almost wanted to engage after seeing this video, but glad I did here rather than on Youtube to feed their engagement. Appreciate you both taking the time to respond!

As I got burnt a few times on the webs, I now spread this advice : don't feed the troll, you either lose or lose ;) Nothing good ever comes out of it.

  • @oscillotus Joni Mitchell once said… Jaco is a phenomenon. I had the pleasure of seeing Weather Report four times. Before Jaco, they were dead boring. Jaco was a rock star! This particular performance pales in comparison to others. He would sprinkle “dance powder” on the stage floor and move like James Brown. I accidentally met him in 1980. He was far out!

Will definitely check him out more. He seems like a great performer, and I'm a sucker for groovy basslines. Thanks for taking the time :)

Jaco was one of the greatest musicians of his era. He changed what it meant to be an electric bass player even more than Hendrix re-defined the electric guitar. His life was tragic.

That Joni Mitchell tour was partly an attempt to keep him occupied with music at a time when mental illness was derailing him.

Check out the solo bass tunes on his first solo LP. Unbelievable. (He was also an excellent drummer and big band arranger )

Jaco Pastorius was a gifted composer too. . Some of his notable compositions include:

    • "Continuum"
    • "Portrait of Tracy"
    • "Teen Town"
    • "The Chicken"
    • "Opus Pocus"
    • "Havona"
    • "Liberty City"
    • "Three Views of a Secret"
    • "(Used to Be a) Cha-Cha"
    • "Come On, Come Over"
    • "Kuru / Speak Like a Child"
    • "Okonkolé Y Trompa"
    • "Forgotten Love"
    • "6/4 Jam"
    • "Balloon Song (12-Tone)"
    • "Time Lapse"
    • "Punk Jazz"
    • "River People"

I read somewhere that near the end he took some compositions to Joe Zawinul for his approval and Joe just couldn’t
give him a strong positive assessment. Joe was a gifted composer but probably not an overly generous human, IMHO.
I think many insecure artists can easily be knock off course by arbitrary judgements. Since Joe and Jaco played in Weather Report for many years there could have been complex interpersonal issues that often surface when one musician is
a gifted performer as Jacobi was and another is more of an intellectual type.

Jaco epitomized the ”live fast, die young” life script.

  • Joe Zawinul was a cruel person and played a big role in Jaco’s unraveling.

  • Wow he really had it rough in the 80s. Truly saddens me. I will take a deep dive in his works tomorrow. From the few snippets I heard, this is right in my alley. I wonder how I could've missed him!!

  • I mean everyone has their thing. For me it would be torture to go see a blues guitarist or any sort of blues type band.

  • I thought the faze of “my music is better then yours” passes after highschool

I think of the line from Blade Runner - the brightest flame burns quickest.

Teen Town and Havona were my wake up calls as an electric bass player. I thought I was really badass until I heard those. After I got over my depression, I pulled out my frets and got busy. I learned how to play Donna Lee from the notation in my Real Book. Does anyone use the Real Book anymore? I just googled it and apparently it's still available... and it's now legal! Fortunately, the copyright police never busted me while we were playing at Nancy's Pizza. We never got paid, but we got all the pizza we could eat... as long as we played On Green Dolphin Street.

I met Zawinul at an unexpected meet and greet. He was a dick. I told him that I had also seen them the night before at the Auditorium Theater. Instead of saying something like "thanks for coming", he just said "Yeah, it was killer" and walked away like I didn't exist. Prior to joining WR, Jaco never drank or got high. Zawinul introduced him to a life of heavy drinking and self destruction. The last time I saw Jaco playing was when he was touring Word Of Mouth with his big band. We went with great expectations, but he was a mess by then. Such a shame. Then he got his ass kicked and died. And so it goes...
