To each their own. In general I agree that IKs overall marketing strat seems greedy and takes advantage of music enthusiats. But their products are generally excellent so whatreyagonnado.
Although I cant for the life of me get virtual midi control working for sampletank...
Not having problems with virtual midi and ST. I'm using Nlog Pro to control ST, and it works fine. I haven't tried any other synth or controllers yet though.
I was trying Chordion. Read about others with issues in Soundprism Pro. Will try others and see..
Thanks for the sampletank splash screen vs pop ups info. A little tacky but that works for me.
I highly recommend scooping up ST if you can. You just can,t beat the sound quality of their instruments. Buy the paid version and in app bundle for best savings. Out of all the sound sets, probably the strings are the weakest. But still pretty good.
My fav patches are pianos, tron strings/flutes/vox, bass (oh man, killer bass sounds), and horns.

I liked the violin, but the cello didn't seem as rich as Gb. That was just after a brief time checking them out though, I didn't do a real A/B comparison.
I wish there were plucked string sounds aside from the pizzicato preset, and steel drums of some kind.
@Simon
GB strings sound more warm. ST strings sound a bit harsh for my liking.

The Melletron strings are great tho. Great for recreating those classic progressive rock songs.
ST virtual midi is maddening! Can't get it to respond to Sound Prism Pro, Cubasis, Musix Pro, or Gestrument. tried MidiBridge to no avail. In ST latency is set Low, connector to B, background audio is on, the weird respond to control changes slider is off. All of the controllers show SampleTank. The IK forum is useless. Any tips?
@TedBPhx - I have the same ST settings but it is working fine with SoundPrism for me. It appears that part A, of ST, is the only part that responds though.
I was having trouble getting it to respond in BM2 but figured it out. Tap the "PARTS" button on the left side, and you will see A, B, C and D parts, each with a different instrument assigned. Choose the one with the sound you want (or assign it). Then tap the top right corner of that part's square where it says "CH 1" (or CH 2 or whatever is there). Tap it until it's at the correct channel to match your input app. You actually have to tap on the "CH" part, not on the middle of the pad itself.
On second thought I went back and tried again after posting that and I'm having trouble too... ST's midi implementation is the worst. I'll keep playing.
Ahhh...thanks for that @jesse_ohio
@jesse_ohio WooHoo! Thank you!
OK, here's what I found:
The SampleTank User Guide sheds some light on the matter. Regarding MIDI:
It makes more sense now. I successfully got SoundPrism to send MIDI control to specific channel(s) or a layered channel. But my results were inconsistent. I could only get a certain part to send, no matter what channels I selected in SP or ST. It works, but not as well as it should.
Got sp pro going. Used multitouch in ST parts to put an organ on ch 1 and strings on channel 2 both lit up. In SP set bass touch 1 to ch 1, chord touch 1 to ch 1 and chord touch 2 to ch 2. Multi timbral bliss. Well, bi-timbral anyway. Now I want ST AB multi out ASAP.
Yeah, I got something like that going too. Seems to work well once you get things hacked together.
I am having a weird issue in ST though. My multitouch for selecting parts isn't working right, or else I'm just an idiot. When I tap one of the Parts, it lights up red. If I tap another part, all 4 of them light up red. I've tried two-finger touching, touching two at once, etc. I can only get ONE or ALL of them selected, not any other combination. Anyone feel like explaining the trick?
EDIT nevermind it's working now. Force closed ST and restarted it and multitouch is working dandy. Not sure how that would even happen.
I touch one, hold it, tap the next, let both go. They don't light up till I let go.
Yeah, mine works fine now that I restarted ST. Weird that it got stuck. Thanks!
Hello to the Forum,
I've been reading the site since day 1 but this is my first post. Major props to AudioBus, loving working with it... And, I blame the all of you for my heavy relapse into app purchasing addiction! LOL Seriously, thanks for all of the great info and leads on apps to pick up...
Anyway, I bought SampleTank to use mostly with BeatMaker 2 and Meteor. ST advertises that it works w/ Virtual Midi... I can get BM2's keyboard to play ST sounds, but the sounds are choppy/distorted...and ST crashes a lot.
Anybody have any success with this kind of setup? Please post any setup tips/instructions...
Thanks.
UPDATE: I'm using an iPad 2, ios 6.1.3
Just been trying my Sampletank presets and have noticed that the 'String Orch 1&2', 'Dark String Orch' and '4Violins' seem to have quite a bit of noise artifacting when I play them.
It's almost sounds like light wind when played at C6 on the keyboard, at C5 its not as noticeable with the exception of the '4 Violins' where it turns to a mid range hum.
All the other strings sound stellar crisp and clear with great tone even at C6 and beyond.
Anyone else noticed this or is it just me ?
DaveMagoo,
I'm getting the same thing. That's very high in the range for the sampled instrument... Maybe it has something to do with that?
Do you have any info about what I posted above re using SampleTank with VirtualMidi to connect to BeatMaker2? I hope I can get it to work. It's by far the main reason I went ahead a bought the app (went all in with the full version and all samples). Shouldn't have assumed it would work well as a sound source for sequencers like Beatmaker 2, Meteor, etc...
@dj8 it's a resources issue. ST is a memory hog, as is BM2. Only way I can get smooth playback on my iPad mini (same specs as iPad 2) is to kill all recent apps or reboot iPad and run them. Also make sure you go to ST menu and set Dock Compatibility Mode to B. should improve things dramatically if you haven't,
I do wish ST was less of a pig though, it's definitely less useful when you can't count on virtual MiDI for serious work. GarageBand has great instrument sounds and works perfectly as a MIDI source with background audio.
jesse_ohio Thanks for the info! I tried switching the Dock Compatibility Mode to B before posting. And restarting and airplane mode, closing all other apps... I should have mentioned that in the original post . It improved things, but didn't fix the problem. I'll play around w it some more...
I've used VIrtual Midi w Garageband a lot, but I wanted the expanded sound set from SampleTank. I find it more inspiring to write with the wider variety of sounds (originally coming from Logic, Reason, FL Studio, etc.., I've been hoping for the day where I could use something like SampleTank in IOS w VM connectivity.)
Well Sampletank is advertising that VM is working... And, this is a forum for AudioBus... So, I'll move this over to their tech support (which hasn't responded so far...)
I hear ya. I didn't mean to imply that you should just switch to GB; you paid good money for ST and it fills a need that GB only touches. I love the sounds in ST and wish it was lighter for the same reasons as you...much greater inspiration for new ideas. I guess it's another motivation to upgrade to an iPad 4, except I don't want another full sized iPad, I love my Mini.
Let us know if you get any useful response from IK!
I'm on an iPad 4 and BM2 and ST still don't play well together. It's been a problem since BM2's inception. ST set to dock B works great with Cubasis though.
I just tried it with my ipad 4 and Bm2 controlling ST, midi channel 1 to 4 controlling all parts.
Dock A is a mess and all sounds have a low bitrate sound.
Dock B seems to work fine with no problems.
All the above is true of my short test with Cubasis.
