My impressions from another thread talking about the PC version (and the mysterious Appstore screenshots:)

Very elaborate slicer/sequencer. You can load up say a 45 sec sample or whatever (No limit on this I believe), zoom in to a part you want to slice, and the slicer will conform to that part when you use its transients detection (it has a sensitivity slider as well). For each of the 16 slices you got your reverse/direction, attack, decay, length, pitch and so on. It can switch to a new part of the sample on the fly when crossing to the next pattern, or switch out sample completely and effortlessly. There's lots of room for being very creative with this slicer. It can also be routed into the effects section, that contains a bunch of cool effects, and includes its own sequencer (think a mini version of Effectrix).

Sugar Bytes being Sugar Bytes, they do things their own way so to speak. Which is great (looking at you Turnado, Effectrix, Consequence etc etc). So they've added a 303-style bassline synthesizer, that can make some beefy sounds indeed. It has 3 different filter types, not your low/hi/band pass, but your sugar bytes shiznit filters. Can also be routed into the effects sequencer. A basic drums sequencer, kick, snare and hihat, 16 beats per drum pattern, which sounds kinda basic, and it is, for a reason. All 3 drum parts have a couple off different articulations per hit (like closed or open hihat). 30 something kits, with sub variations/samples on each drum part, and things like pitch, transients etc as well.

Plenty of patterns, bars whatever to build a complete track. Or just have fun making some small cool beats, new sounds etc, whenever. It's a pretty fast thing to get something going with so..

A nice juicy limiter/comp thing can be applied on the end of all this, to give it that smash-y sound, thumping sound etc.

iOS specific things I can think of right now...

It syncs to your iDAW etc, and it keeps track of the playhead/pointer in the iDAW. It's as good as you're gonna get out of iOS right now.

No zoom needed on this, the interface works beautifully on the iPad.

Expanded FX routing, with a per FX routing, is still very much on the table. Right now it's kinda all or nothing.

Will add if more things come to mind..

    Thanks @ChrisG.

As someone who writes EDM with caustics or any other stand alone synth, how can I add this into my workflow?
I use other SB effects apps to add flavor to my songs, however this one needs a source sample.

  • Audioshare? Also, looks like no annoying zooming a la Turnadi/Wow - true?!

Think of this as down to basics groovebox with its 303 style baseline sequencer and drum sequencer, with a very very good/versatile slicer attached. And an fx section. Best way is just to download the desktop demo from their site and see if it's for you.

No zoom. Works great (otherwise I would have told them;)

  • ^ yay! What a good wedding gift! Lol

  • Oh - do you know of any plans for Audioshare?

  • Instabuy...
Played with the pc demo when it came out but this is even better :D

  • Sounds interesting. Not available yet on the US store. Have no plans to get married today, but may indulge myself anyway...

  • Yup not available here either, just checked

I never thought to ask them. Right now it uses the ios general pasteboard and AudioCopy. But import/export with AudioShare sounds like a great alternative to have, especially with Audioshares new editing capabilities in the next version. I'll ask about it. Or scream like a baby until it gets implemented :)

Btw, Sugar Bytes are just a very small and tight group of dudes & dudettes. Not a big company by any means. I know they keep their ears and eyes close to iOS music community (as also evident by their frequent updates with fixes and user suggestions added to their existing apps). Send 'em a mail with the AudioShare thing, point them to Liljedahl. Alternatively point Liljedahl to them;)

Thanks, Chris. I will do so. :) i think the two apps would work hand in glove. Audioshare is the de facto audio file hub for iOS, and supporting it would only help SugarBytes, I think!

Ps nice to hear that there are dudettes involved!

  • downloading...

  • It's out now.

  • Still not on the AU store

  • Yeah, if they're counting votes, I agree with The Tiger, at this stage in the game AS is a big, big plus...

  • Not my cup of tea but i like that SB continues to bring their stuff on iOS.Count me in again if they release cyclops ;-)

....and not out here in the little American outpost either (yet)....quite dispiriting, may have to go and do some work.

  • Out now on the US east coast. 20$

It's a shame it's still dance/ electro oriented.not my cup of tea.will pass on this one.

You could put anything into the slicer and mute the drum machine and bass synth. That's what I'm planning on doing. :)

Oh sure, you posh east coast silver spooners get served first....

  • edited November 2014

Yeah the slicer is where it's at. Drum machine is usefull too
The effects sequencing is great too

  • It worries me somewhat that when I search 'Egoist' all I get is:

Could I Be a Selfish Narcissist Jerk? (HD) by Ezvid Inc.
    https://appsto.re/us/SHjbC.i

My more paranoid self thinks that perhaps this is a (very) elaborate joke at my expense. Impressive effort though, if it is :)

  • Yea off topic but when i search for sugar bytes or egoist nothing pops up, but if i follow a link i can see it in the app store.

Is it me or the store?

  • edited November 2014

same here, couldn't find it via the search, had to use the link

    https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/egoist/id859084874?ls=1&mt=8

  • It's still flushing through the Appstore system.

I asked about the name, but couldn't get a straight answer on that, I just figured that it might've something todo with people becoming egoists when using the app, keeping the computer/iPad aaaall to themselves when having fun with this one. I rly don't know ha :)

  • Happens to me regularly, perhaps the store search function takes some time to index new apps.
Didn't do a search for this though. Not for me at all this type of thing. It does look great, though, like most of their stuff. But the DJ/Dance/Groove thing just doesn't appeal to me at all.

Ah well, plenty of other, more interesting (to me) stuff to come...

  • Good to know its not me!

My ego wouldnt allow it anyway haha

  • Ah yup link works in AU store too. Cheers

  • Thanks for the info, @ChrisG

  • $20, 376MB (pretty large). Must be some built-in samples or something?

On the plus side, is this a Sugar Bytes app that finally uses the whole screen on an iPad? They're still clutching onto that dinky little text, though. Other than that, it's a very nice looking app...

Like @Flo26 said above, I kind of want this, but I would end up using a small portion of the app. It's also probably functionality that could be done with Sector or the Abu Dhabi (Gadget), yet those apps (cool as they are) don't tend to fit my style of music.

    Exciting release, though!
