Please please please release something that accurately models the filter in a JX8P. Please.

But but, the 8P is kinda weak (says the long term 3P owner :D)

    Obviously I disagree.

I've owned a lot of Roland keyboards and modules over the years. Even the weird little Alpha Juno. And while the Jupiter/Juno sound is rightfully famous, the JX8P has an important position in electronic and pop-electronic music.

Unfortunately, its character is unique, due in no small part to that filter, the qualities of which have, as far as my ear is concerned, only ever been reasonably accurately modeled by a now ancient independent VST project. Even Roland's own JX8P "virtual" model - which I have access to in my Jupiter XM - is only close, but no cigar.

The patch Waveaura, used by Edgar Froese, is sort of a lifelong benchmark for me. If an app could reproduce that (mostly) faithfully, I would shower its author with simoleans.

I have been a fan of the late Edgar Froese since the early 70s and have many of his early solo albums, please could you suggest some tracks that uses the Waveaura Patch. My favourite album is Pinnacles IMO
    Mike

The sound I believe is Waveaura shows up in the last major melodic segment of Logos Part 1, which was repurposed as "The Silver Crosses" in their soundtrack for The Keep. It confuses me, though, since everything I can find about that setup says they were using Jupiters, not the JX. So I'm probably mistaken.

You can get the sound by grabbing that old VST from https://sites.google.com/site/mlvst0 and then looking around for the factory patch bank sysex. There are links on that site and I've found a bunch of others.

I know I've heard Waveaura and Voices in Froese/TD, but I'm having a hard time nailing it down at the moment. Which is fine, my mind is going anyway. If you get it loaded, give it a listen and let me know what your aural memory digs up.

  • Excited. Been beta testing it for a few weeks. It’s a great sounding synth. And it’s fun to program and manipulate patches.

    That’s good to know

  • So I preordered J8. Is that money reserved on my account or can I spend it? I would not wanna be on release day and with unsuffisant funds.

I think if you try and spend the amount reserved for the J8 you would be instantly notified, there is only 24 hours to go now, put some thick gloves on so you can’t tap the BUY tab for a different app 🤣

Thanks for the info, Just listen to part 1 of Logo’s, I hear the sound you are talking about and can recall it being used on many TD albums, but also listening to some Johannes Schmoelling albums, he also uses this same or very similar sound.
The OB-Xd2 and probably DSP Discovery app have this sound too, I will have a play around.

Oooh, if you can get that sound out of Discovery I'd love to know the patch parameters. I wouldn't think the OB could do it, because the filter just doesn't have that weird throaty resonance.

The Discovery has just had a massive update, all the Menus, Bank and Preset listing is bigger and easier to select, the only down side is the preset list is now just one long column that you have to scroll, same with the bank list, whereas the old style lists were better for “at a glance” selection.

For those asking about the upcoming app inspired by the Prophet-5

I’ve been messing with the Native Instruments Pro 53 source code since they open sourced it a couple years ago. Great synth, no question. But building Super J8 taught me a ton about making digital feel properly analog, and I kept thinking yeah, I can make this sound a little more alive.

Same sound everyone loves, but with that fat, expressive hardware vibe like the Super J8. And this upcoming Pro-5 has a filter inspired by the NI Prophet too, so it still has that classic retro VST nostalgia. 🤌

ETA is probably a couple months.

Plus, the entire original Prophet controls can fit on a single screen

And for anyone asking about the CS-80 one, that’s getting full MPE. If all goes well, I’m hoping to circle back and add MPE to Super J8 & this Prophet inspired app later this year after the CS-80 is out. If you buy Super J8 now, you’ll still get the MPE upgrade free even if the app is $29.99 by then.

Red Sky Lullaby bank just added and will be free in app on release.
His Longhold Ambient Preset at the end is pretty epic

  • DMT Cymatics bank of 128 presets also included free. He's got 18 instances running here.
    I don't recommend that. But apparently it's possible 😯

Does the filter sound like an IR3109?

That would be interesting to find out if the Super J8 filter is modelled on the Roland IR3109 chip, here are other products using this same chip:

Funny thing is that even though it’s the same chip family, a real Jupiter 8 filter doesn’t really behave like the Juno filters at all. It’s hard to explain unless you’ve had time on a real one, so I definitely don’t expect anyone to just take my word for it.

But if you listen around to a bunch of the higher end Jupiter 8 style emulations, a lot of the filters end up landing in a pretty similar zone. To my ears, the one that really stands out is the System 8, which a lot of people consider the closest Jupiter 8 style thing out there. And while I’m not claiming Super J8 is “the most accurate” or anything, I do think it gets closer to that low end System-8 behavior than most of the other options I’ve tried.

Had an official Roland Cloud Pack Maker hit me up during beta and tell me he was impressed with the filter, which honestly meant a lot. The low end growl is what I've been obsessing over, because that's where I feel like most emulations fall a little short.

Still planning to keep improving the filters and adding more options down the road. But if you're curious and on the fence, I think the Super J8 might be the best analog emulation on the market at the $8 price point :D

  • So….. Super J8. Then Prophet. Then CS-80. In addition to Zenology GX. I’m not gonna get anything done this year.

Add the coming Synthmaster 3 Player then later full version I’d say most of us are set for….life?

Got the question (again!) the other day if one really can make music with an iPad……. duuuuuuh.

No, it's not reserved in your account. No financial transaction, reserve, pre-authorization or anything else occurs when you pre-order. When the product is released, you will be charged. If you don't have enough money in your account then you will be overdrawn at the worst, or the purchase will simply fail.

Pre-ordering does nothing except to set up an automatic purchase and download when the app is released.

I’m not sitting on the fence with the J8, I preordered it days ago after listening to your demo at the beginning of this thread and I can tell you these last few days have really dragged waiting for it, I can’t wait to get my hands on it.
I think it’s absolutely amazing how you create these apps just using code. I have the vst CS80 and Pro 5 on desktop, to have them on iPad too is unbelievable, and as @Slam_Cut wrote above….we are not going to get anything done this year with all these goodies about to take over our lives 😂

Ok! I tought that since I work with Apple Cards and not my credit card. They already have the money so they could reserve it. I will have to be disciplined.

  • @analog_matt Pre-ordered. Any chance of making this and any of your other synths Mac compatible? I’d gladly pay for that. (Sorry if you’ve answered this previously.)

"JEEBUS, it's all the hardest parts!" haha

Thx for the podcast, I enjoyed it !

  • I’m really looking forward to this Jupiter 8 synth!

And I’m excited about the Prophet synth emulation.

But a CS-80? Now I’m really super excited! I can’t wait to see (and hear) this!

@AnalogMatthew I don’t know what kind of voodoo coding you’re doing to get these types of synth sounds out of an iPad, but keep it up sir! (And take my money!)
