Really great demo of the app!

I’m really interested to see what the CS80 will look like on my 13” iPad, the Desktop version was a monster and filled the entire screen:

Haha, great question! As you obviously know, most of the stuff on that Arturia screenshot isn't in the real synth. Their CS-80 VST has been out for 23 years now (!) So, I guess they've really grown it a bunch of different directions

Will prob go the SoftTube route and let you choose layers

They focus on the real synth and great tone. Which is my goal...

I think it’s absolutely amazing how you create these apps just using code. I have the vst CS80 and Pro 5 on desktop, to have them on iPad too is unbelievable, and as @Slam_Cut wrote above….we are not going to get anything done this year with all these goodies about to take over our lives 😂
    Mike

Mike, really appreciate your kind words. Well, this will be 11 years now of releasing synth apps. So, hopefully I'm getting better. But, there's still some improvement left 🙏

  • @AnalogMatthew So lush. Love those bell sounds.

Ah, yes, you are right, the vst version does have many add-ons and I have just seen a used model on eBay for just over £13,000 + delivery 😱 but going by your superior experience of making awesome synth apps, this will also be a fantastic addition to the AudioKit collection, one thing to note though …..we haven’t all got deep pockets 🤣 I somehow have to justify the importance of these apps over new kitchen appliances for my wife 🫣😂

You are welcome, and for someone who can create great sounding apps like this….they are all superb already 👌

  • Premiere just starting, 20 minute long review and walkthrough:

  • It's not out in the US just yet. I hope soon. I'd love to sample this beast into Koala as part of a piece of Ambient.

Perhaps it releases at midnight in everyone's respective timezone?
I figured it released worldwide for everyone at midnight EST.

    Where ya at @alesis?

  • First time ever preordering. Silly

It looks like I can make the app available to everyone at Midnight UK time, 7pm EST!

There's a known issue with the LFO 1 > VCO & VCA waveshape. That will be fixed in quick update as soon as Apple approves

(Running NI's code in Logic for iPad)

For those asking about the upcoming app inspired by the Prophet-5

I’ve been messing with the Native Instruments Pro 53 source code since they open sourced it a couple years ago. Great synth, no question. But building Super J8 taught me a ton about making digital feel properly analog, and I kept thinking yeah, I can make this sound a little more alive.

Same sound everyone loves, but with that fat, expressive hardware vibe like the Super J8. And this upcoming Pro-5 has a filter inspired by the NI Prophet too, so it still has that classic retro VST nostalgia. 🤌

ETA is probably a couple months.

Plus, the entire original Prophet controls can fit on a single screen

And for anyone asking about the CS-80 one, that’s getting full MPE. If all goes well, I’m hoping to circle back and add MPE to Super J8 & this Prophet inspired app later this year after the CS-80 is out. If you buy Super J8 now, you’ll still get the MPE upgrade free even if the app is $29.99 by then.

    I’m so stoked for this.

Any chance of adding an hp filter like the Prophet 6?

Good luck with the J8 launch tonight

Thank you @Gavinski for your tour of the new J8, you have just made me more eager to get my hands on it lol.
You mentioned you don’t like the tab layout for the different sections, I think many of us are accustomed to the AudioKit panel arrangement, there are also quite a few other apps that have this type of layout to save onscreen clutter, I quite like the way it is, but that’s just my own personal view.
You were manipulating many of the controls and that has made me want to explore all their possibilities, this is more than just a “select a preset and play it” synth and that stops it from ever being boring.
I have a (now not working) Sequential Circuits Sixtrak that has Oscillator Cross Modulation and the awesome sounds I could get out of it was limitless, this is definitely one aspect I can’t wait to explore.
I have researched a few Jupiter 8 write ups and apparently the Filter is designed for none self oscillation and to achieve this, a trimmer inside the original instrument can be tweaked to get oscillation, but to be honest I dont use that effect myself.
    I enjoy your video 👍
    Mike

  • I'm still searching for a solution for the tabs thing. I know it annoys at least 50% of people 😅

Does the filter sound like an IR3109?

That would be interesting to find out if the Super J8 filter is modelled on the Roland IR3109 chip, here are other products using this same chip:

Funny thing is that even though it’s the same chip family, a real Jupiter 8 filter doesn’t really behave like the Juno filters at all. It’s hard to explain unless you’ve had time on a real one, so I definitely don’t expect anyone to just take my word for it.

But if you listen around to a bunch of the higher end Jupiter 8 style emulations, a lot of the filters end up landing in a pretty similar zone. To my ears, the one that really stands out is the System 8, which a lot of people consider the closest Jupiter 8 style thing out there. And while I’m not claiming Super J8 is “the most accurate” or anything, I do think it gets closer to that low end System-8 behavior than most of the other options I’ve tried.

Had an official Roland Cloud Pack Maker hit me up during beta and tell me he was impressed with the filter, which honestly meant a lot. The low end growl is what I've been obsessing over, because that's where I feel like most emulations fall a little short.

Still planning to keep improving the filters and adding more options down the road. But if you're curious and on the fence, I think the Super J8 might be the best analog emulation on the market at the $8 price point :D

TAL J-8 has calibration settings that add things to the original synths. You can increase the self-oscillation to make it sound more like the Juno filter, complete with the bubbling and bell-like harmonics

  • Good timing for the drop tomorrow, Howard Jones playing with the HW.

The tabs are necessary for usage on the iPhone. Maybe not so much on a 13" iPad, but I'm not going to complain. I think it helps keep the UI clean. Just my two cents.

  • I'm willing to become annoyed if you need to get those numbers up @AnalogMatthew. 👍🏼

Cherry Audio's Jupiter is easily one of the best! Along with the System-8.
