Select the trig(s) you want your step fx on and once selected you’ll see the step fx icon (photo)
Menu > Extensions. They should all be listed. The entries will show the list price. When I clicked on the price the button changed to "Loading" for a few seconds, then came up with the App Store purchase dialog at the discounted price.
Currently trying to talk myself out of step-FX, LFO, and Multi-Seq. I will fail soon.
Do it!!
Prism seems very interesting. I mainly use Drambo for sequencing, if anyone is familiar with both I would be curious to hear your thoughts on how they compare and what advantages Prism may hold.
Prism makes it easy to create midi sequences that relate to the state of one another and play off each other, Drambo I find has a lot more setup involved in such a project or when you get it set up it feels a bit squished, having multiple sequences on one track and the like.
Mind elaborating a bit more? I’m also curious bout what makes Prism unique in the seq space. Like sharing scales? Time sigs? The notes themselves?
It's a tough question to answer. There is a lot of overlap - but vastly different approaches.
These are my opinion only.
+ Track interactions. You can easily do things like take the lowest (or any, or even random) notes from a chord track and make a bass line from them by just adding steps where you want the notes to sound. As the chords change the bass line follows. Or, send a number of notes to the arpeggiator.
+ The arpeggiator is terrific. Amazingly flexible.
+/- Scale/key changes are across the whole project, instantly transposing everything and keeping in scale. This can be good or bad depending on what you're doing.
- I really miss a proper piano roll and option for keyboard instead of pads for note entry
+ Even more adaptable to window size changes than Drambo, which is no slouch. It's truly usable even on a smaller phone.
- Terrible lack of contrast and tiny icons are super frustrating visually until (after weeks and weeks) you finally get to know where everything is. I think this is being refined though.
+/- Everything does make sense in the interface, but it doesn't seem that way at first. It's one of the least discoverable systems I've used. Lots of referring to the manual is needed. After lots of time with it though, it flows like butter.
+ Slightly lighter on CPU than Drambo
+ Fewer distractions since it only does sequencing.
+ (IMO) straightforward midi routing. Track = channel. No muss, no fuss.
- P-lock based CC automation only (excluding LFO IAP). No CC recording, no automation curves, etc. That's a big one, but I'm generally lazy about CC automation. If that's important then Prism isn't a good choice.
+ Nice system for making CC profiles and drum maps. (big improvement over Drambo for that). However, there is currently a bug with saving CC profiles.
+ The Step FX IAP is super deep. It does things you'd have to go to drastic lengths to get in Drambo.
\? I think I will use the Multi-Seq IAP a lot. Because each track is a fixed midi channel, doing things like sequencing the left hand vs. right hand of a piano part aren't ideal. This will help with that, and add a lot of flexibility, I think.
Those are off the top of my head.
tbh, I don't really get why I find myself reaching for Prism over Drambo for sequencing. I hated Prism at first. Now it's all I'm in the mood to use most days (for purely sequencing).
Note: I'm definitely not the typical Drambo user. I plunk in drum parts and melodies to be used with plugins in Loopy Pro. I just wanna get ideas down and minimize distractions and the temptation to tweak things to death. In some ways, just jamming midi into Loopy clips is best for my flow, but sometimes that's too limited. What draws me to Prism is how quickly I can extend a couple of patterns to get a lot more mileage out of them. Drambo is like that too, but Prism moreso IMO.
Bottom line for me is Prism feels more like a compositional aid to me than Drambo when it comes to sequencing. I don't feel like Drambo is helping me to generate ideas much when it comes to midi sequencing.
I don't HVAE the topmost menu showing up in my Prism, in any daw I have... pre ios 26
@wim
Thank ya kindly. Sounds amazing
@justaglove @wim thanks for your input! Much appreciated. I think I will stick with what I know for now, but I’ll keep an eye on Prism’s development for sure.
If you long press the prism icon it will bring up global settings .. if that’s what you’re taking about ..
Actually, long press brings up the alternative "embedded" setting method by default, unless you change the Default Setting Style. Just a tap brings up the regular menu.
Ah .. good call .. Yeah, I changed it to make the long press bring up global settings ..
Finally got it, the menu that is. Purchases still not "going thru" -- (shrug)
I feel like I should point out that I no longer feel that "the least intuitively discoverable" system is a design fail. Rather, it's the result of packing such a dense feature set into a single screen. Once the logic of it falls into place it no longer seems like a fail. Though it could definitely use to be more "seeable" for older eyes and on devices that seem to have a lot less contrast than the developer's.
It says there’s a Launch Key mk4 mini IAAP..How about a regular Launchkey MK4 ?
Thanks for that vs Drambo explanation @Wim
I would second most of what @wim said. No disagreements, but I have my own approach and ideas about using it. I’ve used Drambo to create some simple sequences and songs, and while it is amazing and powerful, and I’ll definitely continue using it a lot, Prism leads me in certain directions that are unique to the app, and very fun. I don’t think I’ll ever compose a ballad in Prism (or Drambo for that matter), but the ability to take a melodic idea or set of chords and transform and manipulate them through time and harmonic space is very quick and flexible. I can start with the simplest set of notes, and before I know it they’re grooving and bouncing.
Also, I think I have a penchant for prying into every corner and layer of music apps, and finding new things and what they do is satisfying, and this app has layer within layer.
Anyone know the source of the IAP sale info? Nothing has been showing here in UK.
So 7 quid is the sale price? Anyone know what the non-sale IAP prices are?
They’re on sale in the UK for me. The prices were listed as US dollars but it gave me the discounted price once I tapped the purchase button
Ah yes, thank you, I found the same, was just coming back to answer myself 👍
After 24 hours, the multi seq is by far the most unique and powerful thing with it. The auto accompaniments are top notch- it's all so easy and smooth. Haven't jumped into trig StepFX yet.
One instance of Chiangmai with the additional sequences it's pretty rad. You can emulate a lot of it on other sequencers but in Prism it's all right there.
Let us know how you get on with the iaps, so we might take advantage of the sale again, lol
When I bought the IAPS, they were shown as $6.99 (US) in the app, but when I went to buy them the App Store purchase dialog had them at $4.99.
They go deep. I'm really impressed.
The only thing I've run into that doesn't work as expected is they don't seem to work on a track with "melt". I don't know if it's a bug, a limitation, or user error. I've tried swiping notes another track, which works fine, but if I apply a step FX for ratcheting on the step it doesn't do anything. I hope it's a bug because that would be very excellent to have.
Another epic prism update hit yesterday. I couldn't copy and paste all the goodness, but yall can trust me. (Kek)
The iap's are still on sale @4.99.
The LFO IAP is pretty cool
Great update.. I’ve already lost track of all the fantastic new features.. picked up all of the IAPs including the newest Multi-layer Drum Euclidean FX.. Would love to see a video on that one.. I know, patience.. So much to learn but also so much fun to be had..
