i would wait until iOS 8.3 before posting any serious audio impressions or fair comparisons ;-)

Wow, congrats! Looking forward to a 'first audio impressions' review.

Thanks - hopefully it'll be a good one! I think I've got to the stage where the iPad 2 just isn't keeping up with what I want to do, so any increase in performance will be a bonus. Plus it means Monzo Jnr gets the old one and can start mucking about with synths...

  • If you are upgrading from ipad 2'you won't get too annoyed from the scrollview bug (besides gadget maybe),even with this bug it has plenty of power to offer. And 3 times more Ram :)

ok bullet bitten - one 64gb iPad Air 2 ordered from the Apple store...I can get off that fence now :)

Well done Mister Monzo. Sorry if I was over-bugging the buy-it-now pudding. Didn't mean to be an arse, but do believe that the best iPad is the one you've got and you're getting a good un. :) Buy the wife some flowers.

To be honest Gadget doesn't work that well on the iPad 2 so I won't miss it!

I bought her a car yesterday, so she can buy me some!

I appreciate the nagging, and apologise for the dithering. Looking forward to getting into the apps the ipad2 can't handle!

  • I bit the bullet as well @monzo. Got a brand-new iPad Air 2 64GB for $499 no tax and free shipping. Trading in my iPad 3 64GB with Gazelle for $110 because I don't want to deal with trying to sell it. So I went from spending $750 a little over three years ago for the iPad 3 to $390 (when you factor in the trade-in value for the iPad 3) for an Air 2 with the same storage capacity. That made the decision much easier. The limitations and frequent freezes of the iPad 3 were really starting to annoy me as well. It should arrive next week.

So I'm glad to finally join the party. (high fives @monzo!)

Had to pay full UK Apple whack(£475) for mine, and the old one goes to Monzo Jnr but it's arriving tomorrow apparently so high fives all round!

  • Had this for about half an hour now. Music apps running much better generally - no crackles in Soundscraper and iMS20, and can use all the Turnado effects. Audiobus is a bit hit and miss though - have had several freezes and disappearing sound issues when trying to run two inputs at once. Impressed so far though...

I'd say, that on the whole I'm blown away by it. The performance and screen are stunning and apart from a crashy Animoog music apps are great. The only thing spoiling my love-in is Audiobus compatibility. Things work, then they don't, in a seemingly random fashion.

@monzo Well, that's good. As you know folks with every kind of version have issues with apps on an ongoing basis, of course. Always will. But do hold onto the appreciation of what's different/better. Or maybe I'm just talking to myself. When I upped from a 'One' to an Air I was in a whirligig of happy difference for a while but found myself too quickly gnashing at this and that, while taking the speed for granted. Bit like Mrs. Goodyear's soupy little coupe. I sneered at it until I sat in it, loved it for the 0-60-ness of it for another week and then just got back to complaining about the cupholder. Yeah, it's just me.

Still, enjoy your first weekend with it zooming around....must have a fair few apps that I've heard you 'putting off until I get my new machine' to play with :)

Thanks! I am loving it - it's amazing being able to run apps like Soundscaper again. I'm going to investigate IAA as AB seems kerplunked in iOS 8.

When I've had a good go on it I'll put up a thread with a list of what works and what doesn't, for other on-the-fencers.

I won't get my Air 2 until next week but after last night's failed experiment I feel even better about the purchase. There was a video posted recently on Dischord titled "Laplace & Arpeggionome Pro Jam". I tried doing the same thing but added Crystalline as an effect and it basically killed my iPad 3. It's sputtered, crackled, and then sort of just stopped heh.

I run into problems like this more frequently now so it wasn't really that much of a shock but it did serve as a reminder that it's time to upgrade.

You'll love the extra juice in the Air 2 - staggering compared to my old iPad 2. The Audiobus issues are a pain, but the extra RAM and CPU mean I'll be able to use IAA now. Really happy with the Air 2 - could be my imagination but it even sounds better to me.

  • I done the dealio too, waited a week & a 128gb air2 landed on me this forenoon. So far my ears are grinning. I've pushed sparkle into cubasis with flux running 4 fx as iaa, chucked some loops in, cubasis fx & topped it with some iaa gadget & it's all still standing. This is the sort of action I Could only dream of on the trusty iPad2 - without the need for a lot of mix downs & bounces. Happy audionaut :)

Flux is on my list now!

  • Erm....maybe I'm not pushing it hard enough but Gadget's working like a dream. 12 tracks no sweat, through Turnado and into GarageBand via IAA and not a hair out of place.

  • @monzo Refreshing aint it? Really nothing too much to inhibit the flow. Of course some of us have a sludgy flow to begin with but that's more of an internal matter for which there appears little possibility of an update....looking forward to hearing what you come up with as a result of all this unfettered access....

Thanks, I think it'll change the way I work on the iPad. With the new extra juice I'll start putting more structured things together in apps like Gadget first. Recording the results into GarageBand and then building on that with other apps. I'm thinking of getting Flux later, and maybe Auria this weekend....

  • Fluxx ++ (again, always).

Have you got Turnado or DFX? Just wondering what extra it'll bring to my already FX laden table...

  • @monzo said:

I think of Turnado (even though it's fiddly to use) as a big boy tool. DFX is nice enough (I have a weakness for FX) and can certainly do things, but I haven't opened it since I got FLUX going. It should also be said that I use Turnado inside Auria. And, yeah, if we're talking the effecting of things: Fabfilters.

  • I like DFX, but it's a bit rough sounding. Turnado is usually my go-to app but as the pads are shared between two effects each, I think you get less control than a whole dedicated thing. Flux looks a lot cleaner and flexible. I'll be drunk shortly so it's likely to be downloaded before the end of the evening...

  • You'll still respect yourself in the morning. Mostly. And you'll love FLUX.

  • So far I'm pretty impressed with my Air 2(64GB Wifi+Cellular). Comparing to my 1st gen iPad Mini it's night and day difference, finally i can run the little bit more demanding synth without hiccups :)

Still waiting for the final iOS8.3 release...

  • Just to add to the Flux fan club. I really wish they could add this into Auria in the same way as Turnado and Fabfilters. As effects go it is really beautiful sounding.

Most likely you are not pushing it hard enough, yes ;) The gadget test i created starts glitching with 8 tracks but all tracks running the same notes at the same time and they have some release,so they are overlapping (=32 voices). And i used the Phoenix synth with Unison and delay on,all this is definitely sucking more juice than just playing some samples from Bilbao.Last but not least:Gadget only starts to glitch if you go into the key editor while the song is running. You can try that for a real test :) So,i just want to say there are a lot of variables but if you want to be sure about it (it will be the same,no doubt for me),you can do the gadget test on your own:
