What version of ios are you running? found a few things to be slightly less glitchy when I updated to 8.2, had a mare of a day the other week with turnado, funnily enough some apps I used especially on my 3 would be really glitchy when playing back, but record the audio fine, like harmonywiz, although when I have a chain in ab, all the crackles and glitches get recorded into audioshare.
Is looking like a lot of problems with the glitching will be gone with 8.3, is a gap in the app market for a quality pop and crackle remover plugin outside of eq'ing, something like izotope rx4.
@JGY
I've heard rumours of the end of april for 8.3, although I take stuff I heard with a pinch of salt especially regarding apple and rumoured release dates.
I'm still on 8.1 - I was holding off on the update as things seemed to be working better than others were reporting, but I might as well give it a try after yesterday's problems.
What's most annoying is the unpredictability of the performance - sometimes a big Audiobus chain will work perfectly, other times it can't cope with one app.
It generally runs like lightning though - I tried FLUX on the iPad 2 and it barely worked at all.
Opened up Thumbjam this morning, put it through Audiobus and it worked perfectly - no glitches at all. Used an external speaker and put it through DFX - all lovely. Perfect. Loaded up FLUX and everything fell to pieces.
My iPad Air 2 64 MB (upgraded from an iPad 3) was finally delivered and I thought I would just give a brief update after messing around for a few hours. I'm running the latest version of iOS.
That test I mentioned earlier in this thread – with Laplace & Arpeggionome Pro - now works without a hitch. Throwing Elastic Drums into the mix caused some glitches though but some or all of that could've been because of the flaky Midi clock syncing between all those apps, using Arpeggionome Pro as the source.
Before I just couldn't get AltiSpace Reverb to work properly with most apps without there being noticeable crackling. This was especially true with GuitarCapo and Guitarism. This is not a problem anymore.
I just purchased Genome 2.0 and I was able to run five different synths through it simultaneously without a hitch. I will add a few more tracks and link them to some other synths to see how far I can push it.
I'm having problems with Animoog as well. It doesn't seem very stable whether I use Audiobus or not.
I don't have Gadget (yet) or else I would test that as well.
So these are just my very initial impressions. There's a lot to process here with this new iPad so I'm sure it's going to take me a little while before I can offer a complete opinion on the subject.
I will say that overall I like what I'm seeing with this iPad Air 2. It's quite a bit quicker than my iPad 3 and the extra RAM is evident in certain places. And to my ears it sounds a bit louder and better, both from its speakers and from my headphones. That's a pretty subjective thing though I realize.
In any case like everybody else I'm really looking forward to iOS 8.3.
@monzo
Glad it's running smoother for you today, can be a mare when the creative juices are bubbling away but computer says no, one thing I wish apple would reconsider is releasing major os updates every year, just as things start running sweet, another update lands and some software will need that version, but it usually takes a while for all the bugs to be ironed out, ios 7 was a but flakey for me until the 7.1.2 update, which was solid. Maybe if they continue to go full steam ahead, they should offer a way to downgrade to a more stable version when the newness lands, for people who rely on ios and are more tech savvy.
Thanks, it's been completely sh*t all afternoon though, and I also noticed this: http://forum.audiob.us/discussion/8203/sound-disappearing-when-swapping-from-headphones-to-speaker-output#latest
I can't run FLUX:FX with some of their presets - they completely break up, even though I'm only using one input, and everything else is switched off. I've spoken to the developer and they can't replicate it, so it seems I have a dud machine. To be honest though I only seem to have issues with their app, Turnado and DFX are fine, though only with headphones.
I'm very close to asking Apple for a refund - I'm still in the 14 day window so if things don't improve I'll get my money back.
It's a tough one (I suck at sending things back) but I feel as though you might need to take 'it could just be a lemon' out of the equation.
I'm still not sure. I think there's an issue with Audiobus and FLUX:FX. This is the thing, I've just spent nearly an hour recording happily (via headphones) with Borderlands, Nave and DFX into GarageBand without a glitch or crackle to be heard. All lovely again until I add in FLUX and then everything breaks up again. It'd help if there was someone out there with FLUX on an Air 2 to see if they can run it ok. If I can work out how to use IAA with it then I'll see if it's a FLUX + Air 2 + AB = crackles thing, or if I really have lemons.
I have been trying flux (with borderlands and elastic drums on the way in) seems ok, but if you give me an exact preset for flux I'll test exact
I'm up for testing too. Also I have an iPad Air 1 for checking with another device. I don't have DFX though. Share a preset and we can check.
I have posted on here a few times about my many problems with the Flux/Audiobus combination, so it is not only you Monzo, however unlike you I run a first gen. iPad Air. You may have missed it but Sebastian did address the issues from the Audiobus side of things and later said when replying on another post that he hoped Bonjour would be fixed in OS9, which did not give me any comfort. I mostly run a guitar line into my iPad, I wonder if that might add a greater load on the cpu than a synth or sequencer would.
@skoptic @FitzFitz @banjofranbanjofran thank you! I'm trying this setup: Audiobus 256 with Thumbjam (electric guitar patch), FLUX FX (256 latency) in effects slot. Output: system audio output though iPad speaker. Nothing else running on the iPad, bluetooth and wifi off. When I play Thumbjam through the Clean Glassy/Progressions preset patch I get crackles - even without activating the sequencer. Same with Ambiance/Multi-verb patch - loads of crackles. Note that I'm on an Air 2 though, and a lot of Air users don't seem to have a problem.
If I try the same test as above but use the Apple earphones, the Progressions patch works ok but Multi-verb sounds awful, and worse if I enable the sequencer. I was trying a load of presets out last night and a lot broke up. Increasing the latency helps but really shouldn't be necessary on an Air 2.
I did miss that, thanks I'll have to have a read. I think a lot of the issues I'm having are definitely Audiobus related, as there are no issues running the apps in standalone mode, apart from the well reported Gadget and Animoog bugs. FLUX also seems to have a lot of issues when running in an AB chain.
Does anyone use FLUX via IAA? Just wondering if that would improve things. I'll test it out later.
Ok, just tried to reconstruct the crackles on iPad Air1, still on ios7 (latest).
Borderlands + Nave through DFX + Flux into Garageband. All good, until I switch to the UI of Flux, it then stops the sound. Back in Borderlands, it tells me about low memory, so I take Borderlands out of the game, and everything is back to sounding well. That's all, no crackles or anything. I'll be able to try the same setup at home with the Air2, and will let you know. (I do remember getting crackles at my last gig, though, which included playing Flux..., on Air2...). Since then I just switched to Air1 for main sound generating device, without researching further about the crackles, but will do later... .
cheers, tobias
Thanks for checking! Sounds like it's not just me then - I won't send the iPad back yet!
Yep, crackles galore with this preset and others using Audiobus! But ... Using Audioshare as IAA host, this set up works really smoothly, even with the sequencer on!
Thanks @Fitz - that rules out a problem with my particular device, and also it being an Air 2 specific issue. How do you use Audioshare as an IAA host? Sorry, I'm not used to using IAA as it was pretty ropey on my old iPad.
@monzo I have an Air 2, but not FLUX:FX, so I can't test this exact setup. I am interested to know if the crackles still occur with FLUX:FX on screen? Can you try running a loop in ThumbJam, then go to FLUX:FX and check for crackles?
The reason I ask is because I've found a few combinations of apps running through Audiobus on Air 2 where a specific app seems to need to be on screen to avoid crackles. This isn't a solution, but maybe it can help developers pinpoint problems.
@Fitz Interesting to hear it works using IAA through AudioShare. I haven't really tried that approach before, but it seems like a very useful alternative if problems occur.
@Monzo, in Audioshare open record (red microphone) option, press on + next to microphone, choose Thumbjam (I chose all instruments), press on + next to the (FX) and choose Flux. No problems. Just been trying Borderlands through Flux, trying to push it a bit and again no issues.
It's much better if you record a loop and then have Flux open. But also it's better if you stay on Thumbjam and play the recorded loop. My suspicion is this is a Thumbjam issue while you're playing it. Maybe it uses graphics to show which key is pressed. Just a guess though.
Hey .. So Air 2 set to 256ms. Both times testing with thumbjam as active app and playing keyboard live.
Thumbjam > Flux Progressions > Speaker ... Minimal glitching but definitely one or two
Thumbjam > Flux Multiverb > Headphones ... More glitching than above, quite a bit.
Roll on 8.3
I had issues with both - using FLUX:FX with Thumbjam on screen, and putting an app such as Borderlands Granular through it and manipulating the FLUX:FX screen.
Thanks for testing, that matches what I'm getting.
Thanks for the help @Fitz, using IAA works perfectly for me, no issues at all with that setup with glitching, or switching the earplugs and speaker output. Looks like this is definitely a FLUX:FX and/or Audiobus related issue.
Great crowd sourcing of a sort here
It's great - and has put my mind at ease - the Air 2 stays!
Had a lot of fun last night using IAA (courtesy of @Fitz's help), and Audioshare gets yet another gold star for being the best app on my iPad. Managed to run Borderlands through FLUX, Turnado and Crystalline, and record the resulting sludge back into Audioshare. On the cusp of glitching but just pulled it off.
It's a bit strange, on my iPad 2 I couldn't use IAA as it just didn't run nicely so everything went through Audiobus. On the Air 2 I'm aving AB issues, so I'm now running IAA which works perfectly. Upside-down world.
Slightly off-topic, but a great tip regarding using Audioshare to play and record FX through IAA. I'm still having problems with AB (in general).
Finally bought a copy of Auria...so will be mucking about with that one later.
Happy mucking @monzo. Great app!
Thanks! Going to take a bit of getting used to, but I'm loving the stuff under the hood, such as automation. Going to be a lot of Turnado tweaking going on here...
And the teak! Don't forget the teak...
I got my beer on the sideboard here
