  • It is so blissfully simple that I can't get any sound out of it :) No doubt lack of user skill, but the 'gear' icon doesn't seem to work for me (Air1/8.3).

    Any Videos/Manual about?

  • It doesn't output sound by itself.Open Bs-16i or Sound Canvas first then try again.

It''s MIDI ports seem to be promiscuous so don't have any other MIDI apps open at the same time or you will get weirdness. I wish it allowed you to configure the MIDI but alas it does not

  • A nice video showing how it is used with soft synths would really be helpful . If this is a fairly simple straight forward procedure I can see it being widely used given how many request I have seen for something like this.

  • I didn't really had to do any midi adjustments at all to the app. All I did, was launch Roland Sound Canvass them open up MidiBand. Load up a Style via audioshare. Once the style is loaded which is immediately when sent via audioshare, you press play on what ever button you wish to have playing, be it Intro, Variation, or Fills, what ever and it works right away! I recommend first getting the Yamaha .STY files because these are programmed really nicely. There are a bunch of free ones. Try the Yamaha 9k or even older ones too.

Here is a link for User created Yamaha Style files:

    http://www.1manband.nl/omb/freestyles.htm

You can also purchase professional created .Style files directly from Yamaha Corp.

I have some user made ones for Korg and other ones which I can share thru Dropbox. Let me know guys.

  • Here is a GN1000 8 Beat Style that works really nice with MidiBand 3.0 and Roland Sound Canvas. Make a song and export it as a midi file to Cubasis. You're gonna have a smile!

    Hi,
Here’s a link to “!8BEA5G0.STY” in my Dropbox:

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/aw08ytc57sk285b/!8bea5g0.sty?dl=0

  • Load it up via Audioshare. It works like a charm!

  • To go to the Midi settings, stop the playback and click on the name of the Style on the very top of the screen. In the Center. Click it and it will give you a menu. There you will find the Midi settings.

@Musikman4Christ Thanks so much. I have never worked with Styles before, but very willing to have a fiddle about. I appreciate your efforts to elucidate :)

No worries... Having Styles makes creating the basics of a song go so much more smoothly. On most styles I reduce or mute most of the other virtual midi players or instruments and usually leave the Drums, Bass and my background pad. This gets me into making quick songs that I can't wait to put out of my head before they're gone.

That's why I'm so happy to see this app come to life. Imagine there are people paying over $1000 for a hardware Arranger synth and sometimes it only comes with a few styles that you will actually use. Try taking one of those arranger ay the to work. Impossible.
So now, this app opens up a whole new world of creativity at least for me.
With Korg iM1, Synthmaster, Cubasis, now there is no reason why we can't make music anywhere, anytime.

  • @Musikman4Christ
Thanks for sharing all the info and passion!

I wonder what the difference is between this app and the new midiXpress by the same developer?

  • MidiXpress was just a preview of what MidiBand 3.0 can do with limited options. But the new release of MidiBand is the one to get.

  • I've had this app for quite some time now.
Never actually got it to work with a midi keyboard (as yet). But that's not the important part for me. What I would Love to see is an on-screen keyboard. I'm not sure why we have to use a hardware keyboard only..
Minimalism is essential for me. I feel the app would get a lot more users, a lot quicker.

I'm gonna see if I can download some other styles L8a. The HonkyTonk is driving me Tonkers. Hehe. Then plug in my keyboard and see what it can diddly do.

The concept is promising though. :-)

  • Yeah, a virtual midi keyboard would be cool! Especially since you can just play the chords in realtime then record your right hand lead later as an overdub. Great idea! I hope the dev comes here some day.

ChordPolyPad works with it but you need to set CPP's midi out to be CPP because MB doesn't show up as a virtual port and turn off all Midi in in CPP. That's why I wished for more midi config in MB. It's midi ports are promiscuous and you have to work around this in other apps.

Plus you have to make sure you are playing chords lower than the split point set in MB.

@Musikman4Christ, thanks for the links to all the sty files!

Yes indeed. Haven't got my shrunken head round them yet, but intend to try :) Thanks again.

Nice one! I'll take a look at that config..

  • You're welcome guys!

Some styles need some tweaking. Especially the non Yamaha converted styles. Sometimes the backing band may not sound as intended. So for most of the time when that happens, I just mute everything except Bass, Drums and my right hand sound, which I usually put as Piano.
Depending on the size of your midi controller, you have to tell MB the split point. The right hand will play your lead instrument while the left hand will play the chords and backing pad.

I was able to go into the Style edit page and select the desired drum kit. Its a bit trial and error, but once Roland SC takes, then it doesn't reset when you replay the sequence recorded.

I recommend that you enable the option to have all drum tracks to channel 10 in the midi settings page.

Cool, I now have it controlling bs16i but I can not play leads with the chords yet. The lead plays the same note and each press of the key makes the same note dive like a whammy bar! If I turn the first tracks volume all the way down on bs16i then I can trigger the chords for patterns just fine which is pretty cool all in itself!

    COOL!!!

I have my split point set at F5. CHeck yours and see if it needs to be adjusted.

  • I honestly can't believe this app is going for a mere$1.99 US.
    Simply amazing!
Google Arranger synths and see how much they're going for. Unbelievable!

Thanks! I think I'll get it tonight

  • I have hundreds of style-files (.sty) from Band-in-a-Box on my PC; onfortunately they seem to be incompatible with Midiband. They show completely blank after importing via Dropbox (and Open in) and don't play, or Midiband crashes! Any clues?

  • The .sty files from BIAB are NOT the same as the Yamaha sty files. I wondered about this the other day and googled only to find that they are not at all the same.

I appreciate your enthusiasm, @Musikman4Christ! Thanks for getting me on the, er "band" wagon. Auto accompaniment keyboards have always been a guilty pleasure since the Casio keyboards and seeing the Lowrey Organ shops in the mall when I was a kid! I remember a few years ago seening an impressive US$25,000 organ at a store. It was a space station!

I took the one man band link, unzipped via audio share (which I didnt know unzipped files - geez Jonatan!) and was able to send the styles right to MidiBand. Looking forward to noodling with this more this weekend!

    Thanks for sharing!

Hmm, interesting. Haven't worked with these style files either, but looks like it's time to learn how to use them :)

Besides, I'd like to support the developer. Nice work, Katya

    So, it is a recorder?

So, it is like loopy except has MIDI info and is not just a small loop. It can be a whole intro?

I just want to understand this first.

Think ala Casio keyboard. It can records your song that you put together from the styles, at least...not sure if records your "right hand" melody yet.

But is mainly to play live..

To get idea of using styles... Check out this version of Hotel California on a Roland GW8 which the performer created their own custom style...

Not sure yet if MIDIBAND can do this to this extent yet, but shows the potential!

  • You know, that's interesting. Never thought of it like Loopy. But in a sense it is, except its looping midi loops. I honestly don't know the limit of how long each loop can go or the max length allowable. But last night I was thinking. This is a an awesome tool for creating midi loops and trigger them in perfect real-time for playing live or even recording your performance in real time as you switch between midi loops. Cause as I see it, the Intro, Variations, Fills, Endings, are all basically midi loops. So they are all able to be launched at a press of the corresponding screen button or pad.

So it is simply possible to record in Cubasis a midi file export it as a midi song, then import it into Midiband and chop up your Intro, Variations, fills, etc and convert it into a style all within MidiBand.

Some would say, well if you already did all that in cubasis why go thru all the trouble of creating a style?

Well, first cause it's a lot of fun. And once you create a style you can use that as a tool to come up with new songs all over again.

Gonna try some of these ideas.

I had placed a demo song In one of my posts but it was too cheesy so I removed it. Gonna try to do one with using the Korg iM1 and Roland Sound Canvas.

I was able to record both my chord changes and my right hand lead playing, both at the same time in real time. This I did using my M-Audio Mini 32 Air midi controller. It has 32 mini keys and 8 pads and it fits in a laptop bag. Its prefer for on the go.

I hope the dev allows the pads to control the screen pads to change variations, fills etc...
