Thanks! I need to digest what you said and experiment around more with simpler patterns to understand what's going on... I tried a Hotel California midi file to see if I could emulate the video I posted earlier in this thread... I had thought it worked to a certain extent but wasn't sure how it interpreted the chords and baseline from the chords I was playing.

The information you provided helps and I now need to dig down and noodle more!

  • For those of you still on the fence about getting MidiBand, here is a little clip I recorded to show how easy and fun it is to make a really quick song. This is not the style of music i play, but it was fun to find this cool style. I will up load it for those that would like to try it out on MidiBand.

Hey, check out this track on SoundCloud: Musikman4Christ MidiBAND ROCK Style w/SOUNDCanvas at USA!

I'm sharing it from the SoundCloud iOS app -- get it here, free: https://app.adjust.io/c1ofg4

Thanks! That is fun! And nicely demoed!

To tweak would we export to midi, edit in your favorite method, then export and import back into MB? Have you experimented with editing the styles?

  • I'm still yet to edit as I haven't figured out how to do it.
Just recently I got an app suggested on this thread but that only changes like the programs but in Cubasis I can fix the actual midi recordings. Problem is with Cubasis, to export to midi you have to access with iTunes I think. What would you recommend.

  • Actually you don't even need to export the Style. If you change the extension from .Sty or .Mib, and Change it to .mid, you simply load the style into Cubasis and all the midi tracks are auto set by cubasis. Problem is exporting it out of cubasis. I wish it allowed you to email the exported midi file or better yet, open in Audioshare. Then we would just remake the extension back to .mib or .sty and load it up in MidiBand.

  • I would think that a .sty has some other information than the straight midi file..> @Musikman4Christ said:

I would think the .sty file had additional information.... This link indicates there is a CASM header in the file...I'm not too sure, though, but worth an experiment or two....

  • CASM header is a bunch of standard MIDI "string fragments", compatible with the General Midi format. If you do not touch these strings when editing a .midi file in and external editor, you should be able to rename it back to .sty and have a working Yamaha style.

In other words, if you see in an external editor an element and do not know what it does, don't touch it and you should be fine.

    To Musikman4Christ:
I would prefer to see the exact bytes in a format I used (e.g. F0 F7 82 06 F7), but your screenshots do give me some info.

Your Pads seem to generate regular Note On events, same as note keys do. I already gave my reasons for not attaching Start/Stop and Section Change functionality to regular note keys. However, if pads are just like note keys, they may already be usable in MidiBand ) - try changing IN track type for Track1 to Section Change in MidiBand, and press the Pads - do you get the sections to change?

Your start/stop buttons seem to generate Control Change events, Bx 16 / Bx 17 events in the midi format, where x is a 0-based track/channel number (https://www.cs.cf.ac.uk/Dave/Multimedia/node158.html). Most likely I could change MidiBand to accept these types of events, in addition to existing F0-F7 events, as Start/Stop/Arm triggers. Right now MidiBand 3.1 is in review, with fixes to iOS 7 issues. I can proceed changing it once v3.1 is approved in the App Store.

The bad news is that I cannot test this, as my keyboard does not send Bx events in response to button presses. So I can only do it and hope it works.

  • Wow! That would be so awesome!
I will be the tester. Don't mind at all. As long as no new bugs are introduced. And if it works in background, that would be even better!

Thanks for the explanation! I would think changing a .sty to .mid via name change, then importing to some editor, would ignore this info. Then after you edit and save or export, the info would no longer be there. But i would guess this would depend on the editor. i'll give it a try to see...

  • Got FIRO to work with Midiband, please see the FIRO Fiddlewax Pro free thread. It works and hopefully the developer can update it to have the onscreen keyboard send midi note data on a separate midi channel. That would make it so cool to control Midiband chord, and section changes all from within one screen. FIRO is currently free so take advantage of the generous off by Adam the developer of FIRO. I really like it so much!

MidiBand 3.1 has just been approved and is available in the AppStore. The issues with iOS 7 sliders should be fixed now. Also, you can select Inputs and Ouputs in 3.1, to silence unwanted interactions.

  • Thank you!!! Great update!

  • @Ksh

Sliders now work smoothly on iOS7, thanks.

For all who may not know about this awesome app here's. A tip:
You can use MidiBand as a drums only Jam machine. I do it all the Time.

Get a nice rythm style you want to jam with, loaded it up into Midiband via Audioshare and when you get the style playing mute all tracks and just jam with the drummer!

What's cool is that you can trigger the fills, section variations all in real time!
    Makes it so much fun!

Great app for jamming or recording a song in real time!

  • Did anyone found any video tutorial or a manual?

  • I was going to make one but haven't had a chance. It's. Pretty straightforward app but true, a little how to video always helps.

    Interesting video.

Great to see the app in it's glory..

  • The bit about creating a style from a midifile is amazing, so easy!

  • I just had a chance to play with MB3 and was going over my depot of styles and found some really great 8beat styles. Again I was amazed how easy it is to lay down a drum track by simply muting all the additional channels in the mixer and switching between fill sections wow! So awesome to have this tool!
    Thanks for video.

  • Is there a way to have Mudiband start and stop by receiving the command from Cubasis? That would be so cool especially if you're using other instruments in Cubasis.

  • Can MidiBand take midi input from another IOS app such as SoundPrismPro? I notice that when the app opens it mentions hardwire midi or midi from OSX. It would be GREAT to control it from soundprism.

  • I have controlled with other apps like Chordion which is pretty awesome!
I'm trying to get the hang of changing sections remotely while also playing chords. So like Chordion sends chord data thru a separate midi channel and the keyboard on the right of the screen can send also via a separate midi channel. Will try it today.

  • edited November 2015

I can now positively say that Chordion works perfectly to control Chord changes and Section changes in Midiband 3. I was able to set it up where when I play the polygons in Chordion, they send chord data changes to Midiband and when I play the keyboard in Chordion, it also sends section changes to Midiband. What I haven't tried is to send melody data but my main concern was being able to switch sections live on fly while I was making my song. So that works perfectly and I really like it. I'm able to do chord changes on the same screen in Chordion while also changing sections on the same screen of Chordion. This is absolutely awesome!

My only issue is that I haven't figured out how to start or stop Midiband remotely from Chordion. I really wish the play button on Chordion was programmed somehow to send that start stop message, that would be even more incredible. For now, I am so glad to be able to control Midiband without having to use my external midi controller and do it all through Chordion on the iPad screen.

I took some screenshots of my setup and hope it helps some one. I also hope the developer of Chordion chimes in and perhaps could some day do an update to have that start stop button on Chordion send out midi or what ever it needs to send to Midiband to start and stop it. I also hope Kateryna can program Midiband to receive what ever command Chordion would send to start and stop. So far, I can't get any app to communicate start stop commands to Midiband.

I really wanna do a video of how all this works! but I dont know how. I'll ask my son who is more savvy on this stuff but it is amazing!

Forgot to mention that in Chordion, in the screen shot where you can select the keyboard range, I selected the lowest setting. In order to be able to do the section changes. I also lowered channel 2 to the lowest volume setting in Midiband's mixer so that you dont hear those low notes playing when changing sections.

I'm also using Roland Sound Canvas for the sound module. I plan to use Cubasis, and will create a template now that i learned how to do that, but Roland sound canvas is super fast, sounds great and it sets itself up faster.

  • What I've ALWAYS wanted to do is controll an arranger with my guitar. But, I don't have a midei guitar and haven't wanted to make the investment yet.

Now I've discovered the Midi Guitar app found on the app store.

Has anyone tried controlling Midiband with the Midi guitar app?

  • I havent tried Guitarism which sends out midi chord as well, will check. I don't have midi guitar.
