  • I haven't been around here for a few months but I have a few works in progress for you all to have a listen to.

These have all been done in Gadget but as I am fed up of waiting for Auria Pro over the last couple of months I have been figuring out how best to transfer things to Cubasis so I can start using some other apps to make some noise!! I find that Gadget has the best workflow on the iPad just because everything you need is there but I really want to start using Cyclop properly!! I normally start with basic drums then bass then whatever I fancy from there. Occasionally that differs like with Soul of North which started as a bass line I play in my band. These tracks are likely to change quite a lot before I'm truly happy with them as I struggle to leave things alone! The main problem I find using Gadget is that I have about 30 unfinished songs saved and I constantly do a little bit on one then something on another then something else instead of concentrating on finishing one!!

Anyway enough rambling and I hope you like my tunes!

  • @Jarmin, Beat 'em was awesome.I loved the reggae kinda vibe which u went to in a big way towards the end.Nice brass! But fave bit for me was the ascending chords u used leading into the 2 min ish mark.Nice touch! Il listen to others when I get a min:)

  • @Jarmin are these WIPs or finished tracks? If they're WIPs then which one are you planning to finish as your August SOTMC entry?

  • Just made this instrumental. It is made with my new Robert Smith Ultracure guitar (very hard to get here in Europe). Not shure if I will add voice to it. I don't think I will. Two reasons: just bought my new guitar and busy with that. And adding voice is such a labour intensive tweaking thing, the amount of fun is a bit too low for me at this moment. So my motivation is rather low.

The Ultracure guitar is a great instrument!! Great tone, very in tune on every fret, comfi to play, great sustain!!!!!!

    (I have no title yet)

  • @Marcel it's a nice mellow instrumental with a good groove (how were the drums done BTW? They're very good), and I like the stops and starts. The second guitar that comes in, with the chorus effect, does sound a little Robert Smith-esque, but I probably wouldn't have picked up on that if you hadn't mentioned the guitar :)

The stops and starts are nice, the strings at the end are a great touch as well, helps to build up the track. Of course I would definitely prefer it if there was a vocal, because then there would be more incentive for repeated listnenings.

  • @richardyot - thanks for your (as ever) to the point comment on my track. The drums are from the app Rock Drum Machine 2. Indeed very good drums. The app provides a very good sound and has good variation (even the amount of variation is variable), and is easy to use.

I recorded everything in GarageBand. So also the drums. I did it very simple: I set RockDM as an inapp in GB, I set the desired settings in RockDM (for instance the right BPM), pressed record in GB , went to RockDM and pressed play, and after recording I dragged this drum track to the right spot to lay it in sync, and there is the drum track. Easy, and good.

  • @richardyot they are all WIP's but I'm gonna try and finish Beat 'em. Where is best to post other links to songs?

  • @Marcel. Very nice mate! I'm sorry that u find the vocal side of things a struggle/not as fun. Maybe taking the odd month off from vocals will help, but don't take too long off as I will miss your self confessed German accent singing voice!:D ( just kidding, none of us thought u sounded German! A little Spanish maybe!!! Haha!)
So u have a new toy eh?? Well it sounds very nice, nice tune.Top quality as always.
    Moi bien!

  • Hey @Marcel, you have there a really nice instrumental track. Congratulations; it was very pleasant to listen to. I'm fine with it being a purely instrumental track; I found the chords and the overall progression well done and it feels complete (to me) as it is. Thanks for the great playing, and congrats on your new guitar!

  • @Jarmin thanks for the clarification. It usually takes me around 15 minutes to properly critique a track, so I didn't really want to spend 45 minutes going through all 3 tracks :) There is a "Creations" sub-forum where you can post tracks, this thread is really for focused critiques and sharing ideas.

Beat 'em: interesting fusion of reggae and drum 'n' bass, I haven't quite heard anything like this before so that's cool. I found the choice of sounds/patches a little harsh, but that's possibly a matter of taste - it's clear that my tastes are more towards the "easier on the ear" end of the spectrum than many people here. The drums also could do with a bit more of a groove to my taste, but on the other hand I did really like the variety in the track and the various changes in patterns etc...

The horns were definitely my favourite part, especially towards the end, they lent some real musicality to the track. Also the rhythm of the horns really had a groove, much more so than the drums for me.

The structure I thought was good, with changes and stuff happening throughout, so there was no time to feel bored.

I'll be interested to hear where you take it next.

  • @Jarmin Beat'em. Enjoyed the Reggae beginning & the different feel when the dance music kicks in. 2 styles that, in your tune, works for me & because it's a new sound/fusion to these ears it came across as new, fresh & maybe a style for you to really exploit. I did prefer "Marine" especially that little drum change at 22 secs. Said its not finished yet so have you any plans for some vocals? Good stuff :)

@LostBoy85 - about Moraira Sky - Lovely song! Well done! Someone said it doesn't have a hook, but I don't agree: there is a particular - sort of jazzy - chord change that I like very much.

The beginning of the song I vaguely associate with that Paul Weller band (after The Jam), wtf was the name...google..wiki.. yes, found it: The Style Council. Not that it is the same, but it has a comparible sort of jazzy smooth positive clarity.

Another good production! There are a lot of things going on. As in your other songs. And it all fits. Nice little piano phrase. Also that little - what is it - mandolin (?) is very nice. As I listen to it for the third time, there are other chord changes I also like. This must have been a lot of work.

  • @Marcel Looks & sounds like a great new guitar you have (I'm no guitarist) & as per your other songs, you play really well. I can hear the Cure tone that works with your instrumental tune & I missed your vocals this time around. I do share your "time, work heavy" view on recording vocals but I hope that you do manage to on this track when you have some time in the future.

I like the drums, there's some tidy fills in there. Did you play them live (tap or programme)? I'm a pad tapper as it feels slightly more organic but it's tricky to get those intricate little fast fills in. Good work Marcel. :)

  • @Marcel,Thanks man I appreciate it.The mandolin sound is actually supposed to be a Spanish guitar from Bsi bismark! Actually in truth, that's my least favourite bit.If your going to have Spanish Guitar in your song then there's no equal to someone actually playing it:)

On another note,I've just rediscovered Rock Drum machine 2!! My god that apps amazing! I know you used it in your song Marcel which made me go back to it.Its made me want to re do all the drums on my current song as the fills are all bloody amazing!! I made a 20 bar song in song mode & recorded that song into auria 10 times and every time was a completely different track regarding fills.Brilliant! I would def recommend it to @Richardyot over sessionband drums imo.

@LostBoy85 Yes, I've been using SessionBand Jazz for the the drums on this month's entry, it's actually pretty easy to create variations on a fixed loop by using Abu Dhabi in Gadget: you import the whole loop into the init patch and it's automatically diced into 16 bits (as long as the tempo matches). At this point it's trivial to change things around in the loop.

Up until now I've always created my drum loops myself, either by programming or tapping out rhythms. This is the first time I've ever used a canned loop. I was reluctant to do it before, but it's obviously much easier to get a good groove by doing this.

I'll check out Rock Drum Machine at some point, it does look quite versatile. What I like about the SessionBand loops is that there are a lot of more funky and syncopated rhythms.

  • Aha...good to know about the gadget trick thanks:) and you know me I'm a big fan of the sessionband apps and use them a lot but if u want to change the tempo sometimes the quality suffers quite a bit but I noticed zero quality loss on RDM.Def try it out mate!

  • RDM is MIDI based so there's no time stretching when you change the tempo. I wonder if there are any other apps out there in similar vein?

@Bluepunk I used Rock Drum Machine 2 and I made some remarks about how I used it in my last comment on august 10. Thx for listening btw :) and thx for your kind words about my track :)

@Richardyot Drum Loops HD. I love the sound of this app. It is the best in my opinion (regarding quality of sound). But: no variation. You can make some variation manually though. About changing tempo: One can copy a loop and put it in GarageBand and then the tempo is adjusted to the tempo in GarageBand. It still sounds good then (in my ears). Don't know if it is Midi based. There used to be a free lite version for trying it out.

  • Drum Beats + has few fills etc but plenty of (varied) standard beats and all can be very easily slid from 60 to 190.

  • Lost Boy 85 ,listened to "Moriair Sky ",your song is fine! You could tweak it till The cows come home but IMHO leave it as is.

  • @Marcel Great work. The guitar tones are great, I really love the layers of guitar, bass, strings at the end. I also now want to buy RDM2

  • @BvsMV Thanks!! :) Yeh, that last bit turned out to be very nice. That last particular string part was the last thing I added. It is from Sample Tank, played with iRig keys. The bass I tapped in GarageBand. It is not a fabric arpeggio, it is manually tapped. You really can get a decent bass out of GB. In this song I partly used a fabric bass GB arp, and partly tapped it.

  • A little gadget doodle

  • @AlterEgo_UK, nice bed of music to add an electric guitar solo over. It could be a call and response to the piano part.

  • @AlterEgo_UK said:

Nice beat on this one. I like the syncopated synth chords going along with the beat. I agree with @bsantoro that a guitar over the top of that would be great.

  • I like it, piano sounds a little mechanical and I would love to fiddle about a bit with the Gadget choices, but that's mostly because I know there are lots of choices to make :) In the same we we know you can play the guitar, so you've created a rod for your own back :)

  • Cheers, guys! :)
OK will see if I get a chance to add some guitar later. Was really just noodling around in Gadget for this without any external fx or mastering but will export it into Cubasis and see how it develops! :)

  • @Alterego_UK

Nice one mate! Completely different to last month.I like the piano as it is but I'm interested to hear what happens if u do what the others suggested.I did not see that chord change coming at 1.20 very nice! I must try and get my head around Gadget at some point & beathawk.I use them both for bits and bobs but I don't noodle the whole caboodle like your good self!:D

  • 1:24 cries out for some serious jazz rock soloing methinks :) Pretty interesting otherwise.

  • @Jarmin I like the reggae opening and '80s synth hook in Beat 'em. The riff between the first break and the hi-hats was a bit monotonous, but then the driving hi-hat part brings back velocity and (as mentioned above) the horns are a nice find.

Maybe you could experiment with physically reversing certain parts after the break to bring variety into that riff?
