  • @Marcel Wow, that's one atmospheric song :-) It had everything for me, i.e., intriguing melody, steady drums, rhythmic surprises along the way, ... Only the fade-out at the end could be improved, maybe let the guitar stop and violins ring out?

Regarding the vocal-debate, the song is quite strong on its own. Maybe you could try putting it on one of those song collaboration web sites to see what other vocalists could come up with.

Ok,so here goes...This is my August song 'Phantom Love'.Now although I'm a huge Ghostbusters fan, this song is about something else I'm afraid:D
If I'm honest then this song has taken me 3 months to finish! This is the one that I had to re record a lot of the vocals.I took my voice on tour this time...yes the car as usual, but also behind the bedroom door with duvets everywhere!! & finally under a sheet in Spain...u know..as u do!:D Musically I left sessionband & launchpad on the shelf & built from ground up with 1000 other apps! Synthmaster,beathawk,drumjam,RDM2,Gadget,Auria,vocalive,isymphonic,IM1 etc etc
The song itself is a biggie for me.Its very personal and has been good therapy writing it.@Supadom helpfully reminded me about 'Dynamics' on a previous track of mine & @JohnnyGoodyear hinted at being a bit more believable with the vocal.Ive hopefully addressed those things with this track however what it maybe lacks with 'hooks' & 'catchiness' I hope I've made up for with emotion & atmosphere. Its a little longer than normal but I don't really mind as I believe some songs need to take longer than others.
Anyway any thoughts are welcome:D cheers as always guys!

  • Here's my submission for this month (1st song in 6 months, time flies). It's a departure from my usual melody-heavy style, as I was inspired by a documentary I recently watched about the birth of breakbeat. So, the song is very rhythm-oriented (DrumPerfect meets BeatMaker 2), and prominently features iFretless Bass (through AudioBus). Comments welcome!

Wow. You did done brung it. This is a three-box-of-hankies epic.

There feels/seems like a lot going on and much of it reminds me of 1986. That's not a negative, just a cultural observation. It IS quite long and I would imagine this to be the 'album version'. Maybe on the soundtrack of Top Gun.

You have such a good voice and this kind of power ballad suits it, but then I think you could turn those pipes to quite a few things, duvet covers or otherwise :)

I did get a bit confused as to where I was in it some times, but I think that's also the result of only listening to it the once. So....I have to make a run up the peninsular to pick up some money, it's a warm night, I am going to try and forget my own biases viz decade etc, will open the windows down wide, keep the Atlantic ocean on my right and blast this through the car speakers which seems the most appropriate choice in light of your own studio techniques (which I admire).

Interested to see what a few more listenings does for it/me. It's certainly a big and heartfelt piece and well done for doing the work. That's what it takes, for all of us, in the end.

  • @LostBoy85 my kids love using the word "epic", I think that's the only adjective to describe this one. It does have that 80s power ballad sound, but you've got the voice for it, so why not.

Structure is pretty operatic, with movements rather than VCVC and I can see why it took so long, the vocals have been crafted phrase by phrase, a huge amount of work has gone into them. The music and production are also extremely well crafted, you've really grown as a songwriter and producer these last few months.

  • @Alter_Ego_UK interesting to hear your take on Gadget, and as usual it's very musical and melodic. The chord change in the middle verges on the dissonant to my ears, but not in a bad way, more of a surprise as LostBoy85 says, it gave the track a lift.

It would be nice if more was going on though, so I will add my voice to the calls for a guitar part.

  • @badmaxton I like the bass riffs, and the drums that play with the first riff, however the drum part on the second riff loses the groove for me. I also like the more choppy variation on the riffs that comes in towards the end, it would have been good to hear more of that.

Also it would have been nice if another instrument or sound was introduced later in the track for variety and interest. But the riffs are catchy, there is a good basis for a tune there.

  • @JohnnyGoodyear thanks for always being so great with your creative, witty & thoughtful posts! One of these days il mash them all up and try and write a song! That would be good fun! :D Hmm...what was happening in '86 then?? Yeah I know u struggle with the long ones mate (that's what she said!;) but thanks for sticking with it.I find it so hard to keep a ballad around 4 mins! And I really needed to get all of this one out of my system so to speak.

@Richardyot thanks very much mate! I'm trying,il give myself that, but my god I want to still tweak it even now! Still too much sibilance in first verse (heaven knows I did shit loads to it already) whole mix seems a tiny bit too loud,is my vocal too loud/quiet,what the hell was I thinking putting one of those fricking Kung fu dragon gong things in the instrumental break!:D I did have so many different parts that didn't get used.I must admit that after some remarks about space and breathing on a previous track I took out some vocals but I'm the first to admit that there's not a tonne of space in this one either....all that being said...I'm happy enough to let this one go...always learning...& on to the next one!:)

  • @badmaxton very catchy little tune u have there mate! Reminded me of playing on my old sega master system. The bass line is great! I enjoyed the change ups as well but forgive me if I'm wrong but it sounded slightly out of time around 0.25 & 1 min.just a smidge:) otherwise really cool sounding track!

  • @richardyot and @LostBoy85 thanks for the comments, I'll do my best to incorporate them!

    @LostBoy85 - about Phantom Love

Your singing gets better and better! Also more personal coloring/emotion in your voice, which is great. It is a great song! What a production!! This is a very rich production!!!! With depth in it. Top quality! We tend to focus on the voice, but the instrumentation is also supurb on this track!! Like it a lot! (it = the instrumentation and the song as a whole). Great atmosphere, def not too long.

After a few listenings I think I know what it is about. Makes it even better. Great you wrote this song!

Some thoughts/ideas: perhaps you can experiment with vague/delaying backing vocals. Or did you just do that in this song? It has so much in it, I just can't hear it all even after a few listenings. And perhaps experiment with some slightly more delay here and there in the main voice. Totally NOT as critisism of this song, but only as ideas apart from this song. To enhance the depth you already bring in your songs. Just thoughts - brainwaves from me - perhaps you don't like these ideas, no problem.

Another thing, a detail, you said something about it yourself: the spacing of the voice could be a tiny bit more in next productions. But I haven't worked this idea out in detail. So I don't know where that more space is best placed. Perhaps between lines here and there. But I am definitely not shure what is best.

I can't stop thinking/talking about myself - don't we all - I did everything (on what I posted earlier this month) in 4 or 4,5 hours, perhaps even less. So I am better....:).....no I'm completely not, just kidding.

  • Hahaha! @Marcel,you're a funny bugger!:D Thanks very much for your take on my song! Very generous of you & im glad you liked it so much.I forget there's a language barrier so the title 'Phantom Love' may seem a bit strange. In case you weren't so sure Its just a play on the whole 'Phantom limb' thing that amputees often get but with emotion instead...a bit weird I know...but hey!
That's amazing that you did your track in 4.5 hours!!! I wish it came that easy to me.it takes me longer than that to choose what bloody synth I'm gonna use!:D I must admit I can come up with a melody pretty quick but then everything else takes sssooooooooo long!
As for delays, thanks for the tip but I actually flirted with the idea & decided not to in the end as I felt a more raw vocal might better suit the story.I did however use a smidge of convolution reverb this time which is new to me.
Thanks man.And I'm working on our little project as we speak...:D

Hey @LostBoy85 that's great (about you working on our little project). I can't wait, but take your time of course. About the Phantom title: I figured that one out by myself, we here in The Netherlands use the same word (if for instance you lost a leg). Therefore the title was understandable, even for me :). Great title btw.
About coming up with a melody pretty quick: that is a quality! You could consider making much easier arrangements. But I guess you already thought of that yourself.

  • @Marcel the Netherlands?? Why do I have it in my head that your Spanish?! My bad! To be fair you do look Spanish in your profile pic....however in mine I very much look like a wet dog soooo...:D

  • Hahaa! Very good Johnny!:D

  • @badmaxton; Great bass riff and like the extra little bits you added in the second half that give it a little bit of variety. :)
@LostBoy85: Love this song. The vocals are great, full of emotion. Like the music too, although I don't think the off beat hits in the chorus section work too well for me.

  • So, I listened to all the comments about my track needed a guitar part and here it is (plus some sax for good measure) :)

  • edited August 2015

@AlterEgo_UK Great job man! I really smiled at 1.26!! You play really well & obviously you have a rep for that hence the people wanting it on this track!:) I don't think they will be disappointed.

    Oh,& thanks!:)

  • Lovely @AlterEgo_UK. Well felt.

  • Here's my entry for this month.

All done in Gadget, mastered in Final Touch, edited in Twisted Wave (mostly).
Pretty oblique, as usual and would benefit from a few listenings (if you have the inclination to do so)

  • @Igneous1, Hey man, firstly to my ears it sounds very well mixed.Nothing seemed buried in the mix (others are better qualified to comment on that I'm sure but all good in my opinion:) Very nice variety of bass,I especially like the .40 bass & 1.50.I love that snare, nice and punchy! The flutey/pan pipe sound is nice to hear it reminds me of old TV shows/movies.Very er...suspencey?!? (Yep! I'm pretty sure that's a word:D )
    Nice work!

  • @Igneous1 Not entirely my box of cabbage, and thus don't trust myself to judge what you have here. I like the steady variation and development but (perversely) might like that to be more dramatic or defined to give my impatient ears something to hold onto or make a narrative out of, but -for me- that's the thing about a lack of words; again very much my own bias etc.

For all of the wishy-washyness of that comment, I admire you the more so for having something to share. Three weeks in this month and I seem to be nowhere worth talking about AT ALL so good for you :)

  • @LostBoy85,
Cheers for your comments, 'suspencey' - I like that ! and for your comments on the mix / production.

    @JohnyGoodyear,
Many cheers too, even I could tell it wasn't your thing, you praised my work ethic :)

If anyone cares to note, this one was heavily influenced by Japan's Ryuichi Sakamoto period and Jon Hassell.
Yes the structure is pretty oblique, but thats the way I work with these things. I like the more 'non-linear' approach.

  • edited August 2015

I agree 100% with @LostBoy85, @badmaxton! Great track, I totally thought I was fighting a boss in a Sega Game. Good stuff, seemed different from the rest of your stuff, keep experimenting.

Nice work. I enjoy this one a lot. I like the lack of "linear" song structure, it keeps me paying close attention for what is to come next, as opposed to the predictability of a normal pop structure.

  • edited August 2015

@Igneous1 probably a bit too oblique for me, I'm sure you expected me to say that :)

It's definitely a lot more melodic than most of the experimental pieces that get posted, and there are a lot of ideas going on, which could make it interesting, but for me personally the rhythm parts and the meandering structure make it hard to enjoy.

I listened to it four times (I always listen several times for a critique), but there wasn't really anything in it that would make me want to come back for another listen. This kind of music feels like a a bit of a cold intellectual exercise so as a listener there isn't really anything emotional there - it just doesn't make me feel anything, so it's hard to relate to.

  • My entry for the month:

  • @BvsMV
Thanks for that, in fact thats the idea behind it !

    @richardyou,
You didn't get it, but a least you gave it a good listen. It's obviously not your thing.

  • Hmm...I can't seem to listen to anything on soundcloud at the mo??
