  • Yeah, it's a shame they still haven't updated all the Logic synths to be retina compatible, especially the brand new flagship! Seems a real missed opportunity given the whole new UI.

Maybe it's because of cpu/gpu limits. I have trouble with some more complex UI (even non retina) like Serum, B2 or Kaleidoscope so that i can't open their UI while playing the sounds.

On iOS we use just one (soon maybe 2) synth at the same time. On desktop we could open several..... maybe here is the downside.

Ultrabeat looks so bad...... but it's an awesome tool. But when your head begins to hurt and you see double after some minutes it's no fun to edit those tools.

Maybe it's a bit more complicated to create retina UI's for desktops..... but at least some third party developers did a good job (U-he f.e.).

IOS is maybe not so powerful but the synths looks much more beautiful and i find that also important to have fun to use a tool.

It's like i had to go back to non HD TV..... no way man ;)

  • Guys, how does EXS24 import work? Can't find anything like it

You just have to go to one sound source and use "import audio". Then you must search for the sampler instruments. You can search and choose one and it will be imported then. So you could use 4 different multi layered and/or multi sampled exs24 instruments for one Alchemy patch. Awesome!

  • @Cinebient got it, thanks!

My mistake is that I thought it could import .exs files. Like NI Kontakt does

I tested it and it's now my new number one synth!

Very fulsome report and a beautiful patch. I think you could sell it to Disney. Sweet, but very high-end sounding.... :)

Disney.... was that not the other dark fource..... ;)
And let's not forget that some iOS synths can sound this way too.....

  • So I've got a question. If we get the 14GB of samples inside mainstage, is it possible to transfer our favorites back over to the iOS version?

In other words how hard is it to import Alchemy patches from Mac to iOS?

  • @yug said:
There's a blue 'Alchemy' button in the 'Input' row at the right side of the screen (Channel Strips area) - click it

I clicked it. And there is the full synth. Right there in MainStage for $29

wow, I don't even know where to begin. I think I'll go download the rest of the Alchemy samples before Apple realize what they've done and take back all the goodies they gave us.
Did you find this stuff @funjunkie27 ?

And let's not forget about other awesome instruments: Sculpture, Ultrabeat and a bit old but still wonderful EXS24 (27GBs of samples!)

  • Thanks...I hadn't found it yet. Going back in!

If it comes down to a choice between retinizing everything or continue making new things which may or may not use the old plugins in some component, I'll take the latter. It will be an obvious way to separate legacy plugins from the new/reimagined versions of them.

I like that they've taken a reimaginative approach to the compressors when they redid them.

And about MainStage, it even has the advantage over Logic of having some of the Redmatica Autosampler functionality, which I have to believe will come to Logic eventually, but then again, maybe not. Cool to have both.

  • Thanks yug. It is going to be a long fun exploration of MainStage.

I'll start with Alchemy but yes, there's so much more in there it is shocking.

I need this autosampler in Logic.... so maybe a (clever marketing) reason to buy Mainstage too. I would like to autosample some iOS synths as exs files which i could open then (up to 4 of these) in Alchemy for further sound design.
Anyone knows if i can open MainStage inside Logic (like an AU) so that i can work with it without leaving Logic. That would be awesome!

  • Found the Alchemy pot-o-gold! Over 3k patches, so my Labor Day weekend plans have changed. I need to take a look at the autosampler as well.

  • So, I REALLY want Alchemy, but I REALLY don't need Logic Pro. Thus, I'm considering getting MainStage then rewiring it into Ableton Live 9. I'm seeing that people have been able to get this to work, but how reliable is the link between MainStage and Live? Does rewiring cause any notable CPU hits or increase in latency? If I rewire, will that prohibit me from using any other plugins in Live as long as MainStage is running? Thanks for any help.

Mainstage is a ReWire Master only, so you'll probably run into a lot of Problems ;)

  • Kind of thought that would be the case. I'll probably just end up coughing up the money for Logic, Still cheaper than Alchemy used to be when Camel Audio was making it...

  • you can use Soundflower for routing audio from Mainstage back to Live

  • I gave up trying to record Mainstage into Logic 9. I got soundflower to work but ended up with crackles in the audio just as in previous attempts. Headaches like these are one reason I went the iOS route. iOS has it's own headaches but the solutions are always cheaper than on a laptop.

  • @Hmtx said:
Assuming you've backed all your projects up, maybe delete and reinstall?

Just to let you know: deleting and reinstalling worked, evrything is fine. Thank you.

  • I ran 6 Alchemy plugins yesterday. Take that Apple.

Logic Pro X just got all the other DAWS running really scared. Probably the best £149 one can spend. Well over 50GB of sample content. In as much as I like iOS apps, they've now been subsumed into my overall music flow. The best of both worlds. I dare say.

There's another way to do it. Once you are happy with the sound and ready to record, you can use the AutoSampler plugin to sample the instrument you are using. AutoSampler will create an .exs patch, which then you can load into Live, Cubase, etc via TX16WX (a free AU/VST sampler plugin). Also, since TX16WX can open .exs patches, you can use it to host almost any EXS24 sampled instrument (27GBs of additional content from Logic/Mainstage)

I understand this workaround might not suit everybody but maybe somebody would find it useful

  • I really love the Logic Update since it seems more stable for me too. I really love our beloved iOS tools but i must say that a synth like Sunrizer gets really new life in such a DAW with all the additional automations and midi FX plug-ins! Not sure if Auria pro will have such things... maybe NanoStudio 2 or BeatMaker 3?.... we will see ; )

My first little track made very quickly. A strange mixture of (maybe too many) elements. Lots of Sunriser here too... i damn love this "old powers" patch so much. One of my favourite patches ever from all synths ; )

Still have to handle the mastering a lot better. I used just some default settings and tweaked them a bit and added some things. But i think Logic can also be very good for mastering.... when it will be proper used. (means not like i did).

Let me know if it´s not O.K. to post it here.

  • @funjunkie Where are the patches in Main Stage? Thanks

Like this plenty. Got feel and groove. Especially the first act (first two minutes).....

  • @mgmg4871 - just click on the Alchemy button in the channel strip input slot (edit mode) and it should pop up the AU/VST.

    Nice, good sounds too.

Yes, nice track - a bit of a departure from the more cinematic pieces we are used to hearing from mr cinebient.

  • Seem that MainStage burns down my i7 quadcore.... Logic is much more usable with the same settings. MainStage is a huge CPU-hog. Good that i just bought it for the autosampler ; ) So never would this be usable on an iPad yet :(

Ah yes, i made a few other Dance/Trance EDM whatever tracks but i really feel more home when it comes to cinematic and ambient stuff. Alchemy is for sure the right tool for it. I rated now most of the patches and found a lot old and some interesting new ones. I will pick up some of them and will make a full cinematic track. This synth is the most versatile sound design tool for me today (together with Omnisphere 2). Some of my favourites from the old version seems missing. I tryed to create an alias to stream the samples from an extern SSD.... doesn´t work. I think i must use a symbolic link.... when i once figure out how i can create one ;)

But Alchemy 2 can also be very CPU-heavy. So i doubt we see an iOS version in near future.
