Really enjoying the first season of Shogun on FX, based off the book, and true historical events. The first season recently ended. I have 1 episode left. It’s on Hulu. The show does a really great job of bringing you into the world, heck it pulls you into the world. They do a great job of portraying life in Japan at that time, (700-800AD)

It’s actually the year 1600. Either way, you’re right that it has a great grasp of a historical period of Japan.

My bad, when I posted that I couldn’t remember if it was 600-1700 or 1600-1700, lol. Thanks for the clarification.

  • Yea @yellow_eyez i really enjoyed it. I’m a bit of an Anglophile, love of English/England stuff. There’s gotta be word for love of Japan stuff.

    Found it.

PS. Dune 2 is coming to HBO Max soon. No date but I think it will be within the month.

It's set to stream on Max next Tuesday, May 21.

  • Severance of course. Also Slow Horses on Apple TV+ is very enjoyable - a drama about spy dropouts, with the excellent Gary Oldman as a washed up, flatulent spy boss who isn’t as washed up as he looks.

    Shogun. SOOOOO good.

Been listening to the score on it's own and it is absolutely gorgeous.

  • Slightly (9th art?) OT but all of you that love shogun, have you seen usagi yojimbo (comic) from stan sakai? I absolutely love them, they’re historically accurate and the amount of detail is amazing. You always get something new from rereading.
I must watch shogun now, saw the 1st episode but was half asleep, but I do love the theme of edo period japan (did I get that right?)
And I’m also totally into Buddhism as a philosophy, so zen’s that

  • I’ll show myself out

  • Sorry, not a comic guy so I’ve never seen that.

It’s also not in your face during the show, as is the case with way too many movies and TV shows of late - it’s neither bombastic nor too loud - excellent balance of action, dialog, and music.

Read some Usagi Yojimbo way back in the 80s/90s. Lone Wolf and Cub is great too. It is a really fascinating period.

Holy shit. I always knew they were good, but only ever saw them from the ass back end of a crowd of 20,000.

  • I just watched godzilla versus kong. Don’t recommend it, boring as hell. Your suggestion @colorsinspace seems interesting though

It got great reviews, but I was surprised how good it was.

  • I watched Oppenheimer for the first time last night, and it’s every bit as good as I expected it to be. My only regret is not seeing and hearing it at a movie theater as I could see how a huge screen and a lot of volume would really make the experience.

  • Machos alfa. A really good story and lot of fun to watch.

  • Just finished Girls5eva. Hilarious and very well-written. Recommended.

  • Watched a couple of episodes of season 3 of Twin Peaks last night. Great continuity with the show from decades ago.

  • “Le bureau des légendes” one of the best series about spy I have seen…highly recommended

  • Watched the 1925 version of Phantom of the Opera last night. Lon Chaney’s makeup was way ahead of its time, and even more impressive that he did it himself.

  • I have really been enjoying clips of the first rubes…excuse me…early adapters of fElon’s Folly the Cybertruck. And these “test pilots” trying to do “truck things”
The numerous clips have everything: pride, naivety, arrogance, snobbery, bargaining, near death, flattery…incredible.
I still haven’t decided upon my favorite nickname for it. Incel Camino, Deplorean, and WankPanzer are in the running.

You won’t be disappointed. Except for in large swaths of humanity.

  • accompanying film to Bad Bunny’s album.

    Short film:

The frog a “concho” frog which is endangered by invasive species and loss of habitat.

I’ve seen at least one honest reaction where someone cried. She is from Hawaii, so I think it touched something.

  • @JeffChasteen - WankPanzer wins, no question. 😂

Both of these look like they would be great.
    Thanks for the heads up.
