At this rate, PM will essentially have so many controls and options it will be faster to just write the music by hand! 😂

Now it just needs a drummer!

😂, the bright side is that you don't need to use any of the controls or options and you can still generate good motifs. Just press Play/Generate and the app will do the heavy lifting for you (except the drums though, 😂).

@azul3D_Apps I've been out of the loop for a while so I'm just catching up with all the new PM stuff, including the tutorials (which are uniformly excellent!). One thing that occurred to me today as I was playing with the walking bass accomp style: it would be cool if you could set it to add chromatic notes as you can with the chromatic melody constraint. If I was being greedy, I'd also ask for some ascending/descending controls, as well. Just a thought!

Hi @lukesleepwalker, glad to hear you liked the tutorials. Currently, you will sometimes get chromatic notes in the Walking Bass Accomp Style. I will see if I can add an option where some chromatic notes are used. Also, the Walking Bass is just a typical bassline that goes up on one bar and down on the next one. Are you suggesting a bassline that just keeps going up/down or just ascends/descends on one bar and then restarts?

Yes, I do hear a chromatic note from time to time with the walking bass style, and it sounds good! But I'm so used to being able to dial up / dial down things in PM (the frequency sliders are just ace!) that I found myself wanting something that allows me to raise the "spice level" in terms of chromatic notes. The ascending/descending thing is related to my tendency to string together multiple motifs to get some variation in an arrangement. So, often with walking lines, the bass player will do an extended up/down run for emphasis as they near the end of a bar or section. It would be fun to append that run to a walking line. Again, this is icing on the cake type stuff. The fact that you got the walking line close enough to believable as a human player means that I can be greedy and ask for the stars and the moon!

  • A new version of Piano Motifs (v4.89) is now available. What’s new in this version:

    • Added options to the Walking Bass Accomp Style: Scale and Chromatic.
    • New default UI color scheme.
    • Fixed issue where for certain accompaniments the 3rd track had dissonant notes.
    • Improved the Melody Harmony generation when using the Tonic or Root options.
    • Minor fixes and improvements.

    Enjoy!

  • Thanks!!

  • Pretty amazing and not at all trivial the app still gets updates, and free ones too. Thanks dev

Wow, that was fast! I’ll give it a try and report back, maybe with a new track?

  • There’s a new Piano Motifs video tutorial available. This video is the second in a series of tutorials that cover the Piano Motifs Settings, in this case the Melody Settings.

If you’re interested, you can find it here:

  • Great! Learned something new, I wasn´t aware of all the Melody Seq options in the example around 4:55. Looking forward to the next tutorials.

  • I enjoy these tutorials as well, very helpful.

Glad to hear you got some new information out of the tutorial. The Melody Seq feature allows you to create a cadence or rhythm in the Melody. You can use it with the Melody Constraints to guide the Melody. If you're interested, there is an example motif here:

A new version of Piano Motifs (v4.90) is now available. What’s new in this version:

    • Added a Random Option for Melody Harmony. When this option is selected, the harmony will be randomly generated for every note from any of the available harmony options.
    • Added Custom Voicing for Chord Accompaniments. With this setting you can customize the voicing you want for the chords in a motif by defining a Root Octave and Octave Shifts from this Root Octave for the different notes of a chord.
    • Minor fixes and improvements.

An example of a motif generated with the new Custom Voicing setting can be found here:

If you like the new features and are enjoying the motifs generated by Piano Motifs, please consider leaving a review on the App Store.

    Enjoy!

  • I'm not really into generative music. Piano Motifs is the exception. Wonderful app!

  • A new version of Piano Motifs (v4.91) is now available. What’s new in this version:

    • Added a new Extend option for sections in the Arrangement Screen. When the Extend option is On, the section will be extended by one bar which will sustain the last note(s) of the previous bar for both the melody and accompaniment.

Use this to create smooth transitions or endings in your arrangements.

    Enjoy!

thank you so much for the updates and these stellar tutorials.

The two best tutorials I’ve seen for IOS apps is your Piano Motif series, and @sfm ‘s Groove Rider2 series.

I spent all day yesterday going through your tutorials, and trying out my various synths as I dont have any great piano AU’s, and am blown away at capabilities of Piano Motif, the tutorials are fantastic and really show the range your accompaniment features provide to artists, sound designers.

just wanted to thank you for the updates and for helping us all elevate our sound.

    you rock!

Here is the link to the tutorial playlist. Each video/tutorial is short and absolutely worth reviewing, an absolute banger of a series.

Absolutely, he has an EDM tutorial- I've been using it with Poison-202, and DRC. You can pretty much do everything with Piano Motifs. Zoltan even did a Severance Theme with it. guns and roses guitar, game of thrones, etc... it's a generative colossus

    Here is the EDM one:

@egobeats, wow I had forgotten about that second video. Thanks for digging for examples.

@EnvelopeFollower, Piano Motifs is definitely versatile and can be a good idea starter for basslines and riffs. A while back @FloRi89 had made a video (with an older version, but it still applies) of how he created basslines using Piano Motifs:

A new version of Piano Motifs (v4.92) is now available. What’s new in this version:

    • Added new option for the 3rd Track: No Silent Bars. When this option is On and the Accompaniment has a silent bar, the 3rd track won't have one. The chord played on the 3rd Track for the silent bar will be the same as the one played on the previous bar.
    • Added the ability to change the BPM through text input. Press the BPM value and you can enter the BPM value you want. Please note that this will not be available when the app is an AUv3 in Sync Mode, since in this mode the BPM is controlled by the Host.
    • Added the ability to enter the Loop Count by pressing on the Loop value and selecting one of the options.
    • Fixed issue where when the Accomp Last Bar was used, the Voicing settings weren't being taken into account.
    • Fixed issue in the Arpeggio Sequence Accomp Style with Voice Leading option selected and a Time Signature of 3/4 or 6/8. The Arpeggio Sequence wasn't being generated as programmed.

With the new 3rd Track option, the 3rd Track (which is great for pads, strings, choirs, etc) doesn’t stop abruptly when there are silent bars in the Accompaniment, keeping the music flowing but allowing for pauses in the Accompaniment.

If you’re enjoying Piano Motifs and it’s frequent updates with new features please consider leaving a review in the App Store, it surely helps a lot.

    Enjoy!

  • Many thanks Fernando… you are very generous with your time… Piano Motifs continues to inspire me… this has the ‘No silent bars’ switched on, more or less everything else set to default…
