@oscillotus
This is the way!
Thanks. I know and have been using all sort of "night mode"
And since I now tapped into e-ink, I will try black and white mode on iPad. Not sure if that's scientifically better to human eyes
well black is no color - means pixel on display is just turned off - but pure white is basically mix of ALL colors - means including blue :-)) so this wont’t help much .. literally every pixel on your display consists from 3 luminiscent points - red, green and blue , and for strictly white color they all shine at maximum level
E-ink worls differencly - it’s about how much display reflects light which is coming on it from enviroment.. so black are absorbs everything, white are reflects everything .
This os very simplified description, in reality it is a bit more complicated, but this is enough to understand principle.
I have a roland fp30 in my bedroom. After put the kids in bed, I spent a few minutes playing meanwhile my wife reads.
Imagining Ralph Wiggum playing piano while having a wife 😯
😂
I am getting a pair this weekend and see if that helps. After all, only my eyes can tell the difference. Thanks for reminding me this.
I managed to try a budget one and indeed the display latency is a thing. Knobs becoming unusable and sliders still okay. Overall Koala experience is not ideal haha
+1 for the Roland MC-101
A pandora's box of secrets (...and multi-key shortcuts)
I love that it runs on 4xAA rechargeables too.
Things change as one of my frd with multiple Sonicware just told me their sequencers are quite different. I took a look and found the Mega Synthesis has a 128 patterns of 128 steps sequencer with 6 tracks 6(track 1-3)+4(track 4-5)+3(track 6 Sampler) max 13 Polyphony. This change the equation and make it a very budget and capable device that checked all my boxes
But then you have to ditch your peril sensitive sunglasses. Not a good tradeoff.
@Gavinski feel better after a few days with blue light filtering glasses, not sure if thats placebo effect haha
Nice lofi FMbox :-)
Indeed cheap and fun and night time friendly. I just little surprised their Liven series sequencers all have different spec.
OK, good to know!
Update of what I learned from the process.
1, no perfect "hardware" for any individual, any budget, any use case.
2, getting rid of what can't be standed for is more meaningful than what you must have
3, storage is more important than music related features, managing VERY limited storage on a budget device is a waste of my time/life
4, all boxes are FUN!
I think that the best groovebox for this purpose is the one that is easy enough to operate with your eyes closed
From this angle, Audiobook > paper book > ebook
And from gears I have tried, Behringer EDGE(or similar stuff) does just that.
Thanks! I had an eye on the Behringers as well!
Sonicware!
most Livens only come with 64 patterns, except MEGA and Wraps. Really nice to play with but too limited storage.
imagine your phone can only store 64 photos/videos
But I do like the no-screen, batteries and speaker.
>
Ditto
It's fun, fast, and has no screens.
Agreed. So much fun. But it does have a screen though
Yes but that is just for patternumber bpm and so.
No menus on screen.
Exactly! that's just a 4 digit calculator display, it is not a modern "screen" at all
The Move’s screen is used for all kinds of menus, sample-slicing, synth and fx parameters.
Update:
Been using a 2nd hand Model:Cycles for months and it does serve my primary purpose very well. I have been away from mobile and iPad screen before sleep since I own it and my sleep quality and overall health improved signaficantly.
I just secured my 2nd used bedtime hardware. A Liven 8bit wrap. I just have to say, most people don't get it. The 50 sec looper tracks make it a stripped down OP-1 alternative at very low cost. Good enough for my bedtime usage.
Even better it can feed M:C into aux in. Now I can layer some fancy chords over M:C.
I guess this is enough and I won't expand this setup until these devices broken.
Apropos of this thread, my old Novation Circuit has spent the past several years up in the magic attic stashed back in its box because it stopped working. A few weeks ago I took it down again and tried it, but tried it on a different power supply and – it works again! The power supply it came with is buggered, but the Circuit itself is working. I’m quite sure when I put it up in the attic it was because it would not work at all on any PSU or even batteries, it was just stone dead on its own. Now after all those years the attic has sorted it out to be an external PSU fault, while healing the Circuit.
I never got on with it when I had it before, for a few reasons, I’m still irked by not knowing what a knob will do, and I think a lot of Circuit-based jam sessions integrated a particular musical motif of “try a knob, no that’s not at all what I want, quickly move it back to where it was”, which is characteristic Circuit jam session style.
The other reason was that most of the sounds seemed to have a sort of underlying modulation to them which made even the simpler sounds among them seem a bit impure to me.
Also the internal software updates for it kept adding features but didn’t add extra buttons with labels, so I never comprehended the new features because either I had never been introduced to them properly, or they were mentioned, meant nothing, and I forgot them.
But the overall principle of a sequencer dominant box with a couple of synths and a sample-based drum machine in it is quite appealing, so I should see where it now fits in my gear (it makes the amount of gear I now have slightly too much, I thought it was dead) (I don’t have much gear and don’t want much gear, where would I put it).
Circuit, when you invest time to really learn all key combos an features (which is not easy) is then incrediby creative tool, true INSTRUMENT which feeds creativity as hell.. But it has slow learning curve, you must be willing to invest some time to make muscle memory about all combos, features, stuff.. but then - it GREATLY pays off.. when things clicks, you realise it's best "put ideas quickly to something working" tool in the market ..
