    Absolutely agreed! 💯❤️

  • iPastels is a great app on iPhone in case you want the pastels experience on the go! ❤️

Just created that in it. I think it's free for many features and a one-time $7 unlock for the "pro" features. Cool for iPhone art on the go. ☺️

Her painting was fantastic by the way. What a great video.

@NeuM While ProCreate is a great app for digital art and cartooning, Art Set 4 is amazing for mimicking traditional art supplies! Gave it a go, and holy shit it's wonderful, mate!

Right? It’s stunning how good Art Set 4 is compared to other paint apps.

I agree! Well, iPastels, while not exactly as realistic as Art Set 4, definitely is a decent alternative on iPhone if finger drawing is something you like. 😅

Edit: Can't fall back asleep for shit, so have another....

Neat! I will have to pick up art set 4 or ipastels. Looks fun. I found in my purchase history i had purchased the original artstudio app years ago. Works with my apple pencil today. Will have fun with that over the weekend.

Good call with Art set 4.

    Pastel wise on any apps.

Apart from color resolution and hover pencil ( which is a lot )

If generally making tests for real art materials.

Ipad 9 with pastels ( even fine lines )

    Is ok enough.

Even doing the above with real pastels. You wouldnt do as good.

Iv collected frames. So should practice small paintings. Then materials wont likely be wasted.

  • Not necessarily visual art but it’s certainly another creative outlet other than music ..
I hand make, hand cut , hand sew quality leather goods - wallets , bags , accessories …

Cool stuff! I love Art Set 4 and iPastels. I still prefer traditional oil pastels and indeed bought a new set of Sakura Cray-Pas oil pastels today for 12 quid from Blick's. The traditional art looks like, well, traditional art. 😂 But then again today in iPastels...

    Nice.

    I noticed lately watching videos.

A lot of the world orders from Jacksons art ( A london based store )

They must have been offering free shipping or have stock in other lands.

Not sure how it is for business with any tariffs, now.

But all pastels are on a deal at the mo ( I got a deal on the soft pastel sets I showed )

Perhaps the Sakura are the better choice anyway ( they probably are if I just guessed ) than any of the mid range pastel Im linking.

You are doing right thing by practising with cheaper pastels anyway.

You will have to buy excellent, if you want your paintings to be un-faded in 100s of years ( potentially a 1000 for acrylic )

    https://www.jacksonsart.com/colour/pastel/oil-pastel/x_quality--mid_range?product_list_order=price

Im trying to use the app how I might use materials but feel now I need to test materials first also.

Starting with black markers for shade ( perhaps even some greys ) for monochrome.

Then a wash of colours ( It has to be actual paint in the app ) but does appear like watetbased pastel.

    Then oil pastel.

The other layers are the underpainting ( a map to paint on ) plus shine through.

but kind of do what you are doing.

    Just colour abstracts.

I dont do weed but when I did.

Sitting with an ipad doing paintings would be insane.

    Just a online search

You can use Sakura. Then perhaps add Mungyo. Then if you must. A few senneliers. Iv got these. Tbh. They are as soft as they say. Either just a final touch. Or place in fridge. I guess they will melt in summer conditions. They feel melted anyway.

    https://artpandemic.blogspot.com/2021/01/oil-pastels-for-flowers-sennelier.html

The Mungyo might be a better purchase than the Sakura or be good for next purchase.

@sigma79 Jacksons Art sounds like an interesting place to shop. Bloody tariffs though as you mentioned, but we'll save that topic for the "Other" section, lol.

Yes, I've always wanted to try the Sakura Cray-Pas oil pastels. It's how Picasso got his start before WWII, in which case he worked with Sennelier himself to create the very expensive, creamy Sennlier oil pastels.

But yeah, I doubt the lightfastness of the beginner pastels I currently use, lol. It's why I take photos of the finished works right after I finish them, do a little colour adjusting with the camera roll's filters so I can get it looking exactly as I wish, and then post it online.

I do weed (one edible per night to help me sleep, which admittedly doesn't always work like last night), and even though I was up in the middle of the night for three hours, I was still high. I managed to make a couple pieces of art with iPastels while in that state, but not psychedelic colours so it appears. 😂

I do need to try Mungyo out. Cheaper than Sennlier, but still higher quality than what I currently use for traditional oil pastels. So yes, for my next purchase, if Blick's has Mungyo oil pastels in stock, I'm getting them!

(Then again, I'm interested in trying out Crayola's oil pastels sometime soon, both the 24 set and the 12 neon coloured ones.)

Yeah, I'm pretty decent with cartooning in ProCreate, but I suck at it with traditional supplies. This is one reason I dove into Abstract art this past week instead, and I'm enjoying the hell out of the process! And now, all I want to make is oil pastel drawings whether virtually in Art Set 4/iPastels or traditionally with oil pastels. All is wonderful, mate. :) Cheers.

And here's another piece I finished in iPastels while riding on the streetcar.

  • My level of painting. Iv only tried a few times on ipad. Stored gear for 12 years ( the paint ) and never applied colour at school 30 years ago ( a failure )

but its kind of ok. Although ideally id get way better.

Cant be bothered to keep painting for now.

I think its all about learning landscape sky and earth but gaining a photo and adding more objects.

  • Its sort of noob impressionist wanting to add detail.

  • @sigma79 To be fair, it doesn't look noob to me. Looks pretty fucking great actually. :) Don't doubt your abilities, but yeah if you don't wish to continue with the visual arts, it's all your choice mate. :) I'm not here to sway you one way or the other, lol.

Havent tested yet but hoping the neoart aquarelle and neocolor II will be best for underpainting ( over shadow anyway )

    Then add oil pastel.

The Neoart are discontinued so would have to switch to all neocolor II.

Perhaps Iv got the last box in the world.

You could be selective and buy a handful of neocolors yourself.

Will let you know if its good ( as acrylic underpainting might be more econmical )

Just think Id like to keep it pastel.

Same here when it comes to trad art. I'm not interested exactly in colored pencils although I have a nice set of Blick's pencils (manufactured by Koh-I-Noor) outside of cartooning. Even then, I kinda suck at trad cartooning compared to digital cartooning. But, yeah, pastels are definitely the medium I've sought after. It's like the crayon drawings I used to do as a youth, but now abstract.

A bit more of a figurative drawing, but still Abstract enough. So freeing to not hold myself down to standards that are tough on me. Cartooning (whether trad or digital) is NOT relaxing like I thought it was. It's more stressful. Abstract art is soothing to me, trad moreso than digital, but regardless of medium, it's fun to do.

Decided to make a pic of the discontnued NeoArt Aquarelle.

    At the time ( 2012- ish )

They were overall a bit more pro than the Neocolor II but generally the same.

Id be happy with all neocolor II instead but for some reason.

Its perhaps my favourite treasure ( its the most treasure like box )

    Im not wealthy.

Its just some people will store a Dom Perrignon.

I guess this is mine ( it will be sad when the last neoarts are gone )

  • Went over to my dad’s old house today to mow the yard and found my first serious painting attempt. Can’t remember how old I was when doing this, I was a kid. Also don’t remember why I used so much yellow. Probably didn’t have any other colors, or my older sisters wouldn’t let me have any more. Supposed to be a dog. Wasn’t trying to be abstract, but somehow kids paintings often turn out that way, lol.

The Caran Dache Neopastel ( oil pastel )

Are the same colors as the wax Neoart Aquarelle and Neocolor II.

    So easier to color match.

So that should work well ( hopefully over grey paper ) the wax pastel, without interfering too much with the oil pastel.

The wax pastel could also work under soft pastel

Although you can wet the soft pastel anyway or not wish to do so.

The amount we spend on ipads though.

This are still the same value since 2012.

Ipad is quite essential though ( we should demand more value )

  • edited April 26

    The spare giant neoarts.

Its what I bought before buying anything.

Went to a whsmith to buy paper etc.

    See a 10 box.

Then realised caran dache were a good brand ( apart from potential wax bloom you might get from wax products )

I guess thats what made me buy the 60 box and other sets.
