I came across this video last night where Johnny Marr talks about his guitars. I’ve not finished watching yet, but seems a must watch for any Smiths fans interested in guitars.
Anybody know what model he is playing there? Looks/sounds similar to a guitar I use to have.

Looks like twin brother to a Gibson I had as a teenager which, sadly, was stolen. Not even sure what exact model that one was.
I've been hoping to find another similar-looking and well-regarded Yamaha Red Label FGX5 (MIJ) locally (if one coes along) just to try; they run a still steep to me $1745. Another similar looking dread I once owned (and later sold) was a Martin which cost me about $1200 in the mid 1980s. Lately I don't have an acoustic which sounds great in a room though I do have a Takamime which sounds really, really good plugged in via a soundhole pickup and which lends itself more to "acrobatic" lead playing than any other acoustic I've ever tried.
Just got my first tube ever:
PRS MT 15 (v1 - the original, which is honestly my preference , big time - I waited for v2 to come out and last month it did so I grabbed one used) + Harley Benton G212
Basically it’s like a better, tighter Mesa rectifier sound , eerily close, but super super tight low end. Then the cab is HB but it’s actually 2x12” v30 celestions in a real wood box cab.
It is literally the best tone I’ve ever heard from a tube amp. It’s like a fender twin or Princeton reverb on cleans and then Mesa in hi gain. So much so that when I found this quarter stack for $600 ($1200 in store , $680+$275 + tax/shipping.. I just grabbed it.
I bought a noise gate and tube screamer and this now djents like a monster - think periphery, animals as leaders, meshuggah, above the burial. Gear and amps and pedals can turn into another rabbit hole so I’m glad I won’t be heading into that world - I got what was looking for and I’m out.
Anyway an axe Fx iii is the best you can do for your recording at home, but as far as playing, nothing beats a tube amp for fun, jams, or live playing.
@yellow_eyez I remember quite a while back when I was shopping for an amp to end all amps. The one that I could settle down with forever and never really need for more. The Tremonti was on a very short list. Congrats on a nice purchase.
Thanks a lot man. Yeah dude. It took me a long time. I always wanted a Mesa rectifier but could never afford it or then later justify the price or room or watts. So I had solid states and modelers my whole life but someone said you just have to get a tube when I got my customs guitars because there’s nothing like a tube amp in the room feel. I was doubtful so I said let me keep it conservative. I went on the hunt for the “lunchbox” to end all amps (meaning a sub 40 watt)
It had to be a SICK modern metal hi gain
It had to have beautiful fender like cleans
It had to be able to sound good with split coils
It had to be under 1000 all in
The mt 15 is a mystery to me how it achieves it all and is a beast, pumping closer to 25-40 watts by many opinions. I can’t beleive it but I think it might be the best modern metal /djent amp out there.
I was under budget getting the Mesa clone head ($400) and mesa clone cab ($200), so when I didn’t realize I needed a noise gate, and tube screamer to achieve the tones I was seeking (TS is not for gain whatsoever, the amp is all the gain, TS is tone sculpting only), I said ok $200 cap on that…turned out I got the fortin Zuul noise gate clone ($137) and the modern day version of the TS for modern metal and djent ($60) horizon devices precision drive clone, so I stayed under budget by $3…luckily I don’t care about fx, but in case I do, I can throw a little reverb or delay or chorus from my 25 year old boss me-30 lol
Total cost for rig - $800
I’m not going down a gear rabbit hole and I’m calling it there but I’m very happy with it.
(Only flaw seems to be a sporadic hum in fx loop due to poor grounding with wires but I’m working on mitigating it)
If you ask me man, you don’t even need a TS with this; but I didn’t want to deviate from the formula and I said hey for $60 I’ll know if it’s worth it or not…and if not, it’s the least of all the expenses in the signal chain. In fact, it was the only thing I was hesitant to pull the trigger on on this whole thing, but my buddy said, don’t think of the TS as a boost pedal but a tone sculpting pedal…and he’s right : in djent you don’t really use the gain knob, if at all.
What is your main tube amp? What others do you like. And what did you end up with in your hunt?
Let me just say if you can grab a rig like this , I totally recommend it, and go for v1; it’s better man if u ask me.
I had dual terror and as great as it sounds I wasn't happy with its limitations. I ended up with an EVH 5153 el34 50watt. I love the clean and really wanted 3 channels in the end. It has great tonal range as well as gain range which I love. Funny thing is I ended up with a Rockerverb Mk3 so I don't even use the EVH for anything but cranked awesomeness.

My new tone
I only have 2 cabinets. Both Orange with v30 speakers. I'd like something different but it's a rabbit hole I don't want to go down. Parts from having owned other cabinets I am pretty happy to just stick with the v30 option. Did you try any other cabinets or speakers?
Nah man: I only had one ever in mind and that was the Mesa dual rectifier. It’s a v30 celestion 4x12 or 2x12 horizontal or vertical stack, and it’s essentially the same thing as the can I have. The amp head (mt 15) is in my opinion a better amp sonically, it’s just that it’s more like 25-40 watts rather than 100 watts but I don’t need that much power anyway. I was looking for amazing cleans like a fender and amazing gain like a mesa dial recto so when I heard the hype, heard all the reviews and recommendations, and knew what I wanted, I just set up one buy, and just pulled the trigger after about 5 chugs
IOw I didn’t see the point in trying other speakers when I got what I was looking for half the price albeit used . I was interested in the orange cabs but end of the day what matters are the speakers , and this is authentic vintage 30s - the cab itself is made of wood and actually a lot better than I expected for the price (the speakers alone cost as much as the cab so it’s hard to imagine how, but hey, I don’t cared I wouldn’t buy a HB guitar but I have no problem buying their cabs - nearly as good as a Mesa)
I'd agree with that. As long as the cabinet is structurally sound and dense enough I'd be happy. The only thing I can think of is weight. If for example a similar cab loaded with v30 speakers weighs twice as much it could indicate a different quality of timber. That could lead to vibrations causing issues. Thankfully, issues that should be able to be solved with wood glue and screws. What was you H&B? 2x12?

I think the main difference is that if both cabinets survived an apocalyptic event and started to rot, in time there's a possibility that the Orange would turn to dust mere moments later than the H&B.

Yeah man, look is the orange and mesa marginally better, most likely yes- given the choice for the same price, would I go with brand name over generic - yes. However - because the dude had the head AND Vintage 30 2x12, I looked at the prices and I said “I can either grab this ALMOST cab, I could search for a deal on another, or and up paying $400 anyway to thomann or $600-800 to sweetwater or GC for the brand name.
I’m super happy because my budget was $1000. I got the right for 600, my pedals came to 200. (With the last 200 I got a lil Teenage engineering gear I was eyeing for years but never thought I could get this price so I’m going for it before I c change my mind)
But I can’t wait for my gate and TS - arriving Saturday
In terms of the build quality, the early ones seems to have a problem with glue ? But this is solid I kinda dropped one side a little and it didn’t sway, bend , or rock in its form, I mean like I said, is it a mesa tank, doubtful, but does it sound nearly as good Def
I mean when I heard it I was sold immediately, like I mean 6 second and I paid the man lol
My only concern is I went with the horizontal, and someone said vertical is better…but I can just put it on its side no?
Or my cousin is a carpenter and offered to make a box for me to put the cab on for height; like maybe a foot high rectangular box for the cab just to sit on as a stand ???
First tube amp ever and my friend said it should be ear height at least when playing, right now it’s about 7 inches off the ground .
I nearly bought a vertical. I've had a half angled 2X12 before. It was a loud beast. Personal preference for me is just to be able to put my ear in a sweet spot. The Orange 2x12 speakers are offset but nowhere near a vertical cab of course. I just have one up on a desk beside me and the other on the ground. So I get the best of both worlds. One cabinet right beside my ear, AND one on the floor to remind me of the regret that comes with wasting my life to the point where I can't even spend a few extra hundred thousand on a house with slightly more room for guitar gear. I know, life is tough right?
P.S. what is the perfect length send return cables and where the freak can I find them!

For cables I thiught 5 feet was too long, and in most cases , 1 could be too short, just in case you need some slack: so I looked for 3 footers
