Same! At the least it will suffer from the same unavoidable issues that Logic does in regards to the use of auv3 plugins that are not M1/Mac enabled. Same goes for the reverse direction as well (Mac to IOS). It would be interesting to know how gracefully it deals with that issue though.
Anyone currently working between the two platforms with BAM?
1- You can transfer projects between platforms but if you're using audio files from your local system they won't load. You'll have to add them manually after. (This feature is in BAM to-do list for future implementation)
2 - Tracks can't be freeze but you can export them. (We'll have to discuss that feature here. Since we don't have a timeline, the freeze implementation won't be so straightforward)
3 - Yes you can. BAM has a built-in recorder which will let you record external audio or the internal master output. And you can export individual tracks out the whole project (with scene follow actions you can setup a song structure and export it)
4 - Doesn't support MPE (Is in BAM list for future discussion)
@xglax thanks for the thorough reply. Cool, will buy on both platforms:)
hey @xglax , how did it go?
oh, this thread. time to revisit it.
to put it short – i'm still happy with BAM on desktop, but on iPad it's superseded by GR2.
there are two main reasons:
1) Launchpad integration. in BAM it's not bad. in GR2 it's just brilliant, so GR2 with Launchpad is just significantly quicker.
2) though BAM is stable nowdays, for live performances i choose Jim Pavlov's stuff because it's rock solid and i never had a single issue with it. (well, i managed to crash GR2 a couple of times – but always with 3rd party AUv3's.)
Put reading glasses on? Fixed.
Interesting. Thanks.
Does GR2 have its own FX, instruments and MIDI utilities? And if so, how good are they?
yes, and they are good
yes, plus Pure Acid and Poison-202 integration (non-AUv3 way)
depends on what exactly you need.
in my particular case, i was not completely happy with built-in stuff for what i want (complex semi-generative parameter modulations) – but found the workaround: GR2 has its own virtual MIDI port, and Drambo does my complex MIDI stuff, and they coexist very well so far (that is utterly important for me because it's intended for live performances).
i would say they are reliable workhorses.
nothing too fancy – but enough for real-world mixes where most of sounds are bread-and-butter sounds.
also, you have 3 instrument layers per part – this allows to overcome quite a few of instrument limitations pretty easily, so i wonder whether i really need 3rd party instruments that much (Pure Acid and Poison-202 not counted).
Cool. tks
Is this feature is under work or ever coming?
Sometimes is quite limiting to not be able to use the internal keyboard that an AUv3 was designed to be used with. (e.g. Tardigrain keyboard, or DRC chords-keyboard)
Does this have a good selection of scales for the keyboard and can you use AUv3 Instruments and Effects in it?
Can you also save a Project to iCloud so it’s accessible from both iPhone and iPad?
BAM already has this feature. In the engine panel you need to arm it here:
If you then start recording the clip will record the midi coming directly from the AUv3
You can select various scales in BAM's internal keyboard:
The composer will also reflect the selected scale with red markers.
AUv3 can be loaded either as instruments or effects.
You can’t save directly to iCloud, but you can export projects and save them on your device. From there, you can transfer them to iCloud and import them on another device.
Keep in mind that unless you’re using samples from the built-in banks, the exports won’t include custom samples — you’ll need to manually add those to BAM afterwards. We plan to improve this behavior in the future by allowing users to choose whether they want to include the samples used in the exported file.
Brilliant, thank you 🤩 Already bought it yesterday having watched the 8 Part ‘Manual’ Series on YouTube and of course some of Leo’s ( @sfm ) excellent tutorials. It looks great!
I am just okay with that but I got BAM a couple months back and honestly, it’s been a mixed bag. Works fine most days, but when it glitches… ugh. Had a similar issue before with a Hisense product and had to go through Hisense customer service https://hisense.pissedconsumer.com/customer-service.html —not fun at all. So yeah, hoping BAM doesn't go down that road.
Hi @sinosoidal ,
I’m really starting to enjoy using BAM on iPad.
I would really appreciate it if you could add the ability to midi map projects with program changes, like in AUM or Loopy Pro.
This would allow me to load a project directly from my Digitakt 😍
Ah thanks a bunch! I figured out I didn't have that button shown at all. Imaginando guys help me figure out that I wasn't getting version updates because I was still on iPadOS 15, and somehow BAM was switched to require minimum version 17 on order to run.
(I'm not sure why tho. Everything was working very well, and lighter on CPU [!!], also on version 15)
After the OS update, the button showed up and finally I can correctly record MIDI input from the AUv3
.
Did I miss the thread where people spoke about how fantastic the drum samples are in BAM? There are tonnes of seriously great samples in there. Would have been worth the price for just these. Feel like I’ve been sleeping on BAM, it’s lovely.
I've finally spent enough time with it to get a pretty good idea of how it works. It's actually, a pretty good workflow. At this point the only thing that will stop me using it is lost samples, sample playback issues (like hey, I didn't program that!) and PC issues I'm having. It is so close to a cross platform tool. I don't understand why developers don't implement a monolith save option. If I could save a file and it would put all files in a project directory, to be used on Mac, PC. iPad whatever it would be very handy.
Thanks for noticing that!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. We are planning a strong interation to BAM in the last quarter of the year. We will definitely work that out. We had already a backlog entry for that specific issue.
Midi mapping of scenes would be great!
This one would help me to replace my elektron boxes.
This is also on backlog! Until the end of the year, hopefully!
Do the oscillator & FX engines have the same sound/character as DRC?
As someone who occasionally uses an iPhone for this stuff, fiddling around with AUV3 windows on a smaller screen can be a pain in the ass, so I’m looking for a simple DAW or groovebox with good built-in plugins.
It just so happens that DRC is my favorite synth, so it would be cool to have it built into a groovebox.
EDIT: Does the oscillator engine have oscillator sync for OSC2?
I love BAM for what it can do, and it does a lot of really neat stuff. If there’s a roadmap out there, please add my vote for a drum sequencer that supports labels (BD, SD, etc.). I really appreciate the features that have been added in the past year. The generate, mutate chord/melody and randomize note features, and MIDI FX recording are some of my faves. Keep up the great work!
