I prefer this one to TAL (I own both). This one is universal and has lots of little quirks, in AudioThing style, like the different chorus models, the unison and the built-in FX rack. But I’m a real sucker for that Juno sound, maybe I’ll try making some synthwave!

I’ll test it, but I only have an ancient iPad Air 2 for that 😂

  • Sweet! Thanks Samu.

While I didn't do any in-depth comparisons with TAL during JUNE beta it does feel like it uses a lot less CPU.

Here's 4 instances of JUNE in Cubasis just for fun using some of my presets that are included...

...I make every synth do the 'Chip Dance' at some point :sunglasses:

Looks like AudioThing is doing a Cherry Audio on this one with the addition of useful effects in the synth. Thats a good thing. And to their credit, the desktop plugin is undercutting Cherry Audio and TAL-Software by quite a bit for their intro. (List price of $69, intro price of $39)

    https://www.audiothing.net/instruments/june/?mc_cid=89cd409fb5&mc_eid=3663cc8047

Despite whatever quirks it may have, I still love the simplicity and ease of use of TAL-U-NO-LX on both iPadOS and macOS so I won't be getting rid of it, but I just might be open to getting this one on sale for desktop if it sounds and performs great. Downloading the test version now...

    Perfect for the test.

  • OK... initial impression... I did a side by side comparison against TAL-U-NO-LX and found I was getting a better sound out of the TAL synth.

Maybe that's just my own bias and I'm more used to whatever uniquely different things are in the TAL synth. I'll do a bit more testing and dial in the exact settings and then see what I'm hearing.

The TAL is a fantastic sounding synth with loads of amazing presets. We’re lucky to have both.

    Between the 3 I think of off the top of my head;

    • AudioKit’s - Synth One J6

AK synth (like all AK synths) not a real emulation, It's basically "just" ROMpler containing samples from hw and some generic envelopes and filter (average quality, in my opinion) .. as soon as you aren't too much into sound design (in purists sense) and you just want something what sounds rekatively Juno-ish (cause it's basically sampled HW), then this will be probably enough for you .. If you search for truthful emulation, full blown synths with all details of oscillators, filters, envelopes and LFOs behaviours - then TAL or AudioThing is your choice

    • TAL Software GMBH’s - TAL-U-NO-X
    • AudioThing’s - JUNE

    What’s are the differences?

This is my question too .. these two are both real emulations .. TAL-U-NO-X is fantastic .. question is what new brings JUNE on the table .. Small advantage is JUNE works also on iPhone, where TAL-U-NO-X is iPad only

EDIT: I was wrong here with AK One J6 .. it’s not ROMpler like Nerd or Viral .. sorry for missinformation, my appologize

Yes, I have thousands of presets for TAL-U-NO-LX and they are really easy to find and organize outside of the synth on desktop. A major plus. There are few patches in the JUNE, if that’s important for people. I like having a nice compliment of patches to click through, but they don’t prevent me from making my own.

hm checked some more settings on JUNE ... i would say i subjectively like TAL filter implementstion a tiny bit more (especially when self oscillating) but probably only one real signifficant difference for most people is that TAL has Unison mode where JUNE don't .. June has more buold in FX but especially when it comes to reverb i like TAL one much more ... UI feels a bit better fine tuned to me in TAL ..

In general , my choice is TAL

edit: i'm dumb , JUNE has Unison too, but without stereo spread. TAL Unison includes also stereo spread

    Good looks! Thank you 🤘🏽🙏🏽

Gav in this thread has provided more context to his earlier video, which is a great watch.

I’ll end up going with the AudioThing one in time if I end up needing something like this. Based on the iPhone availability and being more engrained in the App Store than the other app. (If I were to have bought TAL years ago, then obviously I wouldn’t have this extra thought)

Couldn't resist and bought JUNE ... i would say if you are purist TAL is better i terms of filter when self oscillating .. especially in high range .. this may sound like detail but important ine which will affect overal sound
also TAL can play unison, JUNE don't

so if you ask me, TAL is slightly better

I agree. The JUNE sounded muffled/muddy in my quick testing and I couldn’t improve it. That was the problem.

Wow, I don't find June muffled sounding at all. Did you open up the filter cutoff?

  • the fact thaz JUNE works on iPhone and TAL doesn’t may be important information too…

    @NeuM @Gavinski

Yeah i don’t think JUNE sounds muddy .. actually exact opposite, looks JUNE filter passed through more high frequency content but actually HW filter passed through less HF content so TAL filter is tiny bit more close to HW by actually making higher pitched sounds containing less high frequency content..

    Hope it makes sense.

Still , for me TAL winner (but just by tiny margin, they both are nice synths)

Interesting Dendy. Actually, when I was doing the filter sweeps I noticed that the frequencies after 12 kHz suddenly dip a bit, I thought it must be my hearing going lol. Yeah about muddiness, to me the June sound is tighter and more defined than Taluno. Especially compare the saw -plus sub sound which cyberheater mentioned earlier. I think June sounds much better in that particular combo than Taluno.

Btw, about J6, isn’t it also modeled? Webpage describes it as a synth and says “Synth One J6 doesn’t try to fake analog…it recreates it. We recorded vintage Juno-106 and Jupiter-8 synth oscillators, then let some smart ethical AI algorithms study every nuance. The result? Genuine analog warmth, random imperfections, and sounds that actually breathe. Not imitation, it’s Innovation!”

But yes, not sure whether they carefully studied the filters etc too or just used the same filters they use in other recent releases.

  • I’m comparing both TAL and June filters to my hardware Roland JU-06 which is using ACB modeling and the software versions both sound better with a more pronounced chirp at higher resonance settings then the hardware recreation. I’m not sure what is more accurate.

To my ears the filters on the June and TAL sounds almost identical. The more I play with them the closer they seem to get.

  • Hm... i changed my mind ... JUNE sounds better .. and it has TWO ENVELOPES !!! This is massive improvement.

If anybody interested in 14 minutes of tweaking on same loop then be my guest :-)

In general it is easier for je to get exactly sound i want to hve from JUNE..

I’ll continue to evaluate, but I’m able to get the exact sound I need quicker with TAL. Thats not the case for me with JUNE yet.

  • After spending more time then I should. I think the TAL chorus sounds closer to the Roland JU-06A. There isn’t much in it.

In terms of absolute accuracy I’m giving the nod to June. The sub being perfectly in phase with the saw/pulse is a bigger deal to me and really important for those solid sounding bass sounds that the Juno is rightly famous for.

I’m still going to using the TAL because the built in delay and reverb are fantastic and are beautiful for arps and pads.

Give it time haha. Consensus is definitely shaping up that June is the better sounding of the two. The main drawback of June is that it's not mpe (for me anyway this is a major drawback). On most other fronts, I think it is an improvement on Taluno. Tastes do differ of course, and Taluno does still sound very good.

  • Second envelope is a nice inclusion though not authentic to original. I'm guessing it's optional?

  • I grew up with 1 envelope Roland synths so the extra envelope in June is a nice addition. I prefer its interface to Taluno which is important to me. It immediately seemed more accessible. Also, easier on old eyes! Has a randomizer which can give a great start on new sounds. Sound wise I don’t find them significantly different. I see myself using June more but Taluno won’t go anywhere because of the number of excellent presets.

  • From the init patch, enabling both chorus effects, does that sound right? The TAL version sounds very different, but I don’t really know what’s the right behavior.

  • Glad you’re enjoying JUNE! It’s been in development for almost a year, so I’m really happy to finally see it out in the world.

Since there are already a few JUNO emulations out there, I wanted to briefly explain what aspects we focused on when developing JUNE, and how we approached some of the trickier details of the original hardware, especially in the filter and chorus sections.

One particularly interesting behavior of the original JUNO, in certain settings, is a slight delay of the filter state, around 1 to 2 ms, which can cause micro clicks or transient artifacts. When used intentionally, those clicks can add a distinctive character, something I have not seen any other emulation reproduce accurately. We have tried to model all of the edge cases, reconstructed the filter circuit in detail, and spent months comparing with the hardware. We also compared our emulation and the JUNO 60 in our studio to a JUNO 106, and the behavior is nearly identical. The 106 VCF should be the same, just repackaged in a different chip.

Regarding the chorus, in the hardware, when both Chorus I and II are active, the BBD delay lines are cascaded, which effectively causes the signal to become mono. Other emulations handle this differently, but I think that’s part of what gives the hardware its unique character. Another thing I find missing in some emulations is the classic BBD chorus noise, which yeah, can be annoying (and that is why we made it controllable), but it is also again part of that vintage sound. BBDs are noisy!

  • How is the presets selection ? How many presets ?

  • Super sweet

Not true, J6 is not a rompler and doesn’t contain any samples. You’re right that it’s not a true Juno emulation though.

It’s more of a Juno/Jupiter hybrid kinda trip.

I got gifted June (thanks J!) and so far I’m digging it! I gotta say I’m strongly preferring the preset manager in June . Already have 3 patches saved
