    No it’s the ARP Odyssey, hence the name. Yes, the Odyssey is like a stripped down 2600, it’s more of a traditional monosynth. AFAIK it is not Auv3 though so it’s dead to me.

    There isn't a "best choice" for the genre, it's more that a lot of synthwave is quite basic, and is influenced by music that was created on older gear that was limited.

    The Juno types of synth are 100% able to be used as anyone's sole synth for synthwave, whether or not they're "the best" is subjective and dependent on what you're after.

    They aren't capable of overly complex sounds of extreme layering, they don't have infinite oscillators or a wealth of fx and modulation etc. At their heart, they're a basic synth and that's more than anyone needs to make synthwave music.

    If you want to hear music that makes a whole lot of use out of a Juno - try Bleachers, their music is absolutely drenched in sounds from a Juno (a real Juno-6 though, not a software imitation).

    I forgot about that one. I think it was a victim of the switch to 64 bit, so I doubt Arturia will re-write that and maybe toss in AUv3, but it would sure be nice if they did. Now I feel I need to use my old iPad more, and return to an IAA oriented workflow.

    Yes you are right they are Chillwave and Dark Synth. Both styles are sub genre of Synthwave.

    Chillwave is not a subgenre of Synthwave, they were created simultaneously and are pretty distinct. I would never describe Neon Indian or Washed Out or Memory Tapes as Synthwave, heck, some of them barely use synthesizers 😆. But that’s getting pretty off topic, no need to pursue a debate on the subject.

    @Squishy Giorgio Moroder is another big influence. That Italo Giallo soundtrack sound. Or check out the soundtrack for To Live and Die in LA. You take that raw sound, slow it down, add some reverb and woozy tape effects and you’ve got Synthwave.

    Thank you for pointing my error on Chillwave. I had a dive in its history.

It’s got wave shapes inspired by the Virus TI2 (recreated and renamed for legal reasons) plus a bonus XL bank of exclusive post-processed sounds I made myself for the app. Think of it as the soul of a Virus mixed with some modern sound design and sample layering, kind of like a Prophet X.

    With VIRAL and NERD, the idea was basically “what would those companies build if they started from scratch for iOS?” Not clones. Starting over focused on workflow, ease of use, and that same tone and spirit that made the originals special. Same DNA, less menu diving, and honestly just FUN to play.

    J6 has its filter and half of its oscillators modeled directly after the Jupiter 8 using machine learning. Fun fact, in the old blind tests here on the boards, about eighty percent of listeners thought it sounded more like real hardware than Roland’s own two hundred dollar VST.

    Over the last few evenings I started writing a script to convert TAL presets to June, just for fun. So far, the results are interesting and as expected they sound quite different on most presets. This is partly due to differences in features, the sounds of the oscillators and the filter.

    For example, the Lfo in TAL has a random wave, June has sample and hold, the arpeggiator modes play differently and the pulse dco, to my ears, is hugely different.. Tal can go super thin and is fatter when square. June feels more retro in comparison like real hardware.

    I have converted the Bjoerns Preset Bank and Krezie Synthwave… should I share these on here? I’m worried breaking rules or ruffling feathers by essentially damaging the hard work of the original preset owners by translating these presets.

    Sharing the presets themselves wouldn't be ok though, unless the originals are free and the license allows redistribution.

    The preset packs I’ve tried are free but I don’t know what the redistribution rights are, so I’m being cautious. The script is written in Java (my main language) but I’ll port it to python or node if that’s awkward or annoying for people.

    Will commit it to GitHub tomorrow.

    Yup, as i already wrote, sorry, my mistake here, was not fully aware of J6 i though it's similar to other AK synths ..

    No it’s the ARP Odyssey, hence the name. Yes, the Odyssey is like a stripped down 2600, it’s more of a traditional monosynth. AFAIK it is not Auv3 though so it’s dead to me.

    While it isn’t AUv3, imo it might be the best-sounding virtual analog on iOS. The Odyssey also has an interesting FM implementation. I hope it won’t be too long before they release the AUv3 version.

    I'll try to be as helpful as I can but to set some ground rules, I don't want to become IT support for your MAC/PC. Hope you understand :)

    I tried this script by following the instructions on 18 preset packs and while I haven't tested every sound, the results are better than I expected but still quite variable. I deliberately didn't copy the FX settings over - they are quite different beasts and it risked screwing up the sound further.

    Also, don't forget Chorus I + II is mono!

    edit: Just to be clear, we’re not importing or using any third-party presets. This is simply in response to users who already own other emulations and have asked for a way to bring their presets over. Surprisingly, we’ve received quite a few requests for that.

    I found at least 3 different versions of the TAL preset file. The main issue I had was they changed the number of time based options in the lfo and arp at some point in the past. I've done my best guess using an old manual and it will do for now.

    Having played around some more, even though some presents sound different I think I prefer the way they sound in June... It's warmer, like an old piece of kit. Top job you guys have done on this synth.

    I feel like J6 has the synth wave Juno sounds pretty well covered. While June is a faithful reproduction(emu) of the bare synth. We have some great preset folks, it’s not a bad idea for someone to make some presets for The sx1000, res-09, and June.

    @DMTcymatics does some dope synth wave stuff, as a matter of fact- I believe there might be some synth wave presets from him in J6.

    I overlooked how good the RNDM button in AudioThings emu’s are… you can poop out hundreds in an evening easily.

    I think I overlooked it because it actually randomizes the settings, opposed to cycling thru presets rompler vs emulation behavior I suppose.

    You're comparing the randomizer behaviour in J6 vs June, right? J6 picks presets at random, June randomizes settings. But this is not actually any rompler vs emulation behaviour. First of all, J6 is not a rompler remember, hehe. Secondly, even if it is was, it still has settings. Deciding to make the random dice randomize preset rather than settings was a decision Matt made, that's all. It could easily have been set up to randomize Settings.

First of all, J6 is not a rompler remember, hehe. Secondly, even if it is was, it still has settings. Deciding to make the random dice randomize preset rather than settings was a decision Matt made, that's all. It could easily have been set up to randomize Settings.

    The ideal is to have both options imo. One button to pick a preset at random, one to randomize settings, with lock, undo and redo buttons for the latter function!

    Here here! Apple should make it a requirement that when submitting an app with randomize settings functions, a lock on AT LEAST the mix knob or no release haha. I can think of a few instances I’ve rageclosed an app while randomizing cause I had to constantly go back to the mix knob to see if the results are even blended in
