I guess one follow-up question for Battalion users here: Is there a way through MIDI to trigger various patterns or sequences (similar to Hammerhead where each pattersn can be triggered on a key press)? How do you use Battalion within Logic or Cubasis and have different patterns play throughout a track? I don't need it to printo MIDI if I can trigger different sequences at different parts of a track, but I haven't figured that part out yet.

Battalion currently doesn't have patterns (though they are coming), so are you talking about changing presets?

Yes. I've seen some notes above about changing presets through Midi channel 11. I'll need to experiment. While I am loving creating patterns in Battalion, and it sounds fantastic, for practical recording purposes it seems to be lacking some key features, which is a real headscratcher for me. Unless you plan on having the same pattern (or preset, rather) playing throughout the entire track, I'm not too sure how this is realistically used inside a DAW without a lot of headache.

Yeah patterns and/or MIDI out is a must for me really. Can't wait for an update because otherwise I think it's incredible.

At the moment I'm just converting to audio in Logic, going back into Battalion and changing what I need to, convert to audio and repeat...

Really would love a Drum Computer style 'trigger patterns from midi notes' feature c-3, C#-3 etc. Or even better Hammerhead's system of holding/writing the note for as long as you want the pattern to play.

Oh, I didn't realize Drum Computer had that funcionality...I'll need to check that out. But, yes, I love Hammerhead's implementation.

Yeah from memory DC's way is to trigger a pattern (and therefore change the pattern when a different note is played) and Hammerhead's even better; not only to change the pattern but to only play it for long as the note is sustained.

I played around with this feature last night in Drum Computer and am quite pleased with it. And there a mute sections as well for when you want nothing to play (often very important). As I'm bouncing back and forth between Logic on a Mac and Cubasis/NS2 on an iPad (not on same project, but just in terms of where I choose to write/record at any given time), I was thinking of also getting Battalion desktop for the Mac, but it seems limited in recording features. On a whim I looked to see if Drum Computer Desktop was on sale, and it was for $50, so I picked that up for the Mac - it even has a very cool "drag and drop" MIDI feature to let you drag your sequence as MIDI into the track lane.

Ooo I missed the drag and drop feature from DC! I've just been hitting record to write the midi notes in.
Here's hoping Battalion gets all the above... and Pure Acid!

  • whats the status with the update/new beta!?

  • On page 14 of the Battalion manual, there is a cool tip for randomize on the Performance page:

But how can we achieve this on iOS? I can't see a way to lock the knobs (of the Performance page)on my iPad version.

Yup … on the PERFORM page, hit the Padlock then tap the controls you want to lock, then tap the padlock again to exit lock mode, then Randomise.

Oh wow. Thank you. Yes - that is the answer! I guess they need to update their manual someday with that. I appreciate the screenshot, as well.

  • Does anyone know if the clicking issue on the sample player has been addressed or does anyone have any thoughts on it?
I’m thinking about getting it but I’m concerned about being irritated by this. Nu Trix the synth guy mentions it here at 12:53

I've tried dozens of samples and have never run into that once.
In fact, I found the same sample and visible settings he's using there, and there is no click for me.

Well, it does click, this is easy to reproduce, and it's happening because the note is being triggered over the previous one. Each voice is monophonic, so when you trigger it the previous note is cut off. It clicks because it doesn't cut at a zero crossing, it cuts immediately.

So it's something that will happen if you are rapidly triggering certain samples (not every sample will produce this kind of click sound). You could mitigate this by tying the envelope to the velocity modulation so that on rapid hits the envelope closes quicker than the gate. I do think the playback engine could be improved on this point---ideally, the sampling engines would have their own attack and decay settings apart from the envelope.

Ahh. I was testing with a steady four on the floor. Didn't overlap anything. 👍🏼
Repeating with rapid triggering on that same sample, I do get the click.

  • I noticed the click when overlapping, yes. But like others said, it can be mitigate slightly using envelopes and blending with the synth voice. And it isn't that obtrusive unless I'm working on a super quiet composition. Most times, the click is barely noticeable when there are a lot of percussive sounds happening.

Of course, it would be great if the dev fixes this by giving us a Snap to Zero Crossing function.

  • Whenever this thread pops up I get inspired/reminded to spend some time in Battalion. As good as it is as an AU, the standalone is the most fun. Reminds me of an Elektron box.

  • Thanks @wim, @timfromtheborder, @tubespace - perfectly cleared up. I’ll drop NuTrix a line in the comments section to point him to the replies here 👍🏻

I love this! It's been great to have this playing while doing some work - it helps me focus and I'm getting into the groove.

  • 1.5.0 development is coming along well. In addition to patterns, Battalion will now have a new preset browser with tags, ratings, favorites, etc. It's a lot more pleasant to use on iPad, and other Unfiltered plugins will be upgraded with it once we're happy with the design.

Copying my post from the beta thread:
I just uploaded a new 1.2.0 beta that should be up on TestFlight soon. I received a number of reports that AUv3 multi-channel stopped working in the new Logic Pro. This is now fixed and will be available shortly.

  • New update!
Phase Stretch and new Garbage-Fi engines look interesting. Plus can use it on iPhone once again.

  • I have battalion on ipad
But for the iphone version I have to pay again?

I double checked my app buying history and I paid for it
and it was not refunded or anything like that.

  • I don’t get how anyone would wanna run an app that involved on a phone screen what with iPads being so cheap now

You won't actually be charged. It's the age-old App Store weirdness. You have to go through the whole process of purchasing, including authorizing the payment, then eventually it will say

This update is free because you own a previous version of this item. To get this update now, select OK.

I've never heard of anyone actually being charged in this situation. But for this amount, proceed at your own risk (and be sure you're signed in with the same Apple ID on both devices.

fwiw, I just went through the process, and wasn't charged for Battalion on the iPhone.

    Yes it feels very risky.
Even if I know I got the ipad version.
It feels like a gamble 🙂

Best way is to go to your account, tap on apps and search there. You should see the app listed and a simple download icon rather than go through the prayidontpay shuffle

    Edit ymmv don’t @ me😅

  • It isn’t listed there
    Only in the purchase history.

I also did not get a refund on it
So thats not the reason it isnt listed
    Weird

  • Hey everyone, the iPhone version should be included with the iPad purchase. Let me check out what's going on. I've seen instances where it takes a day or so for the new platform to roll out to existing purchasers. Please know that we do not want to charge you twice for the iOS version.
