I wonder how this new release would have been if Apple reportedly hadn't put a huge focus on stability and optimization for iOS 9 :) Here we are all over again. Sorry but to me Apple is clearly communicating that the focus on iOS is innovation and disruption, even if it breaks things each and every year. If we want our stuff to work in the long run, and build a reliable workflow aound it, it'll be a long time before we can depend on iOS it seems.

My advice is downgrade back to iOS 8.4.1 while Apple is still signing it because for us who have installed iOS 9 and come into problems it will be too late to revert back to iOS 8 in a few days. I'm going to do that today when I get some time. I am really pissed about IAA on Cubasis and plugins not showing up on Audiobus and audio stutters and issues when mixing two synths via IAA on an iPad Air 2 which is supposed to be a powerful device. At least I've finally learnt my lesson never to install any major iOS updates that are just out that Apple throw at us iOS musicians like cream pies (or rather apple pies) in the face.

  • If you updated and are having problems it's not like it isn't common knowledge to wait until the dust settles if you have any concerns about apps not being compatible. It's been like that forever in the computer world.

People keep suggesting that it´s normal for OS upgrades to break things and force developers to either update their apps or go to the recycle bin, suggesting that early adopters (or even worse, lazy devs) are to be blamed. Honestly that´s not how I see it. I use Mac OS and Windows for mission critical things everyday, and I´m pretty sure I don´t have to worry about things stopping working every year. It could conceivably happen when there´s a major technology shift eg abandonment of DOS, migration from 32 bits to 64 bits, or change of CPU platform and manufacturer, but very seldom. Even considering the latest migration to Win10. And there´s no comparison between the difficulty of ensuring backwards compatibility for an open OS like Windows, and doing the same on a fenced one like iOS.

Nobody is forcing Apple to do a major iOS release every year, they do it because it is part of their strategy. If we don´t upgrade, older versions of iOS stop being supported, and new apps start relying more and more on the newer version. It is Apple´s job to ensure backwards compatibility and a smooth transition, and that´s why in part they get paid, at least by me.

At least with Windows and Mac OSX if the software isn't compatible then its possible to downgrade any time. However, with iOS Apple stops signing the older iOS versions which means you're stuck with an OS which isn't compatible with the software and if your iDevice goes into problems you are forced to use that newer OS whether you like it or not. I do wish Apple would sign older iOS versions just in case of problems.

I installed iOS 9 on my iPad Air 2 this morning. Some Synths using IAA don't work properly on Cubasis, Garageband and Beatmaker 2. Hopefully there is an update to fix the IAA issues. There is audio interference, distortion and clicking using iPolysix on IAA. There is also a problem using iProphet with IAA on Cubasis as there is severe latency problems and audio interference. Using iProphet with IAA on Beatmaker 2 works great its just when using with Cubasis there is an issue. I wonder if I should downgrade back to iOS 8.4.1 until those issues are fixed.

I am not having any problems with iProphet and Cubasis IAA. No latency or audio issues. Same setup. iPad Air 2, 128G, iOS 9.0.

In general no problem with Cubasis yet...

  • I have popping and clicking on occasion with IPolysix and IAA into Cubasis, as well as into another app I am beta testing, and that is on 8.4.1, so issue may not be directly related to iOS 9

    +1

  • I installed ios9 on my 4s last night, so far no worse than ios8 (which showed the phone down considerably) but no visible improvement yet. I know I have the dinosaur iPhone now, but still going to hang onto it as long as I can, I really don't want to pay for a new phone. I'm holding off for a little while on my iPad air, just until the dust settles.

  • Animoog into Filtratron smooth as butter in AB, though this app permission thing is getting old fast

  • I just posted this at John's musicappblog:

Perhaps something is amiss in the AppStore? All three of my KORG apps (Module, iM1, Gadget) do not show in the app updates. However, the app descriptions each show the new versions, which are .1 above mine. (Gadget in AppStore is at V1.2.3 while mine is at V1.2.2).

One bit of good news is that Gadget and iM1 both launched and worked on iOS9, and Module did as was reported…crashed on launch. I’m going to delete Module and reinstall to get the new version, since the other two worked, I’ll leave them for now.

I wonder if anyone else has encountered the same?

Learned this the hard way on ios7; took Apple almost 6 months to issue a fix, during which time my iphone was completely useless for audio.

  • @TozBourne Personally I think the App Store is bogged down therefore a bit glitchy. Sometimes I see the red badge icon stating that I have updates. In the store, under the Update tab, they only say "Open" as if I already updated them. I will randomly go back and and it will work as it should. Weird stuff

  • @TGIG -- interesting, my red badge still shows "3" which matches the same three in the AppStore, and were there yesterday. I just saw another thread that indicates that other peeps saw similar. I think I'll wait for the dust to settle before doing anything else.

  • I managed to get synths in IAA working in Cubasis by simply rebooting my iPad Air 2. However I still have the distorted audio problem in iPolysix when using IAA.

  • Anybody got picture in picture working?
iOS 9 Handbook would be nice.

  • I just checked and I now see all of the KORG app updates...and a bunch more!

  • Works very good on my 5s.No trouble at all but i didn't tested much music related stuff because the Air 2 is my music production center. And this will stay on 8.3 for a while.

Yep I did, with the Apple video player. It was a bit choppy though. Also note that Apps have to be updated for it to work...waiting for the next release of YouTube!

To get it to work, make a video full size and then tap on the PiP icon (one square overlaying another)

Hm, I tried YouTube in Safari and the app doesn't work, tried a videopodcast in apples podcast app, doesn't work. Then I tried ESPN.com in safari that worked.
I tried something different, embedded YouTube videos work https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/comment/157442/#Comment_157442
looks like the YouTube app needs an update. I'm sure I read it works with the podcast app too, that needs some work too, it used to play that podcast full screen, now it doesn't do that anymore ...

Any app wanting to take advantage of PIP mode needs to be updated to do so. There's a few that already have been updated like Pocket, Hulu, MLB, and the BBC player. I'm sure we'll see many others follow suit in the coming weeks, including YouTube. Google has been pretty aggressive about making the most of IOS technologies with their apps.

In the meantime you could save YouTube videos to Pocket so you could watch them in PIP mode right away. I already use Pocket every day so I plan to take advantage of that when I update my iPad Air 2 today probably.

  • I'm thinking of holding out 'bout a year should do it.

  • Updated my iPad3 after confirming that KORG apps and Cubasis works. Things feel a lot smoother and I also got back an extra 800MB of storage space after the update.

  • Safari still supports Insecure Cipher Suites. :/
TLS_ECDHE_ECDSA_WITH_RC4_128_SHA: This cipher use RC4 which has insecure biases in its output.
TLS_ECDHE_RSA_WITH_RC4_128_SHA: This cipher use RC4 which has insecure biases in its output.
TLS_RSA_WITH_RC4_128_MD5: This cipher use RC4 which has insecure biases in its output.

Read me the screen doesn't work anymore!
A I c seams like they changed the voices again, I picked something different works now. Puh
but the blue point doesn't follow the text anymore instead going from left to right it goes up and down randomly.
after a hard reset it took the male voices I choose, but the blue thing still doesn't follow the text.

  • @lala -- I'm not intending to be mean, but what the heck did you just post? I'm totally lost, although it probably doesn't matter, but I am curious if there's anything there I should know.

It's about the text to spoken word stuff ... ;)

  • They changed some of the dictionaries, it does also translate now. :)
