  • Not sure if that's gonna sort out the current internal sync wonkiness. I'd also rather have the link working over Bluetooth, pair and go.

  • Sounds a cool idea.

Some inner worries that here we have another SDK for Devs to keep their apps up to date with.

  • We're going to be releasing more info about it soon but I'm very excited and to me this is the solution to Sync problems.

  • Just read about it on CDM as well. I assume this is what @tarakith was talking about earlier?

@sebastian, I've only read the tiny blurb on CDM and it smells entirely like WIST to me. Is it different in some meaningful way? Are specs out for it somewhere?

  • The SDK is not public yet but yes, this is different and it's the solution for sync on iOS we've all been waiting for.

  • Very exciting news indeed :)
    Let's hope Apple doesn't break it :)

  • The Ableton Team is very dedicated to making this a winner. So are we.

  • Thanks Sebastian.

Most interesting to me: Link is prominent in the site's main navigation menu the the footer of every page at the Ableton.com site now says:

We make Live, Push and Link. With these products, our community of users creates amazing things. We are based in Berlin and our company is run by its founders. Many of us are musicians, producers and DJs.

Both of which says to me that they're all in on this.

To double down on that, searching for "Ableton Link" on Skynet reveals their intention to get Developers on board. The page title was (or currently is through some SEO trickery) "Build Link into your app" not "Link is awesome; Upgrade to Live 9.5 now!" or whatever.

I'm sure they'll find a way, right before they steal it.

Actually, it's Ableton and not some small developer, so they'll probably just break it.

It's highly unlikely that Apple breaks networking entirely so I'm not worried about that.

  • It was a nice surprised when they showed Loopy up there on stage before Gadget even, this is going to be really cool once more developers get onboard.

    We never know :)

  • So,but what about Sync if you just stay on ONE device? No Network between differnt devices (or PC) whatever Ableton (i don't even use Live) involving stuff.

  • YES, Sebastian, thx for the info, now i believe 2016 could be the year of iOS Sync ;-)

  • Let's all concerned gather up and start wording a petition to Marcos Alonso.

    I am in. +inf.

  • I wonder if this will work between two iPads?

Ableton's site says yes, ableton live does not need to be involved for this to work.

Yes, works fine, they demostrated Loopy and Gadget in sync on two ipads with nothing else.

  • This is most awesome. Looking forward to it.

Not related but also cool, is this: There's a new model of Push. Ableton will take your old one and donate it to education and give you a 30% discount on the new one (which, it has to be noted is more expensive than the old one).

    Nifty enterprise, that Ableton.

They got standing ovations for this at the Loop conference.

And yes, Ableton Link syncs two or more iPads/iPhones and multiple apps on the same device without the need for Ablton Live in the same setup. A desktop Pc/Mac running Ableton is optional.

  • OK, I'm missing something here. Audiobus is an audio app and doesn't have MIDI, so why would it need to sync?

    1. Audiobus doesn't have Midi yet.

    2. We're working on making the whole user experience better with Link for Audiobus users. That means no configuration for users at all. Even if they don't know what Link is, where to find its preferences pane in connected apps etc., everything will be synced with it.
It's like Background Audio already being turned on when you use Audiobus.
We're also going to show compatibility with Link in the compatible apps directory, you will be able to be notified of new Link enabled apps and you can filter for that and see the link status in Audiobus.

  • @sebastian - Thanks for clarification. Sounds great!

  • good news for iOS, will be interesting to compare to wired syncing using iconnects which already have good syncing ability but definitely looks better than Wist. I wonder if there are any advantages to using this over wired syncing other than no wires?.....well I guess cheaper than buying an iconnect.

The annoying thing with Wist is that you can't just sync different wist apps on the same device, is that the same here?

  • It behaves differently than regular Midi sync. Apps don't automatically start playing just because some other midi master app has started to play. Every app is equally able to change the tempo and everything is in Sync but you can decide when to start or to stop any individual app so you can bring them in whenever you feel like it. It feels like an actual band where every member interacts with the other members, without anyone dictating the performance.

Could solve many live use problems while gigging with multiple iPads. Multiple iPad live rig is the future in my mind. I always perceive sync and lack of iPad ports as major stumbling blocks.

It all sounds very promising. Just the fact it seems to need a wifi network for it to work looks like a bit of a problem for certain live situations with only iOS devices.

Exactly my thoughts. Of course there are portable WiFi hubs out there. I presume when WiFi signal is lost the apps will keep ticking together for a bit. They must have considered Bluetooth but I presume the bandwidth wasn't broad enough for what they're wanting to do.

  • Why can't they do it straight from Lightning USB cable directly. That way minimum lag.
