I really like the idea of no master
Unless I'm jamming with my 5y.o. daughter then I'd rather be the master or she'd be messing with the tempo for the hell of it.

Exactly, the choice is down to ALL of the players to use or abuse the tempo change !

I can see the v1.1 requests already, Can we have a 'mute tempo change from certain nodes' option please :)

  • I hope people that use this technology in a live setup, will secure the wifi network, otherwise I can imagine having fun speeding up or slowing down a few performances just by having a compatible app on my iPhone ;)

Should make for fun in the classroom.

I assume there will be an option at some point to lock the tempo control with one machine or disable a troublemaker's ability to affect it. In the meantime, we can all have fun trying to break the Link. They must have been doing that in the Ableton office!

I do like that it's all just planned to work with minimal setup. Maybe there will be more advanced options available too, but just starting a jam looks super simple, which is great.

This makes setups very flexible play something on device 1 join the session with device 2 change app in device 1 ... O la la, baby

Hopefully it's like WIST where you can accept or deny a request to join. That'd be silly if they didn't in the name of ease-of-use.

  • Anyone know when this will be avaliable?

I thought tempo changes (beyond half-time Skrillex breaks and the obligatory double-time following the Dropping of The Bass, neither of which really counts) were passé. It's curious to see so much interest. I mean, I know I'm interested in being able to create seamless tempo changes whenever I want, but then, I know I'm passé.

I must reassess the current state of music. Again. Great thread :)

  • I always used to like Zappa music that would just change tempo as he conducted the band.

  • I liked the explanation in that Loop video, with the presenter likening it to live bands keeping in sync.

Agreed. Zappa's band, rotating memberships and all, was possibly the most talented rock band ever, pound for pound. I mean, he scored his songs and you had to be able to sight read the music - miles away from reminding a guitarist that on that one part, it's DAN-DAN-DA-DA-DA-DA, not DAN-DA-DA-DA-DA-DA-DA (said without irony in one's best mouth guitar voice ;)

I always grin when someone like Sting or Lemmy (or even myself) talks about writing a song, compared to Frank, who actually put pen to paper for amazing, off the wall bits like the xylophone intro to "St. Alphonso's ..."

If your doing a live set, tempo changes are pretty normal. Even if it's only 5-10bpm either way between tracks.

What are the maximum number of devices that can join the Link session? I could see cool things happening if you purposely allow a crowd full of people with phones to join your performance.

  • Omg! Now this is getting me so wet just thinking about all the fun to be had! 3some boys?

  • Now if only they could get Link to work through online discussion groups.

  • Here's a question- if Link is being used to sync apps on a single device, is wifi necessary??

bump - interested in knowing the answer to this too

  • Me, too. Is that possible?

I really have to thank Ableton for this. I'm curious what brought this about from them, even after watching the announcement video.

@AQ808 - I wonder if it was maybe a tool they'd already developed (maybe it's an extension of software that links Live and Push) that they realized would be useful beyond their original plans. It's potentially pretty clever marketing IMO. If this free tool ends up improving the workflow of many musicians, what great advertising for Ableton that would be.

If it only helps you link multiple hardware devices however and doesn't help you sync multiple apps on a single device, that doesn't solve the big MIDI sync problem on IOS.
