Richard, trust me, you really don't want to concentrate on those vocals
Or Chuck Berry's preferred after dinner cocktail...
Season's greetings!
You are absolutely right; it was a lot of fun
Thank u sir!
Late to the party, this month has been busy. I finished this up at the beginning of the month and wanted to contribute something else, but haven't had the time. It's another iOS/OSX hybrid track: if you listen closely I think you can hear the click track from GarageBand iOS bouncing around on the acoustic guitar track:
https://m.soundcloud.com/bvsmv/the-lights-go-passing-by
GarageBand iOS on iPhone, main melody was Xynthesizer, iMaschine for drums, GarageBand pads and bass, ikaosillator for some flourishes, and some acoustic and electric guitar.
Comments are coming as usual. Happy thanksgiving for all of you in the states.
Late as usual.
@BvsMV really sweet. Great vibe and mix. Love the guitars!
@rkmonkey I like it. It is a bit rough and ready but that is part of the charm. It's like a blend of Chuck Berry and 60s garage rock
@BvsMV Beautiful. One minute I was sat on my sofa pressing play, the next I sprouted white wings & gently flew off. I landed softly on a perch way above London Town. As I peered downwards, time sped up & a whole 24 hours was crammed into the three & a half minutes of your very well constructed & played tune.
The blurred car headlights from thousands of commuters were like a colony of ants, nipping in & out of streets going on their journeys to find something new to investigate. Your song was the only sound I heard amongst the chaos, hustle & bustle of daily City life.
As long as your tune was on repeat, it would remain that way. Thanks for the break sir.
@rkmonkey oh yeah! Nice bit of ruck n roll to delight the masses. Your guitaring is marvellous & certainly dirty enough to satisfy my distortion loving lug 'oles. Catchy song with a great riff that propels your track along to one of those endings that I love. Kerrunch!
Well done on singing those high, ball splitting notes without a murmur of hesitation from your voice. I get the reference to Chuck Berry & garage bands that @AlterEgo_UK commented on. I'd like to add a third component to that list if I may. Any of the "pub rock" bands from the mid 70's. Good ol' barn stormin' rock with a pint of Forest Brown Ale for company. Can I have a chaser as well please!!
@BvsMV Good driving beat with dreamy electronic sounds. Nice for listening to on a bus when it is dark and rainy outside or just generally watching the world go by
Thanks man. A bit simple and rough indeed.
Thanks. Glad to get on the board for the month.
@rkmonkey a nice rough and ready blues, a lot of energy and variation in the track. Some nice guitar playing.
I think that maybe the vocals are mixed a little too high, and also the vocals would probably benefit from being practiced more before you do the recording - I know from my own experience that if I sing the song through as many times as possible before recording the vocals the results are much better. So now I've taken to practicing the song with an acoustic guitar several times a day for a couple of weeks before laying down the vocal track. It just takes time for the pitch to settle, especially with new material. You can clearly sing, so I think a little more practice would really lift your voice and give much better results.
Thanks for the feedback and advice. SOTM has me, at least, thinking about songs and ideas. They are early and rough versions for sure. Thanks again for starting this thread and the encouragement.
Thanks! That was definitely the vibe I was going for the title came as I was listening to a mix really early going to work.
Wow! I really appreciate that. I work in a downtown area, which is pretty mild, but you can get a nice view from the freeway. That's totally what I was envisioning with this track. Glad you liked it.
Thank you! My guitar playing leaves much to be desired, so I appreciate that!
@BvsMV sorry I seemed to have missed your track, just caught it now. It's a nice piece of downtempo elecronica, I like the guitar when it comes is, it gives a nice contrast with the other elements. I also like the fact that the guitar is more textural than musical, it's cool. It's a pretty subtle piece, but with lots of elements and textures.
@Bluepunk Hey man,Sooo...the "difficult second album" or single in this case.Well it's another great entry imo.Nice work with the vocal levels mate.I love the lyrics.Cheery as always!!;) like a musical Care Bear!!:D the breakdown was good and the drums were excellent.Keep up the good work man.
@BvsMV Hey man,a nice subtle chill out track.I really like your stuff. My only critique would be that I found some of the squeaky bits especially in the first minute quite jarring/distracting and it did for me kill some of the chill.Otherwise another great effort mate:)
@rkmonkey hey man, cool song, good lyrics,GREAT guitar playing, nice melody, but the vocals a bit too loud on this one and I felt the drums were a bit too quiet.
If you just enjoy writing songs and getting them out here then of course that's fine and you're doing a great job of it mate:) but if you're interested in "polishing" your songs a bit more then may I suggest spending a bit more time attacking the mix.(I still have loads to learn on this) I just feel that a few little tweaks here and there would really take your songs to another level.I have found http://therecordingrevolution.com really useful for loads of free mixing tips.
Keep 'em comin man!:D
@LostBoy85 thanks as always. I appreciate the guidance and suggestions. I am forcing a bit just to get something out and do want to work on the polish part at some point. Will check out the link.
@BvsMV I feared that @bluepunk's hyper-lyrical review (nicely done Mister Punk) had my expectations set unreasonably high, especially as I am a tremendous tart for a good dose of mellow wist, but no, lovely stuff. Always interested in drums/beats in ambient-ish work, as I find that tricky to figure myself, but you do an excellent job here. Just enough, not too much. I can almost hear this as a long outro to some unwritten late-period Police tune. Keep up the work etc.
Vocals down and drums up. Sits a little better. Updated in original post above.
You, sir, were born a slight sliver out of your time.
Loved the terracotta pot to Royal Doulton culture list. Great lyrics, put me in mind of JC Clarke, but, you know, so fucking what?
Also liked the middle piece that floated off (relatively). Can't give the whole thing higher praise than it had me drifting back to Catford (which I'm absolutely certain isn't the same now as it was then, or maybe it is, surely not everywhere in London has been gentrified...).
Catford's still a dump.
Well I was going to post a submission for this month (in the same month as the thread title!) but soundcloud appear to have fooked their iOS login again.
Oh well, lucky escape for you.
There's still a couple of days to go - you can't get out of it that easily...
Ha ha! I can see the excuses won't always wash.
Must admit I am a bit more reticent with this one.
That's probably a good sign. I've found the ones I'm least sure of go down better than the ones I'm pleased with. Or I might just be saying that to persuade you to post it.
