  • @Bluepunk and @JohnnyGoodyear thanks for the comments. The Glock sound is actually two sounds from Gadget's Chaing Mai synth played together. There is a Glockenspiel (sampled) though, in the first chorus, it's just playing down the A minor scale and washed in lots of delay, it's more textural than musical.

The list of apps and instruments is pretty long, the initial ideas started from some droney guitar riffs which I then translated into various synths in Gadget, but I did also keep a few guitars in there. The panting dog is from Poseidon (which also provided a few other sounds and textures), there's also some iSem for those big bass pads, some Alchemy, and the seagulls (not buzzards) are a sample grabbed from the internet.

Rather than menace I would probably have been happier if it was more ethereal, but I don't have Liz Fraser's voice :)

As I said in my initial post, I don't think the underlying song is really all that good, but the germ of an idea has come to me from doing this tune: in my artwork I try and create imaginary worlds, and this kind of textural/soundscapey approach might allow me to create musical worlds as well as visual ones. It's an interesting idea that deserves further exploration. I don't think the execution this time around is quite good enough, but that's usually the case with a first attempt.

  • @richardyot understand fully giving oneself permission to wander off into new things, to try, to fail, to fly etc., my extra note here is to add another nod to the lyrics. Liked the slightly more surreal/poetic caste etc.

  • @richardyot Thanks for letting me know re instruments & apps used. I remember you saying last month that you were getting into those pads & the bass is proof that you are making them sound really good. I'm still to get into the world of synths, samples & gadget & by hearing these played/used in actual songs, will wet my appetite/creative possibilities even more.

Through your music & art, please promote your imaginary worlds even more. I would take a guess that the worlds you create in both sound & vision are a lot more loving than the current one we live in now. Cheers!

    @richardyot,

Lots of potential with this one, the intro works very well as does the the clean rhythm guitar parts (and the seagulls !)

On the downside, it's somewhat disjointed structurally (now you may think thats a bit rich coming for me, but there you go ), the bass synth sweep isn't a substitute for a bass line, in my view and is strangely atonal. There's a a particular 'hole' in the bass area in the chorus parts.

The double tracked vocals detract for me, which is a shame as the lyrics are pretty interesting.
I do think there is a lot of potential in the track nonetheless.

  • @Igneous1 thanks for the feedback, and I do admit that it was difficult to stitch the various bits of the song together, so I can totally see how it could sound disjointed, especially coming out of the second chorus (which is the bit that was the hardest to pull off).

@JohnnyGoodyear thanks for the comment on the lyrics.

  • @Richardyot Hey man,So you've been in the lab experimenting eh?:) I like the lyrics, very weird and I commend you for creating an interesting kind of vibe/visual with them.I thought the beginning was cool.It sounded like scribbles with a pencil to me:) and the glock melody was nice.you did indeed paint a picture with the music.
As with most experiments there's always good and not so good but knowing you I'm sure you're aware of what you gained most out of this one and will use as a building block for future endeavours.

I like your idea of creating imaginary worlds with music and I look forward to hearing you do this.

Ps.4 mins and 12 seconds? That's a record for you mate I think:)

If you mean it's a lot shorter than my usual then you're right. No instrumental outro you see...

  • No ukelele either mate....:D

    ....aaargh, disqualified!

Still time left before the end of the month to add a ukulele solo as a musical outro....

  • @Richardyot nice job man. I appreciate your commitment to recording and trying new directions, gives much to explore.

Ok, I'll admit right off that I'm cheating slightly... This was a song of the month but it was a month about 7 years ago. Never saw the light of day though. My shutterwax partner Jeff wrote this song to test out his korg digital studio that he had just purchased. I liked it and we redid his original recording until we arrived at this. I'm playing bass, (on his 70's Ibanez artist bass that weighs 13 pounds) and I engineered and co-produced, everything else is Jeff.

The title and lyrics came from Jeff googling the first two words he thought of, in this case "greyer than."

That led to an article from the NY Daily News in 1984, which I can't find now, about a guy walking down the street in NYC and having grey drops land on his suit. He thought it was acid rain, turns out it was cement from a construction site high up on a building. His only thought..."who's going to pay to clean my suit."

So I always liked it, it was mixed about 2 weeks ago on a certain app that can't yet be named but is quite fun to use... ;-)

Don't take it too seriously, but enjoy!

  • @Matt_Fletcher_2000 that track is beautiful! @LostBoy85, very cool, hit me up for uke bass! (And uke doesn't have to be harsh, we used it on my favorite song from our first album).

I'll listen to more tomorrow, it's 1am, time to sleep!

  • I lied, listened to one more, who needs sleep anyway? @richardyot , awesome track. Very creepy and trippy, love those low synth sweeps. The mix was great too. I could hear that behind a desert scene in a movie when the character is lost and the picture gets a little hazy. I dying know if I really know what I mean! But I really enjoyed it.

  • Hello. Done in a day - 5 live instances of iSem AU plus a soundfont and iElectribe samples in MTS. Bit rough and ready, no mastering or EQing to speak of. Thoughts appreciated...

  • I give you my word that I will provide comments for all submissions at the end of the month. Promise.

This month's song is rather unlike most of my work. However, Santa Claus functions as an outlet for my shirtless-teenage-dirtbag-stoner alter-ego(s) :)

Rock Drum Machine 2 , Rhythm Studio's TB-3, ThumbJam, ToneStack, lots of Squashit and Muckraker...Hail Santa!

@JeffChasteen I IMMEDIATELY started singing the words to 'Anarchy in the UK' to this one. Yes, a lot slower and more Xmal Deutschland maybe....

Right now ha, ha, ha, ha, ha
    I am an anti-Christ
    I am an anarchist,
    Don't know what I want
But I know how to get it
I want to destroy the passerby
'Cause I want to be anarchy,
    No dogs body

Hafta say that I have been listening to a fair amount of whatever-this-style is called in the past few weeks. I went through a major Sisters of Mercy year once upon a time and have been thinking about how something like them crossed with Au4 would sound. This is maybe a little too hard/chewy for my taste but I do love the title :)

Don't know exactly why but there was something about this reminded me of a Steely Dan outtake crossed with someone else I can't put my calloused finger on.

Of course I'm guessing that the unnamed object of your mixing was A/Pro and I kinda wish I didn't make that leap because of course all I was mostly doing on first listen was trying to parse the machinery not the tune... :)

I also appreciate your explanation of the backstory, but can't help but wonder what I would have arrived at without your nod in the right direction etc...

Thanks. I saw Mr. Lydon and current company play just a couple of weeks ago; he still has it.

  • @JohnnyGoodyear I can't confirm or deny what I used... But I will say iOS was not used in the creation at all but the mixing was all iOS. I pulled this song out because I needed a multi track I hadn't mixed before and I had forgotten about this one.

What would you have come up with as a backstory? I'm interested! Jeff would be very pleased to know someone picked up steely Dan in his music, one of his favorites. I'm not a big fan of them but if it works it works!

  • @JeffChasteen finally feeling the holiday spirit. My kind for sure

Done in a day. You are locked in. You must be feeling it (whatever it is). Great Intro to AU! iSEM is one of the best.

    Season's Greetings!

  • @mrufino1 certain app on 7 year old project. Cool. Beatlesque in some parts...

  • @mrufino1 I like the psychedelic vibe of the song, has a 60s feel, and also shades of more recent bands like maybe the Apples in Stereo (I've never listened to Steely Dan so I wouldn't be able to pick up on that one). Also like the (Beatles-esque as as already been pointed out) laaa-laaas

Not sure about the lyrics though....

@JeffChasteen an unusual Christmas song, and maybe it's because Johnny already mentioned the Sisters of Mercy but the opening bars did make me think of "Floorshow". Once the vocal comes in it doesn't really sound like them any more though, definitely its own thing.

Personally I would prefer it if the lead guitar had more of a call-and-response feel rather than playing constantly - it distracts from the vocals and also lacks dynamics and contrast when played all the way through. If it was played at the end of the vocal lines I imagine it would work much better, and also allow us to concentrate on the vocals more.

  • @Matt_Fletcher_2000 another nice understated downtempo track, this is definitely a very promising direction for you IMO, I find it much more enjoyable to listen to than the D&B. I think what's really good here is the subtlety of it all, nothing in your face or dramatic, you have to tease out the good stuff from repeated listens, which gives the tracks room to grow on you.

I like the way the beat drives the dynamics, and the understated melody.

    Matt, what he said.

  • I'll catch up commenting on the tracks I've missed later, but thought I'd get my latest dirge in first. Not up to my usual bad trip standards, but I'm running out of time this month and the track I was going to submit is still half finished, so this bit of abstract noise I created a couple of days ago will do as a placeholder. I like to give a list of the apps used with my tracks, but pretty much everything's been thrown into this one so I've lost track. I might get the other one finished, but until then:

You and your damn soppy ballads. That critique to one side...

This is a digital souk. Some global marketplace of uncertainty and an anthem to the covert. Theme tune to a decade. I know, perhaps binge-watching Homeland while reading Primo Levi will do this to a boy, but this piece is both disquieting and utterly somehow familiar to me. I like it.

Thanks boss, maybe the current World state of madness and chaos has sneaked in as an influence - my plans for a toe-tapping ballad will have to wait another month....
