    @monzo I like this one, I found it strangely accessible. Firstly there is a distinct arc, and sense of journey in the structure, so you feel the flow of the piece. Secondly, although there were some unpleasant and grating sounds in there, there were also many that were evocative.

    I particularly like the intro, with the elephantine scream, it sets the tone quite nicely, and then the echoey sound creates an atmosphere. It would be interesting to see some visuals to go along with this.

    The more sinister sounds in the middle section are harder to listen to, but then the ending takes you back to something less disturbing, in fact rather peaceful.

    Thanks Richard - funnily enough I thought this was less accessible than the previous ones! I think the grating sounds in the middle are a mixture of a distorted SeekBeats rhythm, a weird Poseidon patch and some Cyclop squeaks. The more peaceful ending is a sitar sample played through Fieldscaper with a bit of vocal chatter. The main rhythm, which is almost completely buried under overdubs, was a big batch of apps, including Patterning and Poseidon, powered by Fugue Machine - recorded live.

    Is that a trombone in your pocket Monzo or are you just pleased to see me?

  • @monzo sweet. Lunatic fringe, I know we're out here...

  • @JeffChasteen Angry, violent, distorted. Mmmm very nice. On first listen I wasn't sure about the lead guitar going all the way through your song but after a few more ear splitting plays, I got it & enjoyed it immensely.

    I love the mix you finished with. It's like the drums were recorded in a cold, wet outside WC of the studio whilst the remainder had the luxury of a heated room to strut their stuff. Excellent.

    Your growling vocals ensured that I was never confused by what you set out to achieve.
    Have some of THAT Santa..........& your reindeers! Great stuff.

  • @monzo You never disappoint. Marvellous title that made me want to listen to what delights you had on offer this month.

    I was welcomed by a warped horn that held my hand very tight to guide me through the squelchy, welly boot engulfing, septic mud bath. That it was infested by incredibly annoyed juvenile dragon flies, accentuated the trouble I was getting in. I didn't want to escape just yet but the distant voices were beckoning me to a safer place.

    A world of calmness opened up which teased me further until a tranquil resting place was found. Some fantastic journey that was! A meat based snack with an even amount of prime beef & teeth sticking gristle involved. Brilliant.

    Thanks! I was going for the fabled Bowie/Pop fucked-up Raw Power mix (complete w/ incessant and inappropriate guitar leads) and it seems that you got it. Santa Claus has you on the nice, not naughty, list!

    Aw what great comments - thank you! I really appreciate feedback like this, I pretend not to care what people think of my rubbish but I do really.

    @mrufino1 hey man,I really liked your track a lot actually.Great guitar riff,great bass ;) ,I like the singers voice and the vocal melody/arrangement,but my fave bit is the guitar riff!! I also like the vocal twist to fade out,reminds me of beach boys and generally older pop songs.i also like that lyrically it's a bit bonkers.just proves you can write a song about anything!
    Well done to you and Jeff!:)

    Oh,and thanks for commenting on my track,yeah the harshness comes from recording straight into the internal mic,however I bought me a mic today so....:)

  • @JeffChasteen hey dude,wow! Yeah this is a wild one for sure:D its not my usual barrel of biscuits mate but I can tell you had fun with it.I struggled to pick out what was being said and I think Richards right about the dynamics with the guitar (though I'm a fine one to talk)
    I think it's always fun to try stuff you wouldn't normally do...haha! I would call this song the
    Anti-Christ...mas!!:D :smiley:

  • @monzo I get Johnnys Homeland reference,it sounded like it would go well on that type of show.Yeah,not as mad as some of your other stuff for me mate.Its great that you've made an omelette out of sooo many apps.I think most of us have shit loads that we don't use and i always feel good if I can use something/anything from any of them.Then I feel I'm getting something for my money at least:D well at least your halfway through next months song now eh?:)

  • @Matt_Fletcher_2000 Well done dude,polishing up on your live act huh??:) I felt like I was floating in space to this one.Its great that your adding strings to your bow mate.Keep up the great work!

    Thanks for the comments - yeah I do like to get my money's worth - so I try and make use of as many as I can! Cyclop made a rare appearance. Just have some final tweaks for the other track, so that's next months SOTM sorted!

  • Another punk tune for this month ( Just ) Ideally I would have liked an intro but this mess is long enough. Sopping wet flags and balloons are hanging from the front door, to celebrate me managing a few more chords and using the bottom two strings of guitarism for the first time. Look out Billy Duffy.

    Apps used: Guitarism, Slash amp, ifretless bass & Finger banging AM drums in Cubasis

  • Another great track. Somehow complex and understated at the same time. Great vibe and melody. On my third listen. Very professional sound.

  • @Bluepunk another lovely festive tune full of the Christmas spirit, there's just too much love going round these parts lately :)

    It's a solid progression from last month, the vocals are mixed just right, you can hear them without them overpowering the music, and both the vocals and drums are excellent. Good to see you stretch your wings with the musical content too, look forward to a guitar solo next time :)

    One thing that does occur to me is that sticking to the punk genre too tightly might make your output sound a bit repetitive - I think you should consider being a little more adventurous and innovative musically - you can still keep the witty and spiteful lyrics, and the bile and anger, but maybe make the music a little less cookie-cutter.

  • @Bluepunk another great track. You got a sound going now.... Works for me.... Big fan here.

    I always sort of wish my mother had said this to me when young...

    Good work Mister Punk. Feels like you are quickly mastering the machinery/getting the balance etc. Nothing wrong with writing a thousand of these, but I agree with Richard as regards taking it further; not because you should (what is that anyway?), but because working out on other things broadens your skillset (all a bit Dilbert, but I'm sure you know what I mean).

    Here's goes then.

    (Your first track) Love the angelic/harmonic sounds that come in after 0.30, very nice, and very much my cup of tea. After about 1.20 it seems to drift a bit until picking up again a minute later. Very melodic, great rhythm and production as always, but feel that middle section minute needs something extra. Love those lead sounds though.

    This forum has been a lot of help to me recently, so I guess I should throw my hat in the ring here for the first time...

    Great to hear some politics in a SOTM tune - great late 80's/early 90's synth octave stuff going on too. Could sound more deranged IMHO...great tune, and love the synth work. Clean and crisp.

    @gburks said:
    Coincidentally, I performed it on ukulele, so I think this qualifies for the ukulele walkman challenge :)

    Sorry to hear of your loss - lost my dad to cancer too a long time back. Great track, reminded me of They Might Be Giants for some reason...great to see a video too. And real instruments.

    Starting a side project called "Infinity Flames", geared toward a harder, moodier sound yet retaining some atmospheres. Drawing from my original influences from Detroit and euro techno from back in the day

    Nice techno track, strong beats and a sci-fi edge to it - good driving music and tight sounds. Accomplished.

    @NoiseHorse said:
    Okay, here's a quickly thrown together mindless piece. Used Patterning and Fugue Mahine and other stuff. No singing, no melody, no destination, just jamming I guess.

    I like a good jam, in fact nearly all of my stuff on here starts out that way. Has a nice vibe and atmosphere, uplifting and breezy, would get my washing dry in no time. Could probably benefit from a bit of breathing space in the middle, but then jams are all about capturing the moment.

    Here's my entry for this month. As usual, created entirely in Gadget, mastered on the desktop - Har-bal, FLStudio, Loudmax etc.

    Strong rhythm underpinning an otherwise unpredictable melody line. Nicely produced - yeah I'd e happy to have this on while I'm working...

    @richardyot said:
    My entry for this month. It's more experimental than usual, and although I don't think it's necessarily all that successful there's some ideas in there that I might develop more in the future. I don't think it's a great song, but it has been a good way to play with some new ideas.

    I'm not as struck on this one as your previous songs, which tend to remind me of the Canterbury scene songsters (Kevin Ayers, Robert Wyatt etc.). I'll always applaud experimentation, but I'm a bit put off by the vocals - I know you don't mind a bit of constructive criticism so I'm sure you'll take this as honest feedback. The recording and playing itself though is top notch, just the vocal tune not quite to my taste.

    @mrufino1 said:
    Ok, I'll admit right off that I'm cheating slightly... This was a song of the month but it was a month about 7 years ago. Never saw the light of day though. My shutterwax partner Jeff wrote this song to test out his korg digital studio that he had just purchased. I liked it and we redid his original recording until we arrived at this. I'm playing bass, (on his 70's Ibanez artist bass that weighs 13 pounds) and I engineered and co-produced, everything else is Jeff.

    Made me think of Frank Zappa for some reason - could be the lyrics, and They Might Be Giants again for the vocals. Good bass playing!

    I give you my word that I will provide comments for all submissions at the end of the month. Promise.

    Oh yeah, demonic gut sounds to make my liver tremble. Difficult to pull this sort of thing off (I know I've tried) but this has got several balls, and hair where it shouldn't grow.

    Cracking stuff, and more complex than previous entries. I like it, bringing Crass more to mind thatn Inner City Unity (though the guitars have an ICU feel). Do you listen to much Sleaford Mods?

  • @Bluepunk Another great piece of Punk! Love the sneering vocals and the drums are very well done. What did you use for them? The guitar sounds a bit synthetic. Is that an app and a real guitar or just an app? Sounds good though for the power chords.

  • @crystal20 I'm not sure if your kind comments were meant for me & if they were...thank you very much. The melody remark makes me think they weren't haha. I'm not too good at those yet!

    @richardyot Thanks & yes I hear an improvement from song number 1. After listening to all of yours & others advice from last month it has helped me to understand what I should be doing to correct/improve all aspects of the creative process. Not sure about a solo just yet but that's what I dream of achieving. I'm chuffed that Guitarism lets me me do that squeaky thing, like a REAL guitarist. Little things........

    @rkmonkey Well, thank you kindly for saying those things. "You got a sound going now" & "I'm a big fan" really spurs me on to keep working hard at getting the best from my limited musical knowledge. I'm ok (I think) with the drums, it's the music that I need to concentrate on. The only fan(s) I've ever had are my dogs who have to endure me practicing my shouting vocals whilst on their walkies. Because they're named Sid n Nancy helps!

    @JohnnyGoodyear Thank you. I'm hoping that with time & experience I will broaden my musical horizons & enjoy writing some different styles. I'm still struggling with this note, chord, minor etc thing & am confused with some piano & guitar notes not being the same? I'm getting there, slowly, but if I take the theory part away, I absolutely love doing this. Maybe try a synth soon. The Prodigy style stuff may be an option to explore.

    @monzo Many thanks. Like you mentioned yesterday, it's a great feeling when someone else listens to your stuff, let alone enjoy it! Ah Crass. What happened to them? So much decent punk around back then. I listened to The Seaford Mods after a comment from last months club entry. I hadn't before & after they appeared on Jules Holland I have since explored their tunes. I think the best UK punk band out at the mo is Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes. Now, he's got a voice I'd like to borrow!

    @AlterEgo_UK Thanks for the compliments on the tub thumping. I used the

  • @AlterEgo_UK Sorry pressed wrong button.

    Snare x 2 tracks. Problematic & Willow Crest kits
    Bass x 2 tracks. Naive & LA Red kits
    Hi hat/Crash ride. LA Red & Smear kits
    Crash. Alive kit.

    I play them by using the pads. My favourite bit.

    I used Guitarism with the Slash Amplitude amp. I'm learning to knock out a few chords more each week as I'm a non player. Great fun. I noticed there was a Power Chord setting on Guitarism but I haven't used them on purpose as I don't understand the difference yet. Maybe I pressed the wrong button as I just did on this. Thanks again.

    @Bluepunk a power chord is a chord played without the 3rd. So normally a chord is comprised of 3 notes: the root, the third, and the fifth note in the scale. Depending on the chord, the third can be either a major or a minor, the minor being a semi tone lower in the scale (so the interval between the root and the minor third is a semi tone less than it is in a major chord).

    So a power chord on a guitar just comprises of the root, the fifth, and then the root again an octave higher, it only uses 3 strings and has two advantages: it's really easy to play (much easier than a bar chord which requires you to fret all 6 strings) and it has a meaty sound, which without the third is neither major nor minor.

    Lots of rock songs are played entirely with power chords, for example "Smoke on the Water" and "Smells Like Teen Spirit".
