I like this a lot. Would (of course) like some strangely foreboding vocal samples/interstellar radio messages in the background. Could easily be a theme that was foolishly left off 'Their Satanic Majesties...' etc.
Lol @aaronpc. Yah, it's a bit of tough one to slot. And I need to do something much more uptempo next, everything has been a bit slow lately.
Definitely Casual. Something about the Soundcloud playlist confused me, as I hadn't heard the other one yet. Suplica is a nice change of pace for you. You have a very clear and clean sound, which is perfectly valid, but I likes my grit. Suplica, while still not too gritty, has enough grind to make up for it with me. Sounds like something you might play at the start of a first encore. One thing I can mention is that while I think the simple drum line works fine here, the closed hi hat following along slowly in time may be one too many. I might use something more swishy like a shaker/soft tambourine at double time (which still wouldn't all that fast) to pull the listener along. Nits. I may just be averse to hihats generally, always fighting them down in the mix.
Lol! Okay, @aaronpc. I'm, on the other hand, a fan of using and mixing hihats, albeit I like them not so seventies-loud in the mix (when mixing live drums, I almost null the close mic, leaving the hats mostly on the OHs).
Thank you for the review!
@theconnactic - Nervoso: Awesome! I totally dig this song, very well done! I especially love the transitions at 1:10 and 1:59
@Igneous1 - Port Royale: This sounds like a perfect video game track to me. It reminds me of Donkey Kong Country on Super Nintendo, which in my opinion is a complement because that game and soundtrack is awesome, great work!
@rickwaugh - Mixed Messages: This is hands down my absolute favorite song this month! I love how the song twists, turns, and leads me to the unknown, only craving more! Interestingly I thought it sounded like a track that'd fit perfectly in a Quentin Tarantino when I listened to it earlier this month and who do you think just won the Oscar for best original score? Mr. Morricone watch out, Rick's in town!
@orchardman - Sing With Me: Beautiful vocals and guitar! It's always a relaxing joy to listen to your work, thank you!
@DD829 - Beyond Reality: Far out man! Seriously, I really love this song. Impeccable sound quality, thank you!
@JeffChasteen - My Life of Forgery: Wow. This song is amazing! So ominous, mysterious, and random in all the best ways possible. Are those your vocals? I've liked this song on my SC and love it when it comes on, thank you so much!
@achromus - Oral Play: My cup of tea! I love the keys buried in the background around the 2 min mark and obviously when the song drops at 2:48. Excellent work!
@Reid - Trust The Silence: Wow, you've got some great wind pipes there! Seriously, you could've been in the Rat Pack! This work is incredible, the flute is a perfect touch. Forever in my permanent collection, thank you!
@richardyot - Distant Thunder: I really, really love this song too. The reverb on the vocals is spot on and the keys with the guitar at 2:12 is oh so tranquil. Love it!
@theconnactic - Suplica: This song is great! Totally has a Halloween/Thriller vibe to me. May I ask, what are you using for your bass? Are you tracking a guitar or using an app?
@RedSkyLullaby - Mike Vasas Living Room Floor (Remix): Awesome! My favorite part is at 1:33. Interesting work, thank you!
@crouchie - Strip: Brilliant work! I especially love the surrounding sound scape that circle around my brain!
@touchconspiracy - The Touch Conspiracy: I absolutely love your work! This song is so fun and pleasurable to listen to, thanks!
@badrico - Eyes Open: Woah, this song took me by surprise, I absolutely love it! I feel like you managed to blend several genres together in perfect harmony. This has to be one of the most original songs this month and it is one of my top picks. Thank you so much! (Perfect outro btw)
@DavidEnglish - Resonant Dreaming: Mr. English, thank you for such a mesmerizing, beautiful, piece. I love how it feels like the music is breathing. In and out. In and out. Such wonderful workmanship!
@hellquist - OffRoad: Dude, I totally love this song! I love when you hit the minor chords at 1:22-1:44 for example. Such an enjoyable sonic adventure to experience. Thank you!
@JohnnyGoodyear - Come On Down: Bowie reincarnated so soon?! And in Texas?! I really love this piece. The subtle strings are too perfect. The vocals are unique; so soulful and powerful yet as subtle as a whisper. It truly is wonderful and mesmerizing. Thank you for this true work of art!
@aaronpc - Mundane: From the first second to the last; bliss. Once again you've done it to me! I don't even know what to say, this music is perfection! Thank you!
@gburks - Sal's Dream: Wow, this is a solid song! I absolutely love this. I can totally hear this being on the radio! Nicely done sir!
@Marcel - Why Do we Always: Amazing. This entry took every turn I hoped it would. So eerie yet inspirational. Perfect length and space in my opinion. Thank you so much!
@kitejan - Keep Calm: Yes! I thought it was going to be very slow and ambient by the intro and pic. I'm so happy that you took the song in this direction! I absolutely love it!
Tx, @TGiG. I appreciate it. I often try to imagine my stuff as film music, and what it could sit behind.
Definitely my favourite of yours. Piano's lovely, backing beautiful in general, really sets a scene. I would prefer the vocal quieter so that the backing came through more, but hey, what do I know. Lovely though.
I really like that, little quirky melancholy tune and the vocal fits the style perfectly. That organ sound at 1.30 is a bit loud, but generally it all comes together really well. Clever lyrics although the vocal could be a little louder. Really like that breakdown at the end.
I really like that, and I think the mix is really good. The compression feels a little brutal in places but it does have a really nice tight feel. Vocal is really good and I like its level in the mix. Electric ukulele eh? Love it.
I like that melancholy/shoegaze/Cure vibe there. Would like to hear it with a more fleshed out vocal, but you're right, it does kind of work like it is.
Wish I could layer and texture like that. V impressive. Love that it's mainly from Nanostudio, great DAW that. Really impressed.
You sir, gawd bless you, are an enthusiast
Thank you Mister Crouch. You're probably right about the vox level. When it comes to the mix etc. I feel like a man without a mirror trying to cut his own hair. One of these days I may find a suitable salon....
Interesting and different. Like the Eastern feel to it, a bit disquieting and full of atmosphere. Wasn't too sure about it to start with but by the end wanted to go back and give it another listen so I feel it has depth. Nice one
Your mixes are naturally uncluttered and so it never sounds like you have to do much remedial work, which is a gift I reckon
Wow thank you, I never would compare the two but I do love the Stones!
Re: vocals, I did try some chanting stuff but even something that simple I still sounded like a tone deaf, pubescent, child off of his much needed medication.
Your analogy of your vocals to cutting hair without a mirror is brilliant! They say writing is the mirror of the mind. If that's the case, you must have difficulties and accuracy where I must be retarded.
** difficulties of accuracy**
Thanks @TGiG
@TGiG DISAPYRAMIDEVIL I like this, it has a nice "Thousand and One Nights" feel but I feel it needs to build more. If you don't think it's too much of a cliche, perhaps you could consider adding some eastern percussion, like maybe tablas.
@JohnnyGoodyear You have a great voice and I think this song is beautiful. I like the way the lyrics tell a story. For me, no explanation of the character or story was required. Your lyrics and the plaintive quality of your voice painted a very compelling picture.
The only comment I would make is that I would have liked to have heard one break in it to give it a little more musical variation. Maybe verse four could have a different melody?
I recognize that it is a song about a guy in a very dark, bleak place and you deliberately wanted to linger in that dark world he's in. But if it's also song about a guy who holds a vain hope that his life will get better, it might be good to have the song pick up the mood while he allows himself to dream. And then slap the lid back on his hopes in the last verse!
Just a thought. Great song.
I really like this. It's one of the most ambitious (and fun) songs I've heard on SOTMC. Quite often I feel that people pick one groove or mood and stick with it all the way though. You fill this with so many melodic and musical variations. Love the vocals.
You strike me as the kind of person who has a dozen good ideas faster than most people have one so it's hard to hold back. There's an album worth of creativity in this song. At the risk of sounding like a jerk this raises the question of whether your song would have a bigger impact on your listeners if you took some stuff out and left the best in. Not that I don't like everything, but some of it is extremely hooky and hooks gain power through repetition.
I'm not suggesting you change this song in any way because it's great. But maybe it's something you could experiment with with in your future work. I'm sure if I had your gift I wouldn't want to hold back.
Hey, @TGiG! Really nice song. Great intro! The harmonies of the verse sound almost like serial music. The fading transition to the eastern-sound theme is just perfect. Great arrangement, quite interesting.
Great February to all. After my New Years Day Kickoff I sunk into the sidelines. Fighting my way back in. Sees yous in the March forum.

@gburks - Sal's Dream: great tune. Great vocals. Dig it.
@Marcel - Why Do We Always: my kind of vibe. agree with Lostboy85. You could remind the boys what we like about RH.
@kitejan - Keep Calm calm before the.......... My brain.... I get it.
@TGiG - DISAPYRAMIDEVIL: way to tap in........
Sorry if I missed anyone
Thank you for the reviews, @rkmonkey!
Good effort @rkmonkey. I look forward (and expect and so on and so forth) to listen and review your next piece THIS MONTH Go to it!
@theconnactic Again with the excellent guitar playing. Very nice guitar tones. Little Bass Solo that sounds great. Very nice tune
@Igneous1 You got Gadget skills. This ones got a really catchy beawt/tune. All the synth sounds are great. Deff. gonna be spinning this one again. Very nice song.
@rickwaugh Love the acoustic sound in this song. Deff. Spanish sound/influence. Oooh, just got to the harmonics. Nice touch, well fitted. The drums are simple yet powerful, and fit in nicely. Great song........
@orchardman Beautiful song. Nice acoustic guitar, sweet vocals. Everything mixed nicely. Echoing vocals, harmonizing vocals are all sooo good. Great job!
More to listen to later. Sleep now.........
Thank you so much for the review, @High5denied. Which song did you review by the way?
Nervoso, if you have another one this month, I just haven't got to it yet. It looks like a long list of songs. I'm behind...........
@RedSkyLullaby
Wow I LOVE your track !!! Love the voice, production, everything except ONE MAJOR thing, the final quality sound...
It seems recorded from an old tape recorder or something, is it because it's a demo ? Really, no medium, high saturated, no bass, it's a shame for a final treatment for such a nice track !!!
Please make it clean !
Here's a little preview of my next track :
