  • @gburks Nicely put together track. Catchy harmonies and enough unexpected sound combos to not be too poppy.

  • @JohnnyGoodyear > Like this a lot. There's something in the first third especially that seems a bit woofly (technical term) in the mix, but the feel, the voices, words etc and overall vibe is very persuasive. It put me in mind very early on of Bowie circa Space Oddity / Hunky Dory.

Thanks, JG. High praise indeed. A big part of my reworking this song is to bring its fidelity up to par with my more recent work, so I know what you mean about the wooflifulness. I won't be bothering with this on many of my older tracks, but I've always been partial to this one, so I'll tweak the EQ and compression a bit more.

Nice: I have a weakness for the I - V7/VI - IV - IVm chord progression you use in the chorus, although I'm yet to write a song using this progression. Some of my favourite songs use it, Radiohead's Creep being one of them. Simple, but not dull, and very effective. Liked the percussive bass sound in the beginning and after the chorus: I'd suggest some low pass filtering in this so it at times doesn't fight with the kick for space in the mix. Also liked very much the harmonized vocals. Funny outro, very psychedelic. Great song, @aaronpc: congrats!

You give me too much credit. I'm just a blind squirrel looking for a nut. But if I'd only kept up with my piano lessons I might know some music/song theory. Every time I try to learn that stuff now I just start noodling in a new direction and making a song instead.

It's funny you should mention Radiohead. I believe that bit of sampled psychosis there at the end was made with an old mac freeware that Radiohead used quite a bit on OK Computer. You loaded in a sample and it crunched the grains for hours and gave you back a huge sound file to pick through. Panning for sonic gold.

I'll try your suggestion on the low pass filter. I always have trouble carving the bass signal out of the mud, and should spend more time learning how that stuff works.

That's some very tasty melancholy, Like the kind of grey sky that makes a young fella feel like an invisible hero. I get a real kick out of that bass .. A little chubby optimism with some stubborn sass underneath it all. The meltdown conclusion is a hoot...like a vhs teenage diary melting in dumpster flames.

Thanks, @badrico Love your metaphors. The next time I'm stuck lyrically, I'm going to call you up. I get the feeling you could describe a ham sandwich and it would be worthy of setting to music.

  • Made this last friday. The singing is a bit....unclear regarding lyrics. I was searching for a melody, and found one, but hadn't wrote a lyric yet. I probably leave it this way. I kind of like it as it is now.

  • @orchardman - beautiful! Excellent vocals!!!

@hellquist - not completely my kind of music, but nevertheless: good athmosphere! Good production. Nice layers. And I like the overall energy. Good choices in the ending section.

  • Just dropping in quickly to say 'ello to my old pal @Marcel!! He's back people!! :) now nobody scare him off ok?!! Hey Marcel,Great track,to me it sounded very radiohead.Yes,I couldn't figure out the lyrics (except for the title) for the life of me,but that's ok,the melody was in tune and haunting and beautiful.I also wanted one of your awesome solos in there, but that's just cos I'm greedy!! :D Anyway, welcome back mate! I'm taking the month off but il be back next month for sure.See y'all then!

Just some ideas I was experimenting with around a somewhat depressing theme.....

99% Nanostudio, with a little bit of that Fairlight app, and Audiobus to get things from A to B.

  • Hey, @Marcel: nice arp guitar, chord progression and melody. Highly reminescent of Nada Surf, one of my fav alternative bands - specially your voice. Nice job!

Nice atmospheric intro, @kitejan: very relaxing, and I was wondering where was the depressing character of the song until that frightening "stay calm" warning, from where the music acquires a darker mood. The transition worked to great effect and caught me completely off-guard, so congrats for that. Nice choice of tones, specially the drums.

  • @aaronpc I really like your work, it's interesting, intriguing, and unusual and it really draws me in. This song reminds me of Sparklehorse (who was one of my all-time favourites), because of the understated quality of the music and the lyrics as well to some extent. It's weird in all the right ways and has a mysterious vibe about it. Keep doing this please.

  • @gburks Love the intro riff (electric ukulele eh, that rocks), nice vocal doubling and harmonies, and the track grooves along nicely. It's a bit on the long side for me though, even though there are plenty of changes along the way I think the track could be edited down to be a bit shorter. There's some fun breakdowns, like the one just before the two-minute mark, and the singing is very good. The bass is the highlight for me though.

  • @Marcel welcome back! We've missed you around these parts :)

Another lovely melancholy song, with that fragile vocal, love the atmosphere. To my ears the drums are a bit thumpy (technical term as @JohnnyGoodyear would say) and don't really fit the vibe of the song - I think brushes would be so much better here, but I realise that it all depends on the app you're using, it used to be Rock Drum Machine as I recall.

I really like the floaty quality of the vocal melody, and actually this is one of those rare songs that could actually do with being a bit longer, it's over all too quickly, it could maybe have an instrumental outro or a coda of some sort.

Anyway, it's a welcome return - keep it up.

My track for the month... My first one since making the leap from Cubasis to Auria Pro.

Electric ukulele running through ToneStack, a few tracks of vocals with some juicy Auria Pro chorus and comp, and everything else in Gadget.

Welcome to the Auria camp a.k.a the Light Side Of The Force. :D

Nice tune! Great melody and choice of instruments (electric ukulele, how interesting!), good riffs and solo and mixed very balanced and tight. Honestly, it's difficult for me to pick something to highlight. Hats off!

  • @Marcel thanks for feedback on my track I'm glad you enjoyed it. Your song had a nice spookey vibe to it. I liked the haunting quality of the vocals.

  • @gburks nice funky track.

  • @JohnnyGoodyear great song. It just goes to show that that keeping the arrangement simple is often the best. Your vocal style reminded it me of a band from back in nineties called Sparklehorse.

  • @Igneous1 - Not my type of music but nevertheless enjoyed the ride. I liked the variations, basic theme, adding stuff, nicely layered, I guess you had fun in making this, i sense positivity which I like. I associated parts with Japan (the band from the 1970s and 80s).

  • @rickwaugh - Very good (sort of) charming clumsiness (meant in a positive way). I like it. Original stuff. At the same time not clumsy at all, to contradict myself. Weird feedback, but consistent with the character of this piece. It is a strange piece with character. Well done!

  • @Marcel, fair enough. I know what you mean. It's definitely an odd piece, and an odd mode.

  • @marcel, I like it. Some Seattle grunge in there. I wish there was a bit more variety in it, rhythmically and sonically. Mix is very good, though the vocals are indeed lost a bit.

  • @kitejan, supremely atmospheric. I think the water was a bit too overpowering, could be dialled back a touch. But other than that, the mix is excellent, and the piece mutates and changes enough to keep the energy going for me. I think you could have added a spoken voice at the end saying, "And when you see the flash, bend over, place your head firmly between your legs, and kiss your ass good-bye." Just to lighten it up. Thank you, I appreciate your comment. I've found the more miserable I'm feeling the simpler the arrangement gets :)

  • @richardyot - Great old vibe/atmosphere !! Great slide guitar is an important factor here. Nice piece!
I feel a bit sorry to say it, but I personally don't think the melody is very catchy. But sung well btw. Not bad, the melody, but could be more interesting in my opinion. The melody and the music are a bit one of the same thing, they follow each other. Perhaps - just a general idea about vocal melody in a song - it is a nice idea to not make a perfect fit, I mean: the instruments do one thing, the voice does a different thing (as opposed to: voice and instruments do sort of the same thing). Just a thought.
Honesty is important here, I don't like being a bit critical about the melody of your song, specially when I read that you paid special attention to it. But I know you appreciate honesty. And if you yourself like the melody, thats the main thing. I have read that for others it is catchy, so my opinion is of course very subjective.

  • @Marcel - no worries, thanks for the honesty. Vocal melodies are definitely the most elusive and mysterious aspect of creating music, and very much my focus these days. I wrote the melody before the music in this case, but I'm still pretty clumsy when it comes to harmonising a melody, it's all a learning process. The only criteria I can measure really is progress, and I know I am slowly making progress so I can be happy with that - the music I am making now is much better than it was a year ago, and hopefully I will be able to say the same thing again this time next year.

  • @kitejan Nice track, lovely intro, very chilled (maybe too chilled considering the subject matter), and the siren when it comes in sounds ominous. I really like a lot of the sounds in the track, but I'm less keen on the spoken voice - it's just something I've heard far too many times for it to be interesting any more, so in this case I really much prefer the music by itself, and the music is really good and I think the track could actually stand on its own without the sampled voice and probably be better for it.

    Thanks bunches, Richard. Will do.

  • I should review in a more systematic way: my comments about this month's songs are scattered all the way through the topic...

  • P.S.: but I reviewed all the songs, just found it out.

@DD829 - Excellent work!! Sounds very professional and non-iPad to me. Great Bandcamp page artwork/layout etc (whatever one calls it).

@JeffChasteen - A weird dream. A Soundtrack. A one chord progression ? :) Interesting mood. I like it. Good mix of the vocals! Better is perhaps a minute shorter.

@achromus - Nice layered theme. Just when I think : of bit of variation is welcome here, there it is. I like it. Nice theme with variations. Well done. Some voice would lift the whole thing.

@Reid - Your voice and singing is really good! I like the song! Nice atmosphere. Some sort of vocal chorus would be welcome. The flute at 2:17 is a very nice change, and really adds. As does the violin in the ending section. Great atmosphere/mood/vibe. Well done! Technical details: you probably heard it yourself - the click at the very start, and also when the voice sets in on second 36. Not a serious problem and no must to change that in my opinion. (personally I dislike tweaking after I think I have finished something). About the bass which starts at second 56, I would put that a bit louder in the mix. But thats subjective of course. And perhaps when I heard it louder, I might say: its too loud :)
