Song of the Month Club - February 2016
What is the Song of the Month Club?
It's a place where musicians come to give and receive feedback on their work. Anyone is welcome, whatever their level of ability.
The spirit of the club is to contribute: if you submit a song for others to comment on, you should also have the courtesy to listen to everyone else's contributions and give as much feedback as possible. Posting a track and not listening and commenting on others is not cool.
The purpose of feedback is to be honest. Essentially you should give your truthful impressions of the song, whether good or bad. Negative feedback, if done in the right spirit and with courtesy, is often the most useful and can help the artist to grow and improve.
All submissions are welcome, don't hesitate if you want to contribute. Instrumentals are very welcome, and songs with vocals are especially encouraged, so if you are thinking of experimenting with vocals this is a good place to get started.

Well, think I'm going to be the first!
This one is a fusion between funk and jazz with a heavy Brazilian accent. "Nervoso" means nervous, restive, on the edge. Enjoy the listening and have a most pleasant week!
Dimitri.
Nice, like the bass breakdown especially
Thank you, @RedSkyLullaby! All the best!
Yet another all Gadget effort, perhaps even more retro than usual
Nice, @Igneous1! Retro indeed: I actually prefer it to your last month entry, which was also good.
Well, dang, I thought I'd get in here first. This might be the last for a while for me, my production process is somewhat slow.
This one is acoustic guitar, bass, piano, drums, and GeoShred. I'm pretty happy with this. Wanted to try something in Locrian mode. Came out a bit Spanish, a bit Japanese, hence the title. Started on guitar, composition completed in notion, exported as midi to Auria Pro. Recorded guitars, bass, GeoShred and percussion live. Left piano as midi.
Also an excellent example of GeoShred being used for something melodic, with some feeling. It's just a killer app for me.
Very cool, @rickwaugh: this one went deeply into the world music realm. Intriguing and well performed theme. Congrats!
@theconnactic, great sounding tune. Production is perfect. Got that great fusion jump to it, and I love the touch of Brazil that comes through. No nits, no picks.
@Igneous1, brilliance. Really enjoyed how the piece varies all the way through, never gets dull. Great production/mix. One of these years, I'm going to have to do the Gadget thing and see what this other world looks like.
Thank you so much for the feedback, @rickwaugh!
@theconnactic nice bit of Latin Jazz, with (as ever) some excellent technical playing. I like the energy you've got going in the track, and the breakdowns are also very good, lots of fun to listen to.
Thank you very much, @richardyot!
@Igneous1 one fo your best ever entries I think, and to my ears much less retro than the previous 3 months! I really like the groove that powers it all along, the bassline, and all the various leads and pads that are played on top of it all. It's got just the right mix of repetition and variety to keep it interesting but anchored and some of the leads are very hooky.
@rickwaugh that's a very interesting piece, with quite a lot to like about it - I really like the intro riff because it's so damn weird (presumably because of the modal nature of the tune), and I like all the sounds and the dynamics of the overall track are great. My one criticism is that I really wish it would settle into a groove at some point, because the lack of groove means the track never really settles, and for me it takes quite a lot of enjoyment out of listening to it.
I think that with the changes, the dynamics and the wonderfully weird music (which I really love) there is actually quite a lot of potential for something very original and interesting there, but it just needs a little bit of that toe-tapping element in the rhythm instruments for it to really mesh with me.
Thanks @richardyot. I deliberately backed off on too much of a consistent percussive beat in this, because it seemed to suit it. A lot of my influence comes from classical music, and various forms of instrumental music, and often the variation and unsettled nature of the music is what keeps the interest up, at least for me. But I also know that my percussion work needs to be better, and I'm still not super happy with how it is - I'm just getting back into playing a lot of percussion after a couple of three decades without. So, it'll improve. That one alone was about 4 times trying different things before I finally went with something.
It's all slowly coming together. But most definitely, if there is a piece of my stuff I'm least happy with, it's that. It does have to drive the song.
So here is my one for this month, another joint effort between me and my wife. Big emphasis on the vocals this time and I have tried to take into account some of the feedback we got for last month's song. All the Guitars are Bias FX, Rock Drummer and one of the Arturia synths for the pads. Arranged, mixed and mastered in Logic with the vocals all done on the mac. I still haven't found a really great vocal app.
Nice tune, @orchardman, reminescent of Dido and The Corrs.
@orchardman, very nice. Great mix, great sounds. Her voice is just right in the mix. I was a bit worried at the start that you were going to repeat the same phrase over until the end of the tune, but then things flipped around in the middle very nicely. The song itself is lovely.
Hey, @DD829! Nice pop tune! Strong Madchester accent in this one, liked it! Congrats!
Good stuff. Not what I would put on to dance around the kitchen, but sounds accomplished and, after all, Carnival is all but upon us, so Brazil deserves a little love. Zica be damned!
I like this a lot, especially knowing you Gadgeted the thing. Seems to feel like funk and new wave at the same time and that's a great mix. Well mixed. Being me, I'd like some Alison Moyet (or Aretha) across this telling me a happy or heartbroken story.
Again, not my bag of patchouli, but I envy much of the production here and would like to put some of my own work through the process you've found/sorted out. I found the tune a little one-paced, but that might be a matter of genre as much as anything.
I find this piece quite operatic in a way, with a dash of stop-start medieval court music also. Quite expect early-period Mister Gabriel to dance across the stage with a story to tell. I fear that its progressive feel leaves me a little confused without a narrative to follow, but I fancy that might be as much the stop/start nature of the beast. Much to admire, and I suspect that some of my uncertainty is lack of lazy comfort; more a criticism of me than it Interested to know what @Jocphone has to add.
Thank you, @JohnnyGoodyear!
@theconnactic Great playing. I must admit I struggle with jazz but any song with a bass break is ok with me.
@Igneous1 Good retro sound sort of a funky Human League. Glad to see someone making music with Gadget. I got it when it came out but I never produced anything worthwhile with it.
@rickwaugh I've played this a couple of times and I'm still not sure what to make of it. Loved the acoustic guitar playing. I grew up on prog rock and I think this would make a great middle part of an extended prog piece with perhaps a more melodic theme to tie it all in. Or you could leave it as it is and keep challenging people's expectations.

Thanks for listening
@DD829 Far out man. It's great to hear the 6os are still alive and kicking. Ps if you want some rain, come to Swansea in South Wales where it has been pissing down since last August.
