heya, thanks for the warm welcome mr. goodyear,
yup its the album cut, ha.. after working at it a while to get some proper tunage underneath my language, didn't want to let it go.
Yes the vocals not up quite as much as i'd like in some spots.. some kinda equalizing gremlin almost sent me over the ... well, you know.. many thanks for the articulate listen !
many thanks for tuning in, them riffs come from little ol triq traq loaded with some old guitar. I really dig that critter.
I dot get to " balanced " very often do its very nice to hear.
cheers
@crouchie it's a good track, very well mixed and technically very proficient. Musically everything works, good dynamics, good groove and lots of interesting things going on to keep the track moving along - although it's a tad too long IMO. I do wish you'd made more use of your vocal though - you're one of the best vocalists on here and I think your voice really is your strongest point.
As it stands for me this is a perfectly OK track, but it doesn't have that much to make it stand apart from the hundreds of similar sequenced instrumentals I've heard in my life, even though it does have some cool parts in there. With the addition of some more singing I would get to really hear you, and that makes all the difference - to me anyway.
@crouchie hate to pile on but I agree with @richardyot on this one. We all (to a greater or lesser extent) have our strengths or (Dilbert alert) unique selling propositions and you have sold us very quickly on the personality of your voice, sufficiently so that work without a vocal to the forefront seems a little, I dunno, medium. Please take that as the huge compliment it's meant to be.
@richardyot Totally agree. My SOTM effort, "Trust the Silence," mostly rhymes, but sometimes it doesn't.
Hey folks! Here's the third song I made this month. I'll post here in this topic, because I really value the feedback of you all, but I don't mean it as a third entry for this month (otherwise I'd hijack the thread, which is never my intention). So @richardyot, you don't need to add it to the SOTM page.
The very simple melody of this song came accidentally when I was practising earlier today over some peculiar chord changes, between a recording session, hence the title of the song. The melody got stuck in my head, so writing a song with it was the logical alternative. Here it is:
@touchconspiracy, loved the moving bass riff of the beginning. The tone and the first two or three notes reminded me of Eurythmics greatest success, "Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This", but the music itself has little to do with it, being of a very modern kind. Liked a lot the compressed beat that comes after 1'40''. All in Gadget? Amazing.
@crouchie A thumpingly good dance track that has enough great sounds to keep your song interesting & not too busy. You can hear everything clearly, nothing seems out of place. My favourite section is from 3.30, almost New Ordery & with the way you've flicked the panning at 3.50 really appealed to my senses. All very tightly played & produced & nice one for experimenting with the EQing, next on my to do list.
I agree, your voice is too damn good to have such a sparse part in this months song. When it does come in, it lifts your tune to a higher level. Yes, it adds another texture & interest but it's such a big gun to have in your arsenal, I'd love to see/hear you roll it out more. I enjoyed the groove, a definate foot stomper to get the blood flowing. With more of your voice involved, it would creep a tad closer to "Bill" which, for me, is top of your song chart.
You've still created a fine dance experience, with a catchy, rhythmic sound that sinks into my pores to enjoy.
@theconnactic @richardyot @JohnnyGoodyear @Bluepunk
Thanks v much for your v detailed and honest comments! All the nice stuff about my previous singing bought a little tear to the eye ;-) Seriously though it's really good feedback for me, v flattering re the voice (you are never happy when you hear your own voice back are you? It never sounds how you want...), but also nice that the mixing sounded ok. Have a few vocal tunes at early stages so will try to get back to it. I'm also v conscious that I owe a lot of people reviews on here this month so will fix that asap. Cheers all
Can I join in?
This one is from 2014, though I recently remastered it with the new Lurssen Mastering Console app.
I used Alchemy Mobile routed through Audiobus to GliderVerb and Audio Mastering.

Welcome to SOTMC David. Will listen later to your track but I would be very interested on thoughts about the Lurssen Mastering Console too.
@DavidEnglish that's an interesting track, because I found the voices quite chilling, it sounds like a female choir singer who has been pitch-shifted downwards and that gives a disturbing effect. The track could do with more in the sense of progression though, because there is really only one idea there (even though it is a good one), and no sense of story/evolution/progression. I would have liked something else to happen in the course of those four minutes.
@Jocphone It has definitely improved the music tracks that I've run through it. The tracks seem less harsh and more open, with the various musical strands seeming more distinct. @Schimanski suggested that it gives the tracks a more analogue feel, and I think that's a good way to describe it. There is some variation possible with the presets and controls, though it's mostly a set-it and forget-it kind of mastering app.
Given the high price ($99.99) for the necessary IAP upgrade, it wasn't an easy decision for me. The first version (1.00) made it difficult to demo the app with your tracks, but the latest version (1.01) removed the two-minute limit and replaced the random silence with a moderate level of random noise . You still can't save anything with the free version, but you can get a good sense of whether or not it will substantially improve your tracks.
There are a few kinks in LMC that need to addressed in future updates. It doesn't appear to clear out the internally processed files, which makes the app grow ever larger with no way to clear out the clutter. It's currently taking up an additional 3GB of space, even after I have begun to delete projects. So I'll need to occasionally reinstall it just to keep the size down, until they have a fix for this issue.
I plan to use Auria Pro and the FabFilter plug-ins for real-time monitoring and mixing so that I can hear the results as I'm playing. Then I'll use LMC to give the saved file a nice polish.
Hope that helps.
Yes it does. Thank you. Will have to try the free/demo version at some point but think I might wait until they fix the clearing out old files defect first.
@Jocphone Both @Schimanski and I have opened support tickets on the files issue, so there's likely to be some solution going forward. And to be fair to IK Multimedia, the 3GB is a result of my exporting a bunch of 96kHZ/24-bit files, which would take up a large amount of internal space. Just wish I could free it up without having to reinstall the app. Since the demo version doesn't export files, it shouldn't be directly affected by this.
@richardyot Thanks for your comments. Everything you said rings true. I was concerned that the track might take too long to establish itself as a soundscape before it transforms musically towards a conclusion. Good call on picking out the pitch shift. I used a time-stretch plug-in within Sony Sound Forge to give it a slower pace and more eerie feel.
@DavidEnglish Welcome to SOTMC. Good to hear you here. As for the debut, I am a sucker for your resonance. I suppose it is lazy (or just an untutored ear) to call ambient/largely non-vocal pieces cinematic, but this has the sci-fi of unresolved quiet bitterness all over it. Foreboding. Inevitability. Resignation. It isn't a song as most here are (what is a song?), but I enjoyed it on its own merits. Without direct narrative (being it words or a film in front of you) the listener is left mostly with mood, but -when in the right mood- that's more than enough.
Yes mate, everything i do is all gadget, appreciate the comments
Wow, you guys have been busy!
I shall listen up and review I promise.
Right, this was quite a journey for me, which is why I’ve been “offline” for the last few weeks with only sporadic comments etc; I’ve been busy trying to get this thing out of my head and into a recorded format for your amusement and sniggering. This is quite different from the last one I did, and even further away from the metal/guitar stuff I was doing end of January, so I’ve run into most of the traps you can run into when trying to learn a new piece of software, which in my case was Ableton, spurred on by the fact it now has Link. Heads up: the song isn’t actually “finished”, I have a clear plan for at least 3 additional tracks, but as those mainly will include section build-ups or ambient “more” I think it works as it stands now as well. I also need time to replace tracks 7 & 8 with other drums, but these will do for now, especially as I don’t see how I, due to work, will be able to fit in fine tuning those things before the end of the month.
So, for the process I guess it is easiest to explain the different tracks:
1. Alchemy - Off Road (tweaked)
Old Alchemy desktop recorded into Ableton Live Lite 9.6, in one take. This was the first thing I recorded as I had pretty much written it in Logic Pro X with “new” Alchemy, so I only had to re-do it for this, and with a different controller. What this track does is also the main idea for the song, the rest is about fleshing it out or putting it into context.
Controller: iPad Pro running ChordPolyPad with dual x/y pad set-ups for each chord/section. Midi from iPad to iMac via MusicIO.
Effects/Plug-ins: FabFilters, Pro-MB & Pro-Q2
2. Alchemy - Off Road
Copy of track 1, but with deleted parts to change automation patterns and notes
Effects/Plug-ins: FabFilters, Pro-MB & Pro-Q2
3. FF Twin 2 - Schnauss Pad RD (out of the box)
Just a pad via the excellent Twin 2
The midi is a copy (with some edits) of track 1. As the sound is a lot slower pad than track 1 it works as a complement.
Effects/Plug-ins: FabFilters, Pro-Q2 & Timeless 2
4. Fieldscaper
Field recording made whilst commuting. 3 channels with different effects to create a soundscape background. Runs for the entire song after the drums has started. Can be heard in isolation at the end.
Effects/Plug-ins: FabFilters, Simplon, Timeless 2, Pro-Q2
5. iZotope Iris 2 - Keys - Ambient Piano of Sorts preset (tweaked)
This is the intro, mid and ending “lead” part.
Controller: iMac Keyboard (QWERTY)
Effects/Plug-ins: FabFilters Pro-Q2
6. FF One - Plain Magic preset (tweaked)
The excellent One does the job of the bass (again). It is not “up in your face” as track 1 has a quite distinct bass to it too. This one is just to give a foundation to stand on.
Controller: I hand-jogged this into the piano roll.
Effects/Plug-ins: FabFilters, Saturn, Pro-Q2 and Pro-MB
7. Drum loop
This is the drum track with some drive. To be replaced later.
Effects/Plug-ins: FabFilters, Pro-Q2, Pro-MB, Pro-DS
8. Drum loop
This is the intro/mid/end drum loop. To be replaced later.
Effects/Plug-ins: FabFilters, Pro-L, Pro-Q2, Pro-MB
Not having a great set-up for reference listening I did what I could with what I have, but it isn’t really “mastered” in that sense, I just tweaked, listened, frowned, adjusted things, listened, moved to other speakers etc.
Enjoy (or something) and give feedback.
Oh, and this with me doing a song in Ableton, albeit involving my iPad, isn't me moving "off the iPad" etc, however for me it is more about being able to be creative with the devices I have, and for which the iPad is my creative center. I hope that is alright. Just trying to find workable routes to get stuff out of my head.
@JohnnyGoodyear Thanks for your comments. Hey, I'm happy with my music being referred to as cinematic. I have a background in film (or, more precisely, film history), so I'll take that as a compliment. I also like your phrase: "Foreboding. Inevitability. Resignation." That might look good on a movie poster.
@hellquist this one has a very strong and enticing atmosphere, the pads at the start really drew me in. A strong groove keeps it humming along and the arps are also interesting to listen to. There is a bit of a disconnect between the background pads which are very ethereal and the lead/arp which is more in your face - the result being that they have a completely different feel from each other, they don't really sound as if they belong to the same track, but they are both good and lend some contrast to each other and this does create some interesting dynamics in the track.
Overall I really liked the track and enjoyed multiple listens. It has all the things that I look for in music: melody, groove, dynamics, and feeling.
I've updated the second post in the thread and the SoundCloud account with the latest entries. This is a good opportunity to remind everyone that if you post a track, you must also take the time to comment on the other tracks that have been posted.
Here's a link to the SoundCloud page with all the latest tracks:

Nice song, @hellquist: I liked the overall mood of it, despite at times it sound a little bit like an "Ableton Song" (a collage of loops chosen arbitrarily during the songwriting or recording stage), but mostly it sounds like a cohesive and deliberate creation, and also loved the very dynamic tone you used for the synth arp. The mix is absolutely balanced, so congrats for this as well.
@Jocphone I heard back from IK Multimedia support on how to delete the LMC processed files. They show up in the File Sharing section of iTunes where you can remove the files individually.
It would good to be able to do this without a computer, but at least there's a way to clear out the clutter.
@crouchie, great tune. Man, that moves. Love the mix, great clean sound, everything in it's place. It's probably a bit long for me, needs either some more breaks in it to split it up a bit, or just to be shorter.
@touchconspiracy, nice track. Maybe also a bit long for me. Did you remaster it for this? Great mix also. I don't know if it's easier to do a mix on electronica - the sounds are as a whole cleaner and more compressed than using analog instruments, I'd think.
Lovely track. Mate you'd get on well with the lads I'm in a band with! They love all that. They can't get on with my stuff at all, but they let me sing, which is nice. Your tune is great, spot on. There are bits where I'd like the horns to be more prominent, but what do I know, eh? It's light years ahead of my tunes. Brilliant!
This is really well structured, layered and played. The different sounds ebb and flow really well, and that's what keeps me interested. Textures the tune really well. I whisper it but I am not the big fan of Gadget except for constructing beats because everything I make just sounds too neat and flat. This suffers a little from that but what you have done gets past that most of the time and the constant variety of your arrangement is really impressive. Find a way to stick a vocal on it I say!
Brilliant that, although with my microscopic musical knowledge I feel I'm only really aware of a small percentage the ways in which it is brilliant. Nice one. I noticed your comment to someone else asking if mixing digital music is easier than acoustic instruments, but I can of course assure you that digital is infinitely more difficult and in no way a bit like filling in a spreadsheet then throwing a load of filters at it.... ;-)
Fair play, it's a good folky number. The mix is nice, thought the vocal harmonies were really nice in there. Style-wise it's not my thing but it's a great example of how good things can sound on this platform. Great stuff.
