Would love to see this in action....
It's funny (or maybe not) how this thread has gone through a lot of phases, including discussions totally unrelated to AUM, and often hot discussions or critique of totally unrelated apps. What a monster thread!
Both very interesting ideas. Maybe the first one is a bit too "automagic" for my taste, or maybe not! Channel presets is already on my list of possible pending features in the form of channel templates. So you could save a channel as a template, and then make a new channel from any previously saved template. Perhaps by long-pressing the add-channel button, etc.. It would try to recreate everything in the channel, but would skip IAA nodes that are already used in the session (since they can only have one instance).

No doubt. Minds will wander. AUM is fantastic. Thanks much for making it. Pretty sure I’m using about 4% of it, and probably incorrectly, but I still love it.
I'm definitely gonna get it on payday.
Thanks for considering them @j_liljedahl.
Another possible time shaver: on any given channel that has a bus input, add a 'create sends for all existing tracks*' so that if you decide you want a reverb send, you don't need to manually go through and add a send to each existing channel. Did I mention that I'm incredible lazy? really it's that I have the musical memory of a coin so anything that makes me stop thinking about what I'm creating has the chance to totally derail it. So yeah, I like these sorts of workflow butterings.
* with the exception of whichever track the current bus is pointing to to avoid feedback loops.
Elastic Drums keeps quitting on me halfway through a recording . It mucks about in audio bus as well tho so prob not an aum issue
First off want to thank @j_liljedahl for some most excellent programming. Not only are the technical chops superb, the UI is just so nice. Intuitive and I dare say beautiful!
So I picked up the Blamsoft set as well, and I'm really glad it went universal. The AU way of running inside the host makes playing with settings and playing the sounds using the AUM keyboard really quick. Really smooth to pop into Viking or one of the effects and tweak a knob and be able to instantly hear the change. Not to mention the AU architecture allowing multiple instances! I've played with Frobulator/Muckraker/Nebulizer and DubFilter as well, but the switching back and forth between apps just isn't as fun. I suppose it would be possible to setup something playing in a loop then switch over and tweak, but with AU it's just easier to play around. If those apps went AU I would definitely be willing to pay for them. Anyone have a list of AU apps that are universal?
I have run into one bug. Not sure if it's in AUM or Blamsoft. Partly because I don't have any other AUs, partly because I'm not exactly sure how the AU architecture divvies responsibility for UI interaction. If AUM is in portrait mode, tapping on Viking or any of the effects, then tapping on preset menu will allow scrolling and picking and trying with the keyboard before closing the preset menu. Closing the preset menu can be done by tapping the menu icon again, or anywhere outside the menu really. However if AUM is in landscape mode then opening the preset will allow scrolling and picking, but everything else is just a bit grayed out so no using the keyboard. Worse there doesn't seem to be any way to exit the menu. The only thing I've found to work is to rotate the phone back to portrait, then it will go away on its own. The keyboard and making knob adjustments would be easier in landscape, so that's a bit of a bummer. The preset menu is centered on the screen in landscape. In portrait there's a triangular shape off the edge that points at the preset menu icon. Not sure if that difference means anything with respect to the "modal" (can't input into any other components on screen) nature of the menu in landscape. This is on an iPhone 6s Plus with iOS 9.2.1 (still waiting for more people's feedback on 9.3.1). Can anyone reproduce this bug? Is it on iPad too?
@j_liljedahl is it possible to do side chain as yet
Yep, do you have AUFX:Push?
Yes i do, is there documentation on how its done
Push has multiple ports. The first one is the actual Compressor while the second one, named key, will be the sidechaining input. Just load em on your tracks and set your compressor. For example:
channel 1 has a lead synth which is going to be compressed
Channel 2 is loaded with the kick track which will compress channel 1 output.
Load push(plain) on channel one and push(key) on channel two
And you are good to go
thanks will try.
Work like a CHARM, Thanks GUYS
Great to hear that
Thanks for the report! This seems to be iPhone 6 (or 6s, or plus) specific, because it doesn't happen on my 5C. The frustrations of iOS development... I will investigate and see if I can find anything.
Thanks! Happy to do some testing if you need any more info
@j_liljedahl
Apologies if it's been mentioned already. I've only read about 1/3 of the pages on this epic thread. But it would be nice to be able to name the Mix Buses. No big deal, but it's kinda hard to remember what A through H are doing some times.
+1 for naming mix buses, especially useful since you often get long projects so you have to scroll a fair bit to see which mix bus is which.
Add me on. Superior (simple) idea.
Not having the problem @srcer described. 9.3 iPhone 6. Tried several blamsoft AUs including Viking and couldn't reproduce it.
So loading AUM In AB does state save everything? Could you please share your AB preset?
Inter-App Audio has no mechanism for state saving, but Audio Unit extensions do. That's why Audiobus made their own mechanism for state saving. I could do that as well, but it would require each developer to implement "AUM state saving" using my SDK, just like they now might implement Audiobus state saving.
AUM itself supports Audiobus state saving, but it can't save state for IAA apps hosted inside AUM (there's no available standard/technology to do that), only for the built-in nodes (EQs etc) and Audio Unit extensions.
This is why I always use AUM and AudioBus together. All but AU's I try to put in AudioBus. I then put AUM in as both an input and an output. The Non-AU instruments appear as inputs in AUM, even though they're hosted in AudioBus. AudioBus App switching and AudioBus remote can be leveraged, and state saving in AudioBus works in most cases for the whole setup. I also find that the start/stop function in AudioBus is able to start and stop more applications than AUM's (though that's probably just ignorance of setup on my part).
The two are like left-hand / right-hand for me. I rarely find myself working in only one or the other.
Its all good but all those extra steps. I really hope more devs get into the AU bandwagon. Its here, and its not gonna go away. Lets just all bind together as a great family of musicians and make this happen for the good of music. I know AB is awesome and legendary, now the new technology offerings are opening new avenues in IOS lets all make it happen. Can we?
No.
Thanks, I've gone ahead and updated to iOS 9.3.1, but still seeing this problem. So perhaps it's a 6s or Plus problem. Anyone tried it on a 6s or a 6 Plus? Can you still use the keyboard in landscape while scrolling and picking presets? Are the other parts of the app grayed at all?
This is probably some weird quirk of iOS when running on 6S, that I need to work around somehow. Unfortunately I don't own a 6S so can't test it myself, but will look into it and try to solve it for the next bugfix update.
God bless the file player sync and delayed-start functions in AUM, I'm using it as a makeshift DAW, stitching together samplr sessions to multiply by sixes...
