IceWorks Mersenne "Melodic Percussion Synthesizer" goes live

Mersenne - Melodic Percussion Synthesizer by iceWorks, Inc.
https://appsto.re/us/LJ4Nab.i
Mersenne was a mathematician, priest, music theorist, in 1600s, developed formulae for string vibration and other cool shit (had to look him up). Had a quick play, very special range of sounds, lots of control.
(Yes it's actually IceGear but AppStore has them listed as IceWorks, maybe I linked to an English as second language AppStore, European stores get the gear ahead of LA...)

  • Oooooo will be getting that come pay day :)

I'm hesitating. Melodic percussion doesn't sound that exciting to me, but I like iceGear, it's a nice UI and pretty cheap at the moment...

To say a bit more, don't be fooled by the word "percussive" and think of this as mostly a synthesized drum machine. In fact, getting sounds like kicks, snares, toms, and symbols looks hard.

It is truly a melodic synthesizer. Most of the presets are very bell like. They sound great, but I was hoping to get more wooden than metallic tones as well. (E.g. The Capella preset, which still has a distinctive bell like nature.) also, Laplace may be better for wood type tones.

I instabought because of the developer, the low price coupled with a 20% discount iTunes card.

It sounds beautiful. In the same way Laplace and Lorentz have their own personalities, Mersenne is its own beast.

Thumbs up. Glad I bought. (Oh, and it's tiny, really tiny, 3.3 MB)

Now I'm going to see if I can beat @funjunkie27 to different drummer!

Edit: Don't forget the synth engine, it goes way beyond the presets. Nice interface, all on one page! (Unlike Lorentz! My bad, I was thinking of another synth.) Also, an arpeggiator.

  • Cool, always a fan of nice chimes n bells. Will add this to the next card.

I like it too BUT it is VERY bell-y (technical term). Would make a fab Gadget :)

  • Yay a drum synth from IceWorks!!!

Once again, not very "drummy", more percussive, and bell like. I'm playing to get rid of the ring, seeking a duller, more wooden bell like tone.

"Melodic" is a good word. "Pitched" is one thing, but you really could play lead melodies with this.

Should add that it's very easily tweakable and, as ever for this dev, you can jump straight into the arp.

If I were a cultural appropriator (no!) I would run this up against some Drumjam and imagine myself drinking coffee outside a Thai temple in the midst of a summer rainstorm....

Ok, I got wood. (It's not what you think!)

Here's my simple xylophone patch. Simply mute the noise/resonator and second oscillator, and play around:

    It's all semantics

Has it got Link yet? Or Audio Unit-ness?

  • No link nor audio unit, but great synth, very easy to tweak.

  • Two more words (and another username): fugue machine @Alexandernaut.

  • It needs link, but some lovely tones and rhythms can be coaxed out of it.
All the Icegear synths would definitely benefit from link integration for the arpeggiator

This a hundred times; they must be on it, surely.

Hehe, nice. I tend to leave comments like that hanging for others to jump on.

  • Can you save different Arp *patterns? Thanks.

Yeah, I think this could be a marriage made in heaven. Does Mersenne have MIDI in?

I find myself futzing with the Hang and other metallic/wood instruments in DrumJam all the time. This looks to be in the same range, eh?

  • I was planning on a Different Drummer analogy until I saw @johnfromberkeley comment on having wood and just lost focus altogether. Must get image out of head!

The video does sound nice, and I would be curious what more could be coaxed out.

If anyone is curious though, Different Drummer does pitched percussion as well. In fact, that's one of the cornerstones of the app. I use it from time to time, but if you don't want it, you can lock the tracks for straight drums sounds.

Yeah but the big difference there is that DD is sample-based. To me, this is like a pared down, more straight to the point version of Attack.

  • Very true @CalCutta . Different animals.

  • I love Chromaphone on my desktop, so this was an insta-buy.

That was the point. Have the note wave drive Mersenne.
