While laying in bed feeling like I've come worse off in a fight with a dumper truck, I've just pieced together 2 musical ideas for jamming with.

Back in the old days, I would have had to walk into my studio. Switch all the power on. Wait for certain gear to load up or reach a certain temperature. Set mixer and monitor levels. Still waiting for my PC to load. Wiggle a few cables into life. Spend 5 minutes wondering why I had unplugged the compressor from the usual channels last session. Fix the PC crash with a quick kick. Check my midi routings against my hastily scribbled notes.

And finally switch everything off as the wife is calling me for dinner.

By which time no music was produced.

    Long live my iPad B)

I understand that but many people seems to compare it to their old pc's and setups.
How i said, modern notebooks can do that all too.
I was hoping to get pleased with the new iPad Pro but now that i know that the smaller one use just usb 2 it is a bit of bummer for me again.
The large one is just way too expensive.
Still thinking about to buy a used one because i want to be able to use NanoStudio 2.... if that comes ever i mean.

Agree, a modern computer or notebook has its place too. Same goes for hardware.

Don't doubt I would still have a studio if I could still afford one ;)

Who remembers the old rendering progress windows ? And that was on a top end PC :o

  • I want every upgrade. iPad 2 to iPad Mini 2 was a wow upgrade. Same for Mini 2 to Air 2. This new iPad is set to provide a huge performance boost, even going from Air 2.

All that said, I'm waiting to hear about the RAM...

  • I'm an upgrade tart also, but especially when one leapfrogs, say, from Air1 to Pro. The difference gets to feel much more so....(I keep telling myself as I put money in the jar).

  • as the effects of the kool-aid wear off... what exactly makes this "pro"??? It has the exact physical form of the Air 2 (+ a camera bump) All of the internal upgrades are consistent with the annual iPad refresh cycle. Maybe it's "pro" because Apple have been so generous to give us the option to spend more money on it (Pencil, keyboard) ...

I'm somewhat miffed that the "base model" iPad at $499 just no longer exists and that the 32GB is now $599. 32GB should have been the base iPad storage back in 2012.

[sorry, same rant from me every year at iPad announcement time. I just had to get it off my chest. I'm done now. ]

  • Air1 here and waiting for RAM info, too

  • Curious here too. Interested to note if the improved specs (over an Air 2) would result in significantly improved performance for audio (?).

The 12MP camera isn't of much interest to me, as it's form factor isn't ideal for photography :)

  • ...does this new thing really have that ugly camerabump? Are you sure? T'would be saddening.

Yep it looks like it :(

  • They should have made it thicker and put more battery in

  • @Fruitbat1919: very much so!, now this does un-water my mouth now. I know, it's a tiny thing, but to me an absolute no-go-design-sin!

For the first time, I'm considering buying a wifi only iPad.

Other than not being able to access internet over cellular, are there any other disadvantages I should know about related to music making?

(I plan to keep my iPad Air 2 with Logitech keyboard as my "work" iPad. )

I've always had Wifi only iPad Mini 2, never had a problem with net Access, If I'm at home or in town I can find a wifi, if not then I just use my phone as a wifi hotspot :)

Same here. Paying for a contract with one sim is quite enough for me. Creating a portable hotspot with a phone is super easy these days. At least it is on my ancient galaxy s2

  • My iPad 3 was actually working well for me, though I don't know how well it work with Auria Pro. My Air 2 is 64 gig - 32 gig is just too small. But 64 is manageable when you have dropbox or an external drive.

I'm wait the waiters. Yes, be nice to have the extra computational power. But I doubt I'd be able to get away from having to freeze tracks as much, which is really the only PITA I'm going through.

Oh yes, just noticed this yet too. That is very stupid design decision for a device which might lay flat on a table.
It's not the worlds end but i also don't see it why they hammer together these devices in the last years.
Now the small pro has the iPhone 6S camera but no usb3. The big one has a "bad" camera on both sides, no lightning for the camera but usb3.
The new iPhone SE has everything but the 3D touch.
If the small iPad Pro had 3D touch it would be an insta buy......
Mmhhh, there are still iPad Pros 128GB wifi out there for about 800€. But i don't trust that iOS.....

  • No matter how much RAM an iPad have: as long as iOS limits the RAM usage for any single app to 500MB, freezing tracks will continue to be part of our experience.

In fact, since the Air 2 - which is as powerful as a Core 2 Duo - the hardware is there already. it's up to Apple to port full OSX to ARM, or at least make an "iOS Pro" that doesn't have these ridiculous bottlenecks - which are that way by design, so it keeps approximately the same user experience on all compatible iDevices range.

  • As for myself, I decided to keep my Air 1 until Apple allows for apps to use as much RAM as their devs think they need. Out with the 512MB limit!!

  • According to Cult of Mac, the new 9.7" iPad Pro will be slower than the big one:

    http://www.cultofmac.com/419127/new-ipad-pro-is-slower-than-12-9-inch-model/

  • And it only had 2GB of RAM, seems like a silly move instead putting in 4GB like the larger Pro to me.

    Is this definite?

  • That's disappointing :(

The Apple event felt very subdued and light on detail and missing that oooh factor...a very by the numbers event.

I guess for me personally the ipad is just an extension of my mac book pro.

A great portable sketchbook with some great apps and functions and a half way option between vst's and actual hardware synths providing hands on control of each parameter missing from software but without the tactile feel of hardware (a good, inexpensive compromise).

As far as replacing my macbook pro with an ipad pro thats another thing entirely which is something i dont think Apple really want me to do.

  • Sadly, selfishly, and after the little dust has settled (and despite the 256GB which is nice); I STILL want the big version that I wanted yesterday, but I'm also still guessing the answer is to wait until the next shindig (November) and then buy. So, sticking to the Early Christmas Present Justification Strategy etc.

  • Its so weird, the pro 9.7 has better camera, a flash and other stuff that completely beat the pro 12.9 but the larger one has USB 3 speed, more RAM, and faster processor (apparently). So you can't have it all no matter which one you buy.

Unless you buy them all....perhaps their strategy emerges :)

It was rewarding to see Tim Cook finally answer my call. Been on him for ages now for a 256gb model. Thank you, you're welcome ;)

    Thanks mucho

  • Uuuurghh.... so iPad Pro means just pencil support eh´?!
A shame when it just has 2 GB ram. It´s maybe good for older devices to handle newer apps for longer time. But it also will hold developers back to create more "pro" apps.
That also means that the iPad of my interest would be now the 256GB 12.9" which is a freaking 1269€ or even an out of space 1419€ for the 4G version :open_mouth:
Well, if they put 32GB ram on their next macbooks i might forgive them. But the price would be beyond good and evil too!

Simple..... buy a small and a large one >:)

  • so,it has only 2 GB ram?AND that ugly camera bump?I'm quite happy about the small pro cause that makes my air 2 still shine for at least one more year

The 2gb and camera bump are making me think about waiting :(

  • Hmmmm....no wonder they seemed a little sheepish at the event
