http://iphone.appleinsider.com/articles/16/03/22/apples-97-ipad-pro-discovered-to-have-2gb-of-ram-half-that-of-129-model
This article mentions some benchmarks performed on prerelease Pro 9.7's & the dinky 5SE phone.
I now feel 100% certain (even if actually a bit disappointed) with staying with my Air 2 for next year or two. 2GB of RAM for the 9.7 is just silly in my view. Apple has always been weird with their hardware specs and it was a big factor of my decision to get Android phones the last 6 years.
Their internal reasoning of course is if the actual 'standard user' performance is there then that's paramount...not the needs or desires of a small niche segment of the iOS user base. But as mentioned it's not just "if 2 GB RAM works for most then beautiful", it is also because iOS has a very limiting structure where bottlenecks and below potential performance is the norm.
They no doubt realize if a 4GB RAM Pro 9.7 won't show an appreciable edge over the 2GB RAM version then why eat away any of their profitability by adding more expensive, specification window dressing. Apple has sold more products with marketing language, slogans & iThis and iThat branding than specs anyway.
man... was waiting for the 9.7" to go with my mini 4 , looks like I'm back on Surface pro meditation time.
For GB of RAM would be nice, but 2 GB is not bad, folks: all iOS apps are quite optimised and less resource-hungry then their Desktop counterparts, and some, such as Auria's Lyra, work fine with disk streaming. The real issue is iOS and its preposterous bottlenecks. E.G.: what the point of having a 4GB iPad if your apps can only use 512 MB at any given time?
I really hope they make real changes in iOS10. Otherwise, I'll keep my Air 1 and invest my scarse money elsewhere.
Tell me if I'm wrong:
I understand that one app can only use up to 512mb of ram.
But doesn't having more ram mean we can safely run many ram hungry apps at once?
So 4gb would have been better for running more apps?
no, an app can use more than 512mb of ram, it is automatically force closed if RAM on the device crosses a certain threshold, not sure the magic number. At work we have been working on an app that was using a lot of RAM, and saw it comfortably using more than 600MB on a 2GB device, but it was getting force closed on a 1GB device.
So the more the better.
I thought I would not need much more than my Air 2, but with AUM, AB, Auria Pro and Link meaning I use more apps together now, I was looking forward to 4gb of ram.
I could see logic in Apple making this an iPad Pro and keeping the 12" Pro depth to help it have higher spec and battery space. Keeping an Air sized device at the lower price level for those that don't need the extra spec - made sense.
This seems like an Air / Pro hybrid - thinner, less ram, usb2, four speaker, pen enabled.
This is not the Gold Standard range that the 9.7 devices used to be and hence why people would pay a premium.
I'm thinking I'm better off putting my money into something else to go with my Air2 instead of adding another iPad - back to a guitar or modular me thinketh.
iPad Pro 2 9.7 for me please.
But is there not also the "problem" that iOS music apps can't use 100% cpu (or nearly) for audio processing?
now i want big Pro model, again
Me too....and so Apple did everything right
Not sure how useful the usb 3 to sd card reader would be. I think it´s not possible to stream f.e. audio samples into apps in real time....or?
I know Auria pro supports extern space but it seems just for backup or sharing projects. With usb 3 speed it would be great to have more options. But then..... we just need to buy a giant SSD and go for a cheaper iPad.
I still could get one 128 GB 12.9" for 800€ but i´m a bit scared that i don´t like it and i can´t test it because it´s a private buy.....
I really thought about to just order one from apple, test it 2 weeks to explore what it can do for me.
But then i also could better buy NI Komplete Ultimate plus one of the Komplete Kontrol hardware (since it´s on sale until April) plus a 2 TB extern SSD (because my 250 intern and my 250 extern are full) for the same......ouch!!
Does anyone know what the new charging adapter allows?
Simultaneous charging and connection to audio interface?
Yuck how depressing, they've just shown that the 'pro' is nothing more than a brand name not a concept, this is an Air 3 and even for that I was expecting more ram. I'll look at the 12 inch pro 2 when it comes out but this doesn't fill me with confidence it will be improved much.
OK... The last keynote was a decision maker for me... As soon as I learnt that the new iPad Pro embeds only 2Go of RAM and that Apple would not provide 128Go Air 2s anymore (check their website, 32 and 64Go only, to make you buy a 'Pro' if you need more space I guess), I ran to my store and bought (for half the price of the new Pro model) an iPad Air 2 128Go before they are out of stock (it's already hard to find some colours for this size of Air 2 over here in France).
So finally, I replaced my first iPad, an Air 1 with 32Go (I was struggling with too little space for a long time now), for a 1 and 1/2 year old Air 2 with 128Go... Thanks for this keynote Apple (if you could have told us about the 2Go of RAM sooner, I would have bought an Air2 Sooner...)
Funny I think... But I'm happy with my new IPad, and it costed me less money :-)

If the 9.7 "Pro" is only 2GB , it is not only disappointing as a potential user ,
but brings Apple's advertising transparency into question IMO.
I know Apple have never included RAM in their specs previously , but I don't think they've ever advertised two products as being equal before , so I wonder if Advertising Standards Agency would be interested that "Pro , now in 2 sizes " advertising is misleading if it doesnt clarify the important difference in RAM between the two models ?
I feel exactly the same
It's all been a dastardly trick to make me buy the Big Boy.
Or 2 Air2s.. seem better value for similar money ; more processing , even better screen split ! , ...Ableton Link syncing between devices
Apple should of named it, "iPad Pro Mini".......
Actually Tim Cook's aim to make the Pro a PC replacement has backfired in my household,
as it's got me thinking the money I was saving for a Pro may be better spent as a PC replacement ..i.e a new PC to replace my old one .
I feel you, but I want something that nestles as required on my capacious lap...
My bad guys in an earlier post I thought that the IPAD PRO 9.7 had 4Gb of RAM.
It only has 2GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage
It has the same processor and graphics chip as the larger IPAD PRO
(clocked at a slower speed of course...Thanks Apple)
It would have to be faster than an IPAD Air 2
but slower than the larger IPAD PRO
.
I have an air1 and a mini2... Will wait for Mini Pencil.
Can't believe they backstepped on the RAM - genuinely surprised.
Still, finally having a 256 storage option on an iPad that runs faster than the Air 2 isn't unattractive at all. Just not as attractive as it could have been.
Well, not feeling as bad now about my recent purchase of the Kingstone MobileLite G3 for offloading audio content, etc. via Auria Pro and Goodreader to keep my 128Gb Air 1 relevant for another year or two
I went from a "most-probably-gonna-buy-this" to "not-even-gonna-consider-it" in a matter of seconds.
same amount of RAM as the iPad released 1.5 years ago...
the more I think about it the more depressing this is. I'm just gonna forget the whole announcement.
... so, back to saving up for 12.9" iPad Pro.
Exactly the same for me. For the cost of the big Ipad Pro I can get a pretty wicked PC to replace my currently-wheezing model.
also some insight into the 'new' Apple strategy to deal with our disappointing buying habits, and how a ratcheting-up of planned obsolescence (i.e. the 2gb 'Pro') will put us in our proper place: http://www.wired.com/2016/03/apple-new-ipad-2/
hi guys, thanks for all your help
i'm considering buying an iPad pro to give me access to some synthesis methods i currently do not have access to and to multi track record my hardware studio, but also to use some as yet unknown music apps like a midi seq or sampler.
Given all this do you guys think the 2gb ram ipad pro would be good enough for my use case? I really don't want to get an ipad pro 12 inch because i think it maybe to big to carry around with me.
What are your thoughts on this guys?
your help would be most welcome thanks from trey
Should work fine, people have been doing just that with the Air2 earlier versions just fine. I personally feel that the difference between 2GB and 4GB is not even an issue for most iOS musicians.
I've seen much wailing about numbers on here but has anyone got any tangible, real world experiences or reviews of the performace on the new Pro?
