  • I'm sure the new 9.7 Pro will be great in use, just as my Air2 is.

I just see it as its not an update that really has a great deal going for it over my Air2 for the cost.

Updated camera (pretty useless for myself)

Keeps Air size body (I would have liked the thicker 12" body with more battery and less need to under clock the processor)

    Faster processor (yes always useful)

Pen and keyboard (pretty useless at the extra cost for music use)

4 Speakers (nice but again I would still have to use headphones or monitors most of the time)

256gb option (truly great but a tad expensive)

Better screen (yeah great, but my Air2's screen is pretty great anyway)

But what really pisses me off....

....all this Apple talk of this being a replacement for a laptop. Even with the power, pen, keyboard and 256gb, it really won't do many things that a laptop does.

same amount of RAM as the iPad released 1.5 years ago...

the more I think about it the more depressing this is.

    >
    yes ,even more so when remembering Air1 > Air2 = 1.5 X CPU , 2 X RAM for no price increase .
So what exactly is the price increase for , if 9.7 "Pro" does only have 2Gb of RAM?
    I paid £480 for 64 gb Air2 with 2gb RAM 18 months ago ,
    now it's £499 for 32 !!! gb & no extra RAM ?
How are they trying to encourage Ipad sales by offering less & charging more ?

Ouch I hadn't noticed the price increase - it's huge!

The base model has gone up a £100, from £399 to £499, admittedly with more storage, but storage has got cheaper.

A brand new iPad Air 2, 128GB (at launch time) was £559. The new model is £619 for the 128GB storage option, an extra £60, and for that you just get a minor CPU bump and a slightly nicer display. They really are gouging.

Now I know why they didn't call it the iPad Air 3. iPad Pro means they can charge more!

  • At one time Apple was in the business of "doing something astonishing" but it seems they have moved on to other methods. :/

Simultaneous charging and connection to audio interface?

    yep,exactly.

Positively. All of these comments echo my thoughts exactly. Of course Cook & Co. will sell more of these 9.7's to soccer moms and college kids looking to "Netflix & Chill" but I see our demographic as an important one.

I would guess those in tech industries, graphic artists (who'll just go straight to the big Pro anyway) and older gen iPad owners were surprised and as disappointed as we musician/producers are with the new 'standard size' iPad.

Those who wanted to jump can do like ElGrecoLoco did and feel 100% comfortable with the purchase: An Air 2 128GB before they disappear would be choice or like mine a 64GB wouldn't be too bad either. Storage in the cloud and Auria backup to external drives makes 64Gigs not seem too small. Bottom line, the increases in spec and quality are incremental at best with a Pro 9.7 and the law of diminishing returns has started to show up more and more in today's tech. You can only get so fast before the differences aren't startling, or ever nearly noticeable.

The RAM was the selling point in my eyes (I was certain the Air 3 now 9.7 would at LEAST double the Air 2's RAM given how the cost has gone down and if they want to try and align iPads as desktop replacements then make sure multiple apps can run with no snags!) Very disappointing all around. But hey, grab an Air 2 and you'll still be in tall cotton anyway...

Agree totally. The ram was important and I was going to buy one.

I've got to say, this desktop replacement tack they are taking annoys me while they continue to keep a 'Pro' monikered unit thin and lacking in the specs that pro users really want to see.

This is a Pro Air hybrid not a Pro iPad.

I just still hope that the iPad pro is just the prototype of the new macbook pro retina with touch.
I mean....damn put that freaking screen just on a real computer with a real keayboard with dual boot..... no mixed OS needed. They just had to interacte like iPhones and macbooks still do.
But no.... they sell us a crippled device with crippled OS, sell an overpriced crappy keyboard without backlight with it (but even just with the american layout even in Germany), want us to buy a pencil on top.
Put that all together to get the most out of your new custom build "PC".... just for 1707€ (in Germany).
I payed less for my new macbook pro retina 15".....
Of course we know they take premium but really it is now behind everything i want spend for a mobile device which is still mainly an extended smartphone without the option to make phone calls.
Well, i also experienced that "touch" is super great in some areas but i also get a bit tired of it while fiddling with tiny knobs, sliders which won´t stay at a certain value and the missing tactile feedback.
For me it´s still a big part of the future for sure but it´s more an additional version of input rather than THE big new thing for everything.
So time for something new.... i still wait now for the first music tools to support those new VR toys. Minority report style performances with a synth? Why not. But hey, wouldn´t that not also be a kind of 3D touch control?!
What i still need (and try to build myself now) would be a notebook with a touch screen below the keyboard (like a giant trackpad) which i can use as trackpad or as mullti-touch screen connected to the main screen in front of me.
I still wait what they offer for new Macbooks in sommer maybe but then i really really give up on apple...... of course no one cares, apple included..... but who knows, maybe some apple employee reads this forums ;)
So dear apple, i alow you to steal my device idea....just PLEASE make it under 3 grands then!

Edit: And don´t forget because Apple´s bla bla bla of renew their things.... your smart covers will not work for the pro version....just buy them new!!! LOL....... I for me just hope the iPad sales continue to sink down..... someone must stop the madness!!

  • Seems like I am the only dude who is going to buy one. Currently on air2 but am really interested in using the pencil. Haven't done any visual art in a long time. As I always have my iPad with me, I feel ill be much more inclined to do more. The ram is indeed a bit disappointing. My live setup only uses one app though (mobmuplat), so ram isn't much of a concern for me.

There will be lots of dudes joining you buying these. And the experience will for sure be improved from the Air 2... I even wonder if the experience will be better than the 12.9". This smaller one has far less screen real estate to keep refreshed. That will make a difference in some graphics intensive scenarios.

In spite of the improvements, we just expected more from the Apple brand name, oh well.

That´s true. As long as it doesn´t needs a lot ram, the performance could be even better.

Really? Did we do that still after all these years?? :D

  • ...I'm still a bit of an idealist. ;-)

Truth is I always impatiently wait for sales and end up buying at least 1 year after iOS products are released. That also gives me enough time to know exactly what I'm getting into.

  • ....If only I knew what would happen in September.....as regards the Big Pro.....

    Looks nice
But I am waiting for 3D touch before I update again ...
But we are on the right track :)

WWDC is only 3 month away,
Lets see what iOS X brings ...
    Drag and drop?
    Search that finds something?
    Thumbs pressed

The new onboard sound with stereostage is really nice
    Was about ****ing time lol

  • The whole desktop replacement talk is absolute BS. There's always something I have to turn my desktop for that my iPad cannot do. It has nothing to do with CPU or RAM but the strangled software that IOS is.

If it wasn't for the music production I probably wouldn't own an IPad. I've tried using IPhone as a phone and failed. There's always something that isn't quite right. My galaxy s2 is slow like shit but I still keep choosing it over 5s's and 6's.

So give me a break mr Cook with your 'premium', 'powerful experience' and the rest of your corporate talk.

Same here. If I wasn't making music I would never have bought an iPad. iPad has the music apps, price points and touch screen.

The Pro iPads are getting too close to the price of a MacBook Pro.

  • here here!

    Yep.

iPad Pro 12.9" with 128GB and keyboard = within $200 of the base 13" MBPro with 128GB

  • & as long as file folders are only accessible with iTunes , Apple doesn't really want us to replace our PCs ...

I am going to do a little more sketching on my Air and see how it feels... I really love drawing on the mini though. Just not sure I want to wait for mini with pencil to come around.

Haven't seen stuff like that yet

I'm not interested in a pen at all, so I look at stuff I find interesting...
Night shift I find gimmicky, but this could really be something I like

I know. I think many of us were looking forward to this ipad but personally it's not enough for me to pull out the wallet.

Guess it is now wait and see for all the benchmark comparisons with air 2 and discount prices in a month or two.

  • I for one am getting super sick of not being able to just use my iPad like a notebook like those people do on the samsung or whatever... apple is the richest company in space, they should be able to make at least that happen... !

  • edited March 2016

Air and iPad mini 2 look really old now ...
But I guess I can wait another year
So I don't feel like I need to upgrade now, but it's very tempting ^^

  • Think Christmas @lala...

I would kill for an iPad with 3D Touch
    Velocity, aftertouch, ...
I am dreaming of this since the iPad 1 ^^
That would really push things on the music creation side of things ...
    Maybe next time
Until then someone may have come up with a decent daw for iPad, cough, hello Berlin, lala calling, link is a nice first step, now give me the rest of the Schützenfest :naughty:
Live Intro would totally do ...
I can't imagine them coming up with link and not selling any product on iOS ...
But I am reading tea leaves

  • Update works fine on my air 2 , not sure about night mode tho looks like I spilled tea on my screen lol
