The future of iPad Pro 12.9"...

When Apple now have introduced iPad Pro 9.7", will we ever see any software progress for the bigger iPad Pro 12.9"?

More than six month after release of the 12.9-device, very few apps out there is optimized for the bigger screen with higher graphic resolution...

This morning I started Sampletank for iPad, and, this, and many many other apps, looks ridiculous on the bigger iPad :-(

But, will we ever see any intrest from the developers to redesign the UI for apps?
How many 12.9 have Apple sold really? How big is the userbase?
We will not ever catch any numbers from our dear Apple Inc...

I think that it will be only the graphical apps out there who will be updated for the bigger and greater screen for iPad Pro 12.9 :-(

Cubasis and Korg Gadget is two music apps that need more effective use of the screen area as an example...

How many of you Audiobus Forum reader have the iPad Pro 12.9?

I have it and like it a lot, I don't really care about the apps looking weird, the apps optimized for it really show its potential (mainly non music apps at the moment except notion), and I agree about gadget although it's optimized for the screen it could take more advantages. Cubasis it's not adapted at all, it's the regular version but bigger and the IK multimedia apps look awful.

I read somewhere a few months ago (December or January) that 2 million iPads pro had been sold.

I would say more apps will be optimized for it. I still get the odd update with support for the iPhone 6 and 6s screen on some apps so it's not going to be tomorrow.

  • Auria pro was optimized nicely. I have a 12.9 and love it.

  • I own it since the launch, with Apple foldable keyboard and pencil. I think it's a great product. All the apps I mostly use are optimized (Microsoft office, notability, Auria, 2do, and so on). iPad Pro is a "pro" product, so we cannot expect that all apps, I'm referring mainly to mainstream apps, will be optimized. We will have pro-apps, as Auria and some others. It's already good for me.

  • I have it. Loving it. Haven't really expected all apps to update for it. The ones I use the most look good on it. If a music app look bonkers and I only open it to set a sound and then controlling it via midi / Link (as I do) I guess that has removed some of the need for a reworked GUI, for me.

  • Really nice and love mine...

  • I don't think Sampletank looks bad, sure it's just the standard screen but larger, but what's wrong with that? Easier to play larger keyboards, and some apps with fiddly knobs aren't fiddly any more. It would nice to see more apps optimised and I am sure that will happen in time. I've recently been playing with a 3d app called Shapr3d which only works on an iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil! These things can take time, but its a great product as it is.

  • Got one just the other day, spending money I did not have, but was really drawn in by the screen size and so far it feels worth it.

Regarding it's future, it all depends on the developers. I don't think the apps that aren't optimized yet look all that bad. Yes you notice it, but once you start using the app it isn't a distraction or anything.

Probably the biggest gripe I have is the wide icon spacing on the home page, as there is way too much wasted space. They give you 4x4 in the folders, but keep it limited to 20 apps on the main screen?! Really poorly done by Apple there. It looks amateur, not pro.

  • Right now I use a 9.7 as my primary screen and 7.9 as the remote. Will probably go for a 12.9 in my next update cycle (probably the next one they release, realistically) and use the 9.7 for Remote. I hope that the apps are not optimised at all.. When I'm mid flow in performance I want the biggest, ugliest, most un-optimised and therefore easiest to access controls possible! (Apples built in zoom tool is amazing for this by the way. I Use it on ABr to super-enlarge key triggers that I need for that track).

  • I truly hope the future for the iPad lies with the bigger screen. The large Pro is wonderful to use, and I'd be disappointed if Apple didn't stick with it with future iterations. It just takes time to establish these things, and it doesn't seem like vintage, confident Apple to seemingly backtrack on the trailblazing here. I never plan to go back to a laptop or even a desktop computer as my main "multitool".

  • Love my 12,9" too. Just a bit unhappy now with my 128GB. Why not from the beginning 256GB. Its a bit a slap in the face of the early buyers. But ok, still 47GB space left actually. So it looks like 128GB is enough. You just have to sort your stuff a bit ;-) Same like on PC. The more, the waste.

  • I am a definite wannabe and therefore may have early-onset confirmation bias, but it's interesting within the context of the forum (therefore fellow music appaholics) that the responses from those who actually have it rather than are simply speculating about it are almost uniformly positive about their purchase/acquisition/ownership.

The tipping point for me is that Auria Pro is ready for it and this is (for me) the anchor store of my app world. If I have a concern it's only that I currently have two iPads, one exclusively for music, one for art apps and games. Because the 12.9 is so obviously a plus for graphics I suppose I will have to go back to co-existence, which makes the 256 a more expensive must.

Now it's just the small matter of the money and the missus.

  • I have one and I'm glad I bought it. The extra screen real estate is so key. I'm more than content with the apps that are optimized for it :) ......for now >:)

  • I have the 12.9 Pro and the Air2. I primarily use the Pro for music stuff. I love the larger screen size as well as the extra processing power. Made a huge difference for me on most of the CPU intensive apps. The Air2 seems to struggle sometimes with some apps. The larger knobs, buttons, sliders etc. is also a big bonus.

  • How does it feel the lug the fellow around? I fear that the weight and size would be a bit too much to carry everyday, which would totally eliminate the mobile aspect. (For me personally)

    this.

  • I'll go for a bigger screen at my next pad upgrade , won't be for a few years tho

  • I got the 12.9 128 in January. When 12.9 v2 comes this fall I'll get it and give my wife this one. The big screen is great for fiddly small controls but also for reading and watching vids. Wife is starting to complain that her Air 1 is too small for our retirement eyes.

Often this is the case, but not often here, so I disagree on this one.

Thank's for all kind of opinions on this subject...

Perhaps I´m worried for the future with no reason...

Yeah, the iPad Pro 12.9 is really a joy to use!

I love to sketch with the Apple Pencil and have discovered a super duper paint app called Paintstorm Studio for iPad...
The developer of Paintstorm has really find a cool way to make a resizable and customized user interface that some music apps should adopt!
One hell of a smooth paint app also! Like it more than Procreate just now!

Let's hope for a bright future for ours iPad Pro 12.9!'

And, by the way, when I lift up my "old" iPad Air 2 it feels so so tiny nowadays ;-)

    /Cheers from Sweden

It's very much like carrying around a standard folio pad like you would to a business meeting...the kind with the standard 8.5 x 11 pad of paper in it. Nearly the same size and weight, I think. Still fits in a bag just the same and isn't too awkward, although I do find I'm a bit more reluctant to carry it everywhere--maybe just because of the cost and fear of screen damage. My fiance says I got ripped off because I paid a lot for only half of a laptop, but I did manage a pretty good deal, at least. :) I just got it recently and haven't really had the chance to put it through its paces (my Air2 was struggling a little with my more complex musical arrangements) but have already found that manipulating controls on the screen is so much easier and more precise which is a joy.

Don't mean to fuel your want, but Procreate is glorious on the big screen.

I'd let people know if I wasn't happy. Also price for me is always offset a bit by selling the previous device, though yes even then it did run me a nice chunk of change.

I would say that it doesn't really feel mobile, but at the same time you could definitely carry it around and use it, so it doesn't completely eliminate that aspect. It's more like a laptop to use at a coffee shop, than say a device you pull out to type a quick tweet.

  • @TGIG : The 12.9 iPad Pro is So light and easy to take around!

  • How you guys or gals finding running Auria Pro over your use on an iPad Air2?

  • I take it around in a flat backpack.. I can hardly even feel it

Actually half of a laptop. Specially for it's weight while the size is just the same.

  • is there like a Make A Wish foundation for mentally ill iOS musicians, to gift me an ipad pro?
