Replace doesn't mean "doing the same thing". It more as a new approach to personal computing with its own up and downsides and it is pretty true, at least for me, since I haven't been using a PC for music production in almost 2 years and my productivity on that side hadn't slowdowns(being it already dead slow before going full iOS)
Agree with a lot of what's being said.
I don't agree that criticism is not warranted towards a company that uses the message they have. I'm of the opinion they have clearly swayed towards saying look this device can replace your laptop from the original Steve Jobs message of this is another device category.
I don't expect the iPad to be a laptop, it is clearly not. Their message however is no longer clear and for someone that really would like a laptop replacement with access to the great music apps on iOS, it is right for me to express my opinion.
After all this is a thread about the future of the iPad Pro. That future is yet to become reality. Best we say out loud what we would like it to be now, not later so that our voices are never heard.
Don't get me wrong, I have expressed my opinion to Apple. If enough people do....well you never know. Simply aging to vote by wallet though is an oversimplification. I will buy an iPad as it does some of what I would like it to do and I treat it as such. Yet that sway towards 'this device will replace your old laptop' is just marketing crap let's face it.
Given that for a lot of us, our iPad usage is 100% music, nothing else (maybe youtube), I wonder how many of us would jump ship if there were a decent tablet [1], as large as an iPad pro, running something like Ubuntu touch, if that were to transpire to be as responsive and usable for music as iOS is.
[1] (i.e., not obscure cheap Chinese junk lacking QC)
Just figured it that my point was actually that saying: your iPad will replace your old laptop is totally BS because it is light years far(or ahead) from that but looking at it from a perspective of someone who never had a computer(so going the iPad is the perfect substitute to the computer you never wanted) makes sense to me. It is a shame for a lot of reasons but it works.
In electronic recording and music making, we move files around a lot. I realise this is not easy for iOS. Yet doing things as simple as being able to put all my music under one playing device is not easy for iOS.
Moving files from one app to another is not easy.
I usually go by 'the wife test'. My wife does not understand tech, she just wants stuff to work. When I told her I can't get all our music files in one place to play under one app without connecting to another computer, her response to my iPad was - "well that's pants isn't it!"
I'm not stuck to any device. Will use the device that does what I need. So if the software came, I would use it.
Yes. Lovely. Please let's. I can use all my apps, right?
I would LOVE it if iOS offered a standard filing system. It's Apple's obvious intention not to offer one because that isn't their vision of a multi-purpose mobile device, a tablet not a laptop, for the person they see as less experienced and more averse to traditional computer devices. If they were wrong about that, their tablets would not sell very well.
It's human nature to want the world to revolve around us, and therefore Apple to revolve around us. Apparently, though, there is no sound business reason for them to design a device they don't intend to sell just because it happens to host a bunch of nice music apps they didn't make. The iPad Pro is an iPad, not a more traditional computer. Voicing our wishes that they offer a multi-purpose mobile device that meets all our needs is a smart thing to do. Claims that they're intentionally misleading people, or that they're somehow devious in not making the iPad Pro into a replacement for their laptops, are still not warranted as far as I can see.
Back to the world revolves around and poor selfish us take. Really it's not worth commenting on what you write. Or should I say, that I should know better than to comment.
If you want anything you claim, no matter what, to go unchallenged, then engaging in a discussion is probably not the way to go.
You are not discussing. You are challenging and twisting for the sake of. Discussion is fine and saying opinion is fine.
Challenging opinion is also fine if it's constructive. I do not find your comments constructive towards looking at the future of a product. Just constructive towards producing us and them scenarios and painting people in ways to make points.
Your opinion of my intention is apparently as misplaced as your opinion about what Apple is selling. I'm interested in knowing the truth about things. If you see a different truth, you can make an argument or just have to accept the disagreement. I can't guarantee my comments are going to be constructive for you. You're welcome to ignore them.
I gladly will ignore your comments then. Your intentions are easy to spot. I will no longer comment
Because they're not stupid.
I know you're not reading this, but I wanted to share anyway. LOL.
Their unique selling proposition (to my mind) is that they have provided/marketed/developed/pushed an environment which many others have populated. iOS is a zoo, built by Apple, the apps are the animals, we buy our tickets and visit. Yes it's a nice enough zoo, could be better, could have this or that, wish they did, but we come to enjoy the exhibits. There may be other zoos; but they have less animals of the sort we like to observe. So far.
Is thins anywhere?

We tend to forget that Apple cuts out the middle man and sells direct to the customer, incurring the associated costs in doing so, as in the Apple stores, marketing & worldwide delivery.
Can you imagine a world where we had to buy all our shiny new toys from Curry's, PC World & Argos.

Every where they are saying tablets sales are going down but nobody says how many people actually own a tablet. When something new hits the markets it is natural to have a steep curve at very first but at a certain point the market is likely to be saturated aka once every one got his tablet they won't buy a secon one.
Some articles are so misleading.
The future of iPad Pro (12.9) ? Mmmmmmmm ............... Will we see a iPad Pro v.s.2 (12.9) this September?...... Obviously, latest CPU, 4mb ram, but maybe this time a 256gb HD(like Apples little 9.7 Junior Pro?)
@studs1966 the 12.9" iPad Pro got a new 256GB option when they announced the 9.7" iPad Pro.
It will be interesting to see how they improve the 12.9" this year, if they do release a new generation.
This is the acid question. For now I'm holding off, but once there's enough money in the jar.....
I wonder if you can use Cubasis/Auria with split screens on the Pro. I am quite tired of switsching here and there every time I want to change a note or a parameter
I just picked up the 9.7 about a week ago, and a mini 4. I have 2 ipad airs and an ipad mini 2 here - none of which can communicate with each other via bluetooth, ugh. I looked at the 12 - was too big for me. My impression was it's a Surface Pro competitor - other factor was despite the better ram specs, they seem to be absorbed with rendering the bigger screen - the benchmark tests I looked at actually showed the 9.7 to outperform.
Love seeing the platform economics discussion here. Much of my grad school work in cybersecurity focused on these issues. Highly recommend Bruce Schneier's Essay CyberInsecurity: The Cost of Monopoly, also helpful to know about The Coase Theorem and its basis in the terrific essay by Coase The Nature of the Firm.
I think you've got it and also they will add the new screen enhancements from the 9.7 Pro. My hope however is an an even better CPU with more than 4GB of RAM. I hope Apple doesn't pull an Air 2 and the next Pros will be on the market for another two years. Speaking of the Air 2, will we see a replacement for the normal iPad this year?
What?, There's already an iPad Pro 12.9 with 256 GB of storage, it came out the very same day as the iPad Pro 9.7. It's the same as the 32, 128 GB version.
True tone display will probably be on the next version whenever that version comes. I actually hopes it takes a while longer than a year to update.
You're right - my bad. Also the 9.7 has the same A9X CPU as the 12.
They've got to do more than add true tone if they are going to come out with a new Pro this fall. The Apple Care on my Air 2 runs out this fall so I'm hoping there's an iPad Pro 2 to replace it.
I can't even imagine anything I would want ... that I actually believe Apple will implement. Maybe lose some of the bezel, please. Especially on that giant iPad.
Auria does look nice on the 12.9, but its plugins are another story. Using Fabfilter Twin2 is still like trying to program on a postage stamp. I appreciate it was bundled, but damn that interface was made for munchkins.
After all the dust has settled and I have adjusted to the Big Boy so it is now just normal looking/sized, I do find (amongst many other positive things) that I use automation in Auria a lot more than I used to, especially with Turnado....
