  • I don’t have the Pro yet but will buy one eventually. Maybe wait for the next model? Not sure. The larger screen size is worth it for my poorer eyesight and making playing the thing easier. The extra power doesn’t hurt either. I have a smaller one to carry around places. I don’t compare the price to laptops cuz I don’t want one unless it can be made to work and feel like an iPad. I can’t blame Apple for charging whatever they can get. That’s the way commerce has worked since like when? Forever?

I would consider this simplistic fuzzle if I didn't completely agree with it and thus, Sir, I salute you etc.

Thank's for all kind of opinions on this subject...

Perhaps I´m worried for the future with no reason...

Yeah, the iPad Pro 12.9 is really a joy to use!

I love to sketch with the Apple Pencil and have discovered a super duper paint app called Paintstorm Studio for iPad...
The developer of Paintstorm has really find a cool way to make a resizable and customized user interface that some music apps should adopt!
One hell of a smooth paint app also! Like it more than Procreate just now!

Let's hope for a bright future for ours iPad Pro 12.9!'

And, by the way, when I lift up my "old" iPad Air 2 it feels so so tiny nowadays ;-)

    /Cheers from Sweden

Anyone out there, any comments about the UI on the amazing Paintstorm Studio?

As I said, it would be nice to have same resize/customized functionality on some music apps...

  • Apple have just released a 29w charger (intended for a MacBook 12") for £39 and 1m & 2m Usb-C to lightning cables at £25 & £35 respectively, This will charge the 12.9 Pro at the intended rate.
There's a great deal of debate regarding price and whether this should have been supplied from new, but the option's there. There are cheaper chargers on Amazon for around £20 with mixed reviews but as yet no lightning cables. Personally I've been just about getting away with charging every night but I guess ill end up upgrading at some point.

It's interesting, in a perverse kind of way, to see a company apply a business model that basically says we don't care that our RAM is ridiculously expensive, and our new products equal a downgrade. If you can't afford it sod off, and ....and still become the most successful company of its kind in history! As long as this model continues to bring in vast revenue, they have zero incentive to change.

I also couldn't justify the spend on a current Pro, even if my Air died. At present my replacement would need to be a discounted Air 2, I suppose. In the future, unless the Pro iterations become rather less restricted, other than screen size and CPU, I'd probably end up with a touchscreen PC, at risk of lamentably leaving some brilliant iPad app purchases behind.

That's the problem; I have a large all-in-one touchscreen PC and a touch-screen (PC) laptop, both pretty good, but; it's the software. Not prepared to leave it behind...

  • I love my 12.9" Pro. Especially since I got the Smart Keyboard. About the only thing I use my Mac for anymore is the odd firmware update for a synth or something and managing my media server.

For Windows 10 Microsoft announced they wanted to help IOS devs port their apps to Windows Touchscreens...e.g

iPad Pro 12,9": 4 Gb RAM

iPad Pro 9,7": 2 Gb RAM

This is why there will be another iteration of the 12.9" Pro. There is enough of an install base even at 2 million to warrant it. Plus, with a lot of technophiles upset & baffled that the 9.7" Pro has just 2GB of RAM and there are very few features that distinguish it from the Air 2 (4 speakers, Pencil support), many will see the bigger Pro as the premium version of the iPad in more ways than just screen real estate.

There was a discussion here on the forum about iOS's bottlenecks and other issues with the way it makes use of all the power it has. To me, the law of diminishing returns is already well upon the iOS devices, especially the iPad. The larger Pro is certainly impressive but will next years model realy be that much of an improvement?

The A9X chip's a beast but with the aforementioned issues and now the 9.7" having less RAM the differences between the Air 2 and 9.7" are there, but not staggeringly so.

Either way, if graphic artists continue to take to it, those amongst our ranks in music production and even just the general public looking for the bigger is better option, the 12.9" iPad Pro will remain an Apple devices staple into the future.

  • I wonder how many 'digital graphic artists' there are in the same way many of us are 'digital musicians'? Serious hobbyists say (for the want of a better term and realizing it doesn't include everyone, but still)? What are they in terms of a market? I'm guessing far, far larger....

I was just about to say the same thing. But actually it is not about graphics but video and photo world, and that is where the new "pro" is aimed:
If you do videos on iOS you won't need so much horse power OR it is better trade-off having a smaller device with a better camera at a more affordable price. If you(I) do videos I won't have anything but one app running to do the job, I would rather need storage and portability and image quality. While, as far as I know, right now I'm able to make music With professional results on a pad I also know, no matter what, I won't be able to work on a standard video project on a pad: for example(far from standard tho)some time ago I shot a 4K, RAW formatted frames short movie which took 2 TB for 2 hours shooting session; there is no fucking way to be able to work on something like that on a mobile(actually it is hard to find even on a desktop). But for youtubers and the likes having 256GB, a 4K camera, a flash and a better processor is gold, it actually all you need.

  • All one has to do is see Apple’s own promotional videos and images for iPad Pro to see the market they’re aiming at. Business, design, photos, videos… draw with the pencil, enter text with the keyboard, listen to your music library on 4-speakers, watch movies on the big screen… I think I saw one quick shot of someone playing with GarageBand.

It’s highly debatable what “Pro” should mean. I’d think a standard file system and more connectivity would be the key, but what do I know? Apple must have a plan.

We love the iPad for music, but it’s obviously not Apple’s focus. That appears to be the source of confusion when people can’t understand why the iPad Pro isn’t optimized in every way for what we wish to do. Fortunately, what it can do is pretty cool.

  • I think our biggest hope for ram and other "under the hood" improvements is with the gaming industry

Schenk is right on, my shorthand 'graphic artists', in my mind, is anyone using the iPad Pro 12.9" for visual stuff, video, film, drawing, the Pencil based stuff for creation & editing.

And TGiG is on the money too. We will benefit from the increased power down the road in the iPad timeline that is added to cater to, and improve performance for, another field entirely.

I think Apple see's the Pro Audio sector tied up with DAW suites like ProTools, Ableton and it's own Logic. They will add to the burgeoning iOS music scene but not seriously, in their minds, compete with the 'pro market'.

They view GarageBand and it's functionality about as stout as the iOS realm will go. Auria Pro of course shows that isn't the case. Even so, with the miniaturization and advances that digital technology makes we will reap the benefits in our backyard whether they intend for it to happen or not.

    O Yes!

Not so sure about that. Garageband has always been more or less entry level. Wouldn't surprise me at all to see Logic in some shape or form on iOS, especially with the recent Pro angle they are taking. They also have Alchemy in their hip pocket, along with a new AU format for iOS, Logic would be a logical next step.

  • Music production isn't Apple's focus today, but it's still in the mix. If the iPad Pro is a longer term success, I'd expect to see progress in that area.

  • I think they will keep it up since there's Surface around and I don't think those at Cupertino are likely to give up on this market share

Today I´ve got an cleaning day with my iPad Pro 12.9...

Some of the concern of the future of the bigger iPad Pro lays in the inability Apple has to really make the bigger screen more Pro...

-Why so fuckin' big and few icons and dirs/drawers on the desktop?

    • Why must the preview of apps running showing in so big size when you doubletap homebutton? Why not lay in out flat on the bigger screen? This is not s tiny iPhone screen :-(
    • Why make it so fiddly to administrate your desktop/homescreen with icons and dirs? Obsolete I say...

This is why many of us has this love and hate relationsship with Apple...
We love our devices, and carrying them around 24/7 with alot of proudness...

Apple, give us more Pro-feeling with iPad Pro now!

  • While I agree that it would be desirable to have the OS and layout take more advantage of the large Pro there is a problem with that as well because it would make things more complicated for developers, I think. Little things like the layout of the home screen shouldn't be a big deal for Apple, though, and I hope with iOS 10 they will make some improvements for customization in those kind of things.

  • As we speak iPad Pro 12.9, today I have investing in a new charger for my beloved IPad...

Saw somewhere on this forum that you could buy the new Macbook 12"-charger (USB-C) and use as an superfast charger to your iPad Pro 12.9!

Now I can charged it in 80 minutes from empty to fullloaded!
    Thats nice!

Yes, it charges fast. In my opinion it's the charger the iPad Pro should have had since the beginning. The regular charger it's not powerful enough.

Yeah, of course, but, Apple is Apple, they are living on addons, also ;-)

There will be more troubles when all ours Mac only will have USB-C as only comport...

  • Had a go with both the Pro models today.

The 12" size is just great for music apps.

The 7.9 has a lovely screen, yet like my Air 2, it looks tiny against the 12.

  • I didn't get one. I tried it in stores and keep trying it to see if I am wrong. But I just can't get over the size of it. It's just too big. It's like our cutting board in the kitchen. I can see the logic in being able to use the screen space -- and when the other music apps get optimized for it -- its going to be amazing. But to me the physics of it seem a little way off. (Maybe it's just me. I am used to a regular iPad and use mostly a 7" tablet for others stuff).

Good effort, but I'm still saving my pennies. Mrs. Goodyear spent six hundred on shoes today; she's exceptional at getting her retaliation in first.

The iPad Pro also does seem expensive as hell too. But for me its still the physics of it thats a bigger issue. A little to big and thin for my likes. But I will still check it out again.
