  • One of the bullet points for this Gadget update is:

"- Native Support: Works flawlessly with nanoKEY/KONTROL Studio"

Would love to see a video demonstrating was kind of "flawless" integration is possible. And wireless too! Anybody seen anything on this yet?

I'm away from my iPad. How is the Kamata different than Kingston?

It's a wavetable synth. You can actually play melodies. But I am completely immune to and baffled by the current vogue for chip tune synth sounds.

    Lol!!

  • Hey, it would be possible to sample the Gladstone kits into a single file and import into abu dhabi no?

Shouldn't be too hard to do, create a track with the single hits and export the track to drop box or audio copy and paste into AbuDhabi.

  • Haven't got my iPad handy but....with reference to using IFX filters in lieu of Kamata having any...does the IFX filter have an envelope follower? If not, it's only a half-workaround.

AutoWah works quite nice with Kamata and the other Gadgets too :)

So, any tips on how to make Kamata sound as much like some of my spacey Animoog patches as possible? (I know, I know, only Animoog sounds like Animoog).

Nope, I think Kiev would be a better choice for that since Kamata doesn't do any 'fade ins/outs' when jumping between waves. Then again Kiev doesn't allow custom samples and on top of that is limited to 4 waves...

On the other hand I've been trying to make Animoog sound like 'wave sequences' on the Korg Wavestation but the path-editor leaves a lot to be desired for for detailed tweaking. For this it would be better to have a list with wave-index and time :D

Too many options make one loose focus...

Thanks Samu. I'll try Keiv again. I do like Keiv :).

I don't do videos, but here's a list of everything I can think of that I've seen in my few days so far with Gadget and the NanoKey Studio. In the list below:

    • Touch Scale refers to the feature of the XY pad where you can play scales by touching along the Y axis at different points.
    • Easy Scale allows you to play different scales just using the black keys (which are the ones that are normally the white keys on a piano).
    • Scale Guide doesn't remap keys, but turns on LED lighting for the keys that are in the scale.
    • Chord Pads are a mode where the drum pads can play pre-set chords

    • Drum pads automatically map to the first eight pads of London, Bilbao, and Abu Dhabi, and the four of Amsterdam

    • Drum pads map to the pads as seen on the screen in Gladstone, with the exception that pads 2 and 7 don't map (since there are 10 pads in Gladstone and only 8 on the device).
    • Changing the scale type in Gadget changes the Touch Scale, Easy Scale and Scale Guide to the same scale type, but not the key. You still have to change the key manually on the device. I'm hoping that was just an oversight and will be added in the next Gadget update.
    • In Easy Scale mode, the white colored keys (corresponding to the black keys on a piano) play the chords the same as the ones that play when the gadget is in Chord mode.
    • In Chord Pad mode the drum pads play the same chords as above.
    • You can draw the wave tables in Kamata using the XY pad. (I did not know this! Thanks @Seangarland !)
    • The eight knobs are auto-mapped to certain parameters in each gadget. I haven't really delved into the mapping scheme and whether it's consistent across gadgets other than to say the knob 4 is always volume.
    • There is no Arp integration that I can see between the two so the built-in external keyboard arp isn't of any use with Gadget. Not that this matters.
    • Integration is one-way, meaning, for instance, you can change the scale type in a gadget and the scale type will change in the NanoKey, but not the other way around.

There may be more to the integration than that, but that's what I've noticed so far.

  • Regarding Kamata:

Personally I'm not a chiptune fan, but I still enjoy Kamata. The basic wavetable oscillator can be harsh/static, but turning on 'detune' makes a difference.
Also the IFX help smooth things out, I like using the phaser on it.

Kamata is good to layer with other gadgets to give them some rough PPG like character.
I use one gadget for the 'body' of the sound and add Kamata (playing the same melody) to add some lo-fi harmonics.

Here Kamata is layered with Darwin. First 4 bars is Darwin only, then Kamata is added.
I recorded wavetable changes. Last 4 bars is Kamata only:

That's a good demo. I think that Kamata has a lot of flexibility in editing its parameters. I wouldn't consider it just chiptune. I foresee a lot of "happy accidents" in tweaking around in Kamata.

  • Bug fix update available, fixes duplicate function and other minor fixed and improvements.

??? Would love to check it out, but there is no video at that link.

  • All my mono user samples have noise on the right channel since the last gadget update 2.5.1. Stereo samples are fine.

My other iPad still has 2.5.0 and no noise on the mono samples.

    Can anyone with 2.5.1 confirm?

  • I finally pirouetted off the fence and landed in Kamata garden. I'm back into liking Gadget again. The recent improvements are really making a difference, hope new Gadgets keep coming.

I can confirm. iPad Pro 12.9. Noise on the right channel using own samples in Bilbao. Was fine prior to 2.5.1.

    Thanks, I have a Pro 9.7.
@Samu told me his Air 2 with 2.5.1 doesn't have it. So it might affect Pro only...

For anyone interested, here's a demo:

Same song old iPad with Gadget 2.5.0

Both those devices (9.7 & 12.9 iPad Pro) are based around the A9 so there should potentially be a glitch on 6S and 6S+ as well but I don't have a 6S or 6S+ to test with...

I really wish there was a better way to get in touch with Korg...
Anyone brave enough to bug them on Twitter about this???

  • Good point about the 6S (iPhone SE has A9 too).
Any Gadget users with one of those?
I think I'm going to start a thread on the Korg forum

They have already responded to someone about this issue on Twitter

  • Cool, thanks.

  • Hmm... This kinda confirms that Twitter is the fastest way to reach the Gadget devs...

  • They've never replied to any of my questions on Twitter.

Right but just don't trust Google Translate to do a proper job of translating English to Japanse. It's way too easy to insult the reader that way...

  • When I open Gadget, it turns off the WiFi! Makes buying IAPs a bit of a No-No, which I'm guessing isn't what Korg want. I also can't report this bug using their in-app bug reporting for the same reason. Anyone else getting this?
