Haven't gotten any of the extra gadgets, but Kamata interests me the most.

Kamata, is the one I didn't buy. Not too keen on chip tune. I understand it's better than that, but still not for me.

Firstly, I got Madrid, and was delighted with the quality of the samples, the controls and the beauty of the design. Then, after uhming and ahing, I treated myself to Gladstone. Initially, I'd thought to give it a miss, as I already have so many great drum machines. But now I'm so glad I took the plunge. Superb sounds, which work surpringly well alongside the existing rhythm components.

  • I do admit I'm a Gadget Junkie and have all the IAPs, iM1 with all IAPs and Module with almost all IAPs and well, I'm still waiting for an opportunity to mess with the nanoKEY Studio in person before I decide if I will get one or not...

  • I can't reproduce that. Did you try resetting your iPad?
Their in-app bug report redirects to this page: https://support.korguser.net/hc/en-us/requests/new

  • After reading musings from @JohnnyGoodyear and others about im1 I revisited it. What a cool architecture that synth has. And as others have said the presets are dated but there are tons of really interesting samples to combine into new sounds

  • @Lady_App_titude My apologies. The discussion about how the nanoKEY works with Gadget is here:

Still loving KORG Gadget, including the new gadgets. Created another side band with my other daughter, this one 8 years old. Like the previous collab with my 6 year old, this was all created by my daughter. I now have two side bands!

Your daughter is so punk I'm dying. That song is perfect. Seriously, release a record with 23 of those tracks, us a Brooklyn or Berlin mailing address: 8.7 on Pitchfork next week. GUARANTEED.

Thanks, I should have tried that before (actually I thought I had) but that seems to have sorted it. Now I have to wrestle with if I will use Bilbao and Abu Dhabi enough to justify getting them!

If you're even remotely interested in using your own samples inside Gadget these are just about the only Gadgets that will allow that for now. Both mangle the samples in their own way, one doesn't replace the other...

I do wish there was a way to share samples between the Gadgets(Sample Pool) without having to import them twice into both Gadgets...

    @PhilW
Initially I bought Bilbao (full price at that moment) no regrets. As Samu said, the only way to go if you want to use your own samples in Gadget, not necessarily percussion. 16 samples (each 5 secs max unfortunately) means you can also use it for vocals, etc.

With the 50% off it's worth it for the factory sounds (and interface) alone, in my opinion.
Same goes for Abu Dhabi, different approach then Bilbao. Has 'reverse', Bilbao doesn't. 10 sec max sample time. For me Abu turned out more inspiring then I'd thought.

Personally I'd get Bilbao first, see if you like the whole sample import routine.

You can :) Not sure when they changed that.

Whohoo, must be one of those 'silent' undocumented improvements :)

Next step would be to be able to access all AbuDhabi factory samples in Bilbao and vice-versa.
And to kick it up a notch be able to access all factory and user samples in all Gadgets that use samples.
(Say Bilbao samples in London and London samples in Bilbao and user samples in Kiev etc.).

Thanks for finding this. It must be one of the 'new' features in one of the more recent updates :)
(Who knows, maybe in preparation for a new Sampler-Gadget hehe).

This would be one of the most anticipated music app update ever I guess... A dream come true...
Being able to sample directly in Gadget would make me gain 2 hours per project (+ to edit samples, at least to loop/timestretch/pitchshift them, don't stop the dream lol...)...

Note : currently, I samble/trim my loops in beattime, transfer them to BM2 via audioshare, timestrech/pitchshift them and chop them to files in BM2, then I transfer the chops in audioshare via dropbox, then I convert the AIFF chops to wave one by one in audioshare (Aaaaaah, if only you could process several file at once in audioshare), then I "open in" the chops one by one in audiocopy (copy does not work on my ipad, I have to open in), then I import sample from audiocopy to Bilbao one by one in Gadget.... about 2 hours of pleasure just to be able to play with a chopped loop in Gadget...

A good start to drop the AudioCopy dependency would be to allow 'Open In...' to send Samples to Gadget :)
The imported samples should at least end up in the same 'pool' that is now shared between Bilbao and AbuDhabi.

Korg knows how to do touch-screen sampling properly (yeah yeah, too much playing with the Kronos).
Imagine being able to 'freeze' tracks inside Gadget and copy the result to the 'pool', that would be huge too...

I'm doing most my sampling in Cubasis...
(Hope it will get time/pitch-stretch in the next update).

@Samu told me his Air 2 with 2.5.1 doesn't have it. So it might affect Pro only...

Someone with an iPad Air 2 on Korg's Facebook reporting the glitch. Apparently it's not isolated to the A9 models.
Anyway, I've sent a bug report on their site yesterday.

  • Still no glitches on my Air 2, just update to iOS9.3.3 too...

You might want to save all the slices to Dropbox rather than to Audiocopy. It's a lot quicker to import the slices to Bilbao from Dropbox than it is from AudioShare (much less menu diving).

An alternative to BM2 (and having to convert from AIF to Wav) might be IMPC Pro. It has quite could slicing and export.

  • ^ or save yourself 2 hours by slicing in Abu Dhabi with the markers ;)

Or record from BM2 into a single file with each slice triggered at equal spaces/timing. Then, if it's not more than 10 secs put this into Abu (saving you having to mess with the tiny Abu slice controls).

Or, once the slices are evenly spaced, put into BlocsWave and use the slice and flatten tools to prep all your slices very quickly to 'pads' - then batch export all the pads in one go to AudioShare and batch export out in one go to Dropbox. BlocsWave could also probably do the time stretching/ pitch shifting. It just doesn't let you move slices off the grid.

Dropbox might be fine for those occasions when fast internet access is available but without internet access Dropbox is useless :(

And really what's the point of sending files over the internet when the only thing it's needed for is sending files between apps on the same device? (This is but one of the many reasons I've been pushing for iCloud Drive/Document Picker support so hard, direct access to AudioShare, Documents5, iFiles 2 as few examples).

AudioCopy has an 'edge' over DropBox as it doesn't need any network connection and it too accepts *.wav file via 'Open In...' so an app doesn't even have to support AudioCopy to be able to export to it.

I'd be happy if Gadget accepted *.wav (or *.zip files with multiple *.wav) files via 'Open In...'

Yep. All true. But I'm just saying that right now, if you do have fast internet access you'll find Dropbox a lot quicker - because you can flick through the pads and assign the samples without it taking you out of the Dropbox folder.

  • Someone please post a selection of photos or video detailing this process. Sounds revolutionary! Like a floor-vote insurrection at a political convention!!

Not an option : the 10 secondes limit is too short for most of my samples, you cannot timestretch the sample to make it match your project tempo and (most important) Abu Dhabi induces a lot of click/pops due to the lack of transient detection (last time I tried it at least, maube they improved that but I doubt it).

Too complicated process for me (building a sample with slices at equal places...), but I will definitly try your dropbox trick to import quicker in Bilbao (and avoid conversion as Gadget supports AIFF files with no problem) and I guess I will give a new try to iMPCPro (even if the MPC lover and over 15 years user in me cannot forgive retronyms for what they did with the MPC adaptations on iPad... I have to admit that I dislike this company after testing and trying to love almost all of their apps).

Thanks to you all for your answers. Peace.

+1 this, I recently came back to Gadget, and was surprised at how quickly I was able to load the pads in Bilbao using Dropbox.

I just wanted to tell you 1000 x thank you man...
You're the boss, you just changed (a bit) my life dude.

I never realized that I could use dripbox between BM2 and Gadget... And Gadget accepts AIFF file (which is not the case of Audiocopy... another limit to this poor plugin)...
Which means that now, I just have to import 3-4 recorded loops in BM2 to trim, timestretch/pitchshift (to match the speed and tuning I want to use in Gadget), and chop them (with micro-fades and "to files"...in 16 chops preferably ;-)).
Then, I simply export all the chops to a directory in dropbox and import them directly in Bilbao pad by pad...
    This is wonderfull...

I now have the exact workflow I always dreamed about on iPad... I can make the music exactly as I always hoped when coming from MPC to iPad... I almost want to never udpate anything anymore as it is so good !
    So thanks again man.

  • @Matt_Fletcher_2000 Oh Gadget Guru, I come to the mountain to seek your wisdom. It is true that this Dropbox you speak of seems like a good way to make kits, but as I import them one by one the first few go quickly but then the dialogue box covers the pads and I have to go out, hit 'sample', dropbox, scroll down to the folder, scroll down to the next sample etc....is there an even quicker/cleverer way to get this job done?

Sounds like a good workflow. Does BM2 have transient detection by the way? I can't remember.

Yeah, I have that problem too. Probably missing something basic.

  • @JohnnyGoodyear @richardyot

When you first open the sample browser, go to the import tab, import all the samples you wish to use in your kit.

Then when you get to the bit where you want to put them on the pads, they will be in the user tab, and you will not have to keep diving into the folders.

The leftmost 6 pads work dead quick, but the others get covered by the dialogue when you click sample and you have to re-open it each time.
Another trick is to make sure the gadget is full screen first, then you can get to all pads apart from 4,5,6,7 without needing to close the dialogue.
