Song of the Month Club - July 2016

What is the Song of the Month Club?

It's a place where musicians come to give and receive feedback on their work. Anyone is welcome, whatever their level of ability.

The spirit of the club is to contribute: if you submit a song for others to comment on, you should also have the courtesy to listen to everyone else's contributions and give as much feedback as possible. Posting a track and not listening and commenting on others is not cool.

The purpose of feedback is to be honest. Essentially you should give your truthful impressions of the song, whether good or bad. Negative feedback, if done in the right spirit and with courtesy, can be the most useful and can help the artist to grow and improve and correct their mistakes.

All submissions are welcome, don't hesitate if you want to contribute. Instrumentals are fine, but songs with vocals are even better. A bad vocal is better than no vocal, so if you are thinking of experimenting with vocals this is a good place to get started.

We ask that you only post one song per month in this thread - if you're lucky enough to be able to produce more, then please just submit your strongest material.

  • Something a bit rockier from us this month. From the deep, dark south (of Wales). Beware all you sinners you've got nothing to lose but your soul.

  • Oops!.... I posted my stuff in June, so here's the music I've done for the July month.

  • Someone didn't read the guidelines

  • All submissions are welcome. :p

  • Please only post one track per month, and be sure to give feedback to others as well. It generally takes me a minimum of 15 minutes to give worthwhile feedback on a track, so four tracks is asking for an hour of my time. If you don't stick to the guidelines, or give anything back, expect your submissions to be ignored.

  • My apologies @richardyot.. Will do in future.

  • Thanks. so which track would you like us to check out?

The first one.... Jazz Acid.1 please?

  • He's hard but fair. (Add suffix as desired etc.)

  • @orchardman Oh shite! That's this soul here on borrowed time then! Is this rockier style coinciding with the meteoric rise in Wales FC's stock? If so, after they've deflated Ronald's six pack on Wednesday & then onto lifting the trophy, can we expect some Angelic Upstarts type noise in August?

Cool, groovy intro with a thudding bass drum & your infectious Bass riff contrasts lovely with, is it the Gallileo organ? It sounds perfect in your mix this month. Wife's fingers healed? Her usual impeccable vocals are really shining bright & crisp showing you're the boss & in total control of that new mic of yours. Excellent.

Terrific guitar playing sir. Do you use amp sims? So much power I feel from what sounds like minimal strumming. All you string merchants out there are clever & blessed. Like that guitar at 1.00 but it's all great playing throughout & I love the sound you have. The chorus is stunning. Shivers down the spine & higher realm time. Felt the line "The Devils right behind you & he's wearing a smile." Scary but I'd much prefer him on my case than that physco duck staring me out from last month! Top shelf stuff. Congrats.

@Bluepunk thanks for the kind words good sir. I must admit I am rather pleased with the way that this one turned out. Yes it is the Galileo organ app. I've had it for ages but I am only now using it in anger. The guitars are all Bias Fx, the great thing about this app is the tone cloud where you can nearly always find a preset with the sound that you want.

As for the football, I have got a sneaky feeling we will win on Wednesday but I'm not sure whether we will beat the French or the Germans in the final. If we do win then an Upstarts tribute it will be in August although I might have some trouble getting the good wife to do the vocals. Maybe a Polystyrene or Siouxsie Sioux impression :)

Now that would be spectacular! Love "Germ Free Adolescence." Thanks for the Bias Fx amp info. I feel another purchase imminent.

Oh, sorry, I almost forgot. My mate has a ticket for the Wales v Portugal game but when he bought it he didn't realise it's on the same day as his wedding. If you know of anyone who'd like to go instead, it's at St Margaret's Church at 11o'clock. The girls name is Susan!

Nice tune. Good arrangement - like the guitar - would have liked a few more licks/ less restraint in the solo section around 3:50. Was also waiting for a simple drum fill at :35 before singer comes in. The verse vocals are nice - but a bit "safe" - I liked the chorus vocals very much. Good stuff overall

  • @Halftone thanks for the feedback I'm glad you liked it. I did do a much longer lead break originally but reigned it back in. I suppose this is the 'radio edit' version if you like. Maybe I'll post the live album version one day. I might try the idea of a drum fill in that gap at the start, I must admit I don't spend enough time on the drums in general. Thanks again.

my July entry - Compiled in Garageband again this month. Used a couple of sample loops (the intro percussion and the bassline). GB Drummer used again (I really like it!) and also GeoShred - like last month. (I've been using GeoShred maybe too much lately -- so I have one more 'epic' GeoShred tune almost complete for next months entry and then I'm moving back to Gadget - wanna play with the new update!) The acoustic guitar strumming and the synths that come in the later half were both GB instruments. I'm not sure about the mix on this - I think I had it ok, then I ran this mix through AudioMastering and I haven't gave it the official 'car system' test yet so..

  • Here is my entry for this month. Have a nice week everybody!
    Dimitri.

  • Hey, @Halftone! Nice entry! Loved how the song evolves and yet stays very coherent, not becoming multiple tunes in one. Excellent usage of Geoshred! The mix is very fine both through my KRKs and my Sennheiser HD280s. Congrats!

  • Welcome, @studs1966! Enjoyed very much your rhythm guitar work, both the tone and the groove. Nice chord progression as well. Jazz Acid is a good name for the song. Reminds me of Jamiroquai, without vocals of course. Very good!

  • Hello, @Orchardman! Another great pop song with a great vocal performance. The arrangement is great, from the tones of each instrument to the subtle rhythmic variations of the drum track. Really great guitar solo - the distortion tone is killer! Good job!

    V. nice bass sample/loop. And I like the Geoshred work, especially as it's so mellow and not shreddy (technical term). Not wholly convinced by the synth at the end. Might be the line or might be the sound....I think I also tired a little of the clap/snare by about three and a half minutes, by which I mean I started to notice it more than I probably should. Very lithe groove however.....I'm wish (esp. with that feel and that title) that there was a story to be told/sung to go with it all.....

Kid Creole and the Coconuts! Somewhere August Darnell is itching to sing over this :) Not entirely my cup of brew, but I actually enjoyed the more left-field aspects, and particularly the groove. Interesting effort Sir.

Thank you very much, @JohnnyGoodyear! In fact, I am a huge fan of Kid Creole.

  • @orchardman I see you're really into genre hopping at the moment, and this is definitely a number straight from the swamp. It's got all the right things, in the right places, and in the right doses.

Starting off with the intro, the organ is pitched just right, could be straight out of a Nick Cave song, and then the menacing guitar riff, followed by the delicious bass riff. Vocal melody and lyrics are great, and fit right in with the dark vibe that the intro establishes. Love the occasional call and response between the guitar and vocal.

Kicking in to the chorus there is a change of gear, some great harmonies/doubling, more flesh on the bones, and then the drop and we are back into the menacing restraint of the verse.

The guitar solo is not flashy, but pitched exactly right for the song: short simple phrases that drip with menace. This is exactly what musical breaks should be, adding to the vibe and emotion of the song. The second solo at the end is more intense and closes the song beautifully.

It's a great effort, with lots to like about it, the only possible criticism I could make is that it's very much a genre-based song, not breaking any new ground here, but then that can be said for 99% of all music. Overall I really liked the dark vibe, and the fact that it's a good well-written and well arranged song.
