  • @studs1966 I quite like late 60s/early 70s jazz-funk as well as the 90s Acid-Jazz sound, so this track has lots of elements in it that I enjoyed listening to. I liked the fact that you also included some genre-defying electronic sounds in with the hammond organs and guitars, the filtered synth lines meandering in and out in between the more traditional sounds definitely added some spice.

I thought the track was too long though, some judicious editing to bring it down below 5 minutes would make it a lot more interesting, because I don't think there's enough musical evolution in there to justify the 10 minute length. For example the drums lack any kind of real variation (like some different phrases and fills), and the bassline, which is really cool, doesn't change throughout the track - so essentially you're relying on the hammond phrases and the drops to maintain interest, but I think it could all be condensed down into half the time. The outro is completely unnecessary, a simple fade out of the full arrangement would work better IMO. The intro is also about 8 bars too long, the bass could come in on bar 3 :)

The guitar is really good, I love the choppy funky rhythms it's playing, the organ phrases are great. The organ is definitely the highlight, and adds a lot of nice melodic interest to the track, lovely jazzy breezy playing. If you are paying those guitars and that organ then I tip my hat to your musicianship, because that is some fine keyboard playing. But a criticism that I often make to fine musicians is that for a listener there is a difference between a jam and a song - musicians love jamming, but for listeners it works better if the music is edited down to just the more essential bits, so that we are left wanting more, rather than the track overstaying its welcome.

  • OT. If anyone, not Welsh, wants to support them this evening, here's an easy to learn version of the Welsh national anthem. No one would ever know as you sing along.

My hen laid a haddock on top of a tree
Glad barks & centurions throw dogs in the sea
My guru asked Elvis and branded Dan's flan
Don's muddy bogs blocked up with sand
Dad, Dad! Why don't you oil Aunty Glad?
When oars appear on beer bottle pies
Oh butter the hens as they fly.

    Thanks to North Wales Nostalgia.

Brilliant. Will indeed be supporting the Boyos from this far Texan outpost. Denmark, Greece and now, why not, Wales? Although to answer my own question: The Germans. Although, although, in my confused late-night mind I am hoping for a France-Germany classic which the hosts somehow sneak....

    Bread of Heaven etc.

  • After a Gadget overload induced break, the new update inspired me to Gadget some more !

I'm using 'Gladstone' for all the drums and 'Madrid' for all the basses - apart from a bit of real fretless bass (my new instrument) at the very end, recorded in Cubasis. There's a smattering of the mellow tape sounds in there too.
    Mastered on the desktop.

  • @Igneous1 Selfishly I am grateful for the chance to hear these new noises put in the context of a tune, so thanks for that. Especially the mellow tape sounds. Perhaps it's because of these that this tune puts me in mind of some film score music for something involving Robin Hood or Ivanhoe. Or the BBC versions of these cultural products circa 1970 something. Tunics, forest glades and fair ladies with excellent personal hygiene considering the period.

  • Something bit different for me. This is my pre album release mental flossing.

    Many cheers Mister Goodyear !

If anyone is interested, there were three instances each of Madrid, Gladstone and the mellow tape library. Perhaps the folk-esque feel was due to a crafty mini section in 12/8 ?

Thank you for your review. Actually, I listen to a lot of U.S House/Garage music. I make most of my music as a 12" mix. But yes your right, it was a bit long. I'll try & shrink them up a bit next time. ;) Most of my Listening(which is not a reggae) are Artists like, Deep Swing(anything from there Sulfuric label), Full Intention, Kings of Tomorrow, Jon Cutler, Grant Nelson, Richard Earnshaw, Axwell, etc, & Latin/Brazillian House......... Traxsource.com/Hed Kandi stuff............ Then there the other end of the Spectrum, loads, & & loads of Reggae/Dub....... King Tubby/ The Scientist/ Lee "Scratch" Perry, ect. Being that Brixton was my little Jamica, & I've lived in Croydon, once upon a time, Lol. I would of loved to share with everybody, more music I've made, but one a step at a time. Next month, if it's ok, I'll send a Remix, with original song of the Artist(remembering what you wrote about submitting remixes) instead..... Actually,....... maybe that maybe an idea?...... Have a Song of the Month(what we've all made ourselves already), & a Remix of the month?.......... But thanks once again for your input..... Respect @richardyot.... B)

Hello, @Orchardman! Another great pop song with a great vocal performance. The arrangement is great, from the tones of each instrument to the subtle rhythmic variations of the drum track. Really great guitar solo - the distortion tone is killer! Good job!

@theconnactic thanks for feedback I'm glad you enjoyed the song. The guitars are all Bias fx and as I said in a previous response the Tonecloud feature where people can share presets means there are always great sounds on there to try. I think the lead sound on the track was a telecaster preset I down loaded.

  • @richardyot said:
@orchardman I see you're really into genre hopping at the moment, and this is definitely a number straight from the swamp. It's got all the right things, in the right places, and in the right doses.

Starting off with the intro, the organ is pitched just right, could be straight out of a Nick Cave song, and then the menacing guitar riff, followed by the delicious bass riff. Vocal melody and lyrics are great, and fit right in with the dark vibe that the intro establishes. Love the occasional call and response between the guitar and vocal.

Kicking in to the chorus there is a change of gear, some great harmonies/doubling, more flesh on the bones, and then the drop and we are back into the menacing restraint of the verse.

The guitar solo is not flashy, but pitched exactly right for the song: short simple phrases that drip with menace. This is exactly what musical breaks should be, adding to the vibe and emotion of the song. The second solo at the end is more intense and closes the song beautifully.

It's a great effort, with lots to like about it, the only possible criticism I could make is that it's very much a genre-based song, not breaking any new ground here, but then that can be said for 99% of all music. Overall I really liked the dark vibe, and the fact that it's a good well-written and well arranged song.

@richardyot thanks for the detailed feedback I'm glad you enjoyed the track. We took the conscious decision, alittle while back, to try and make more'traditional' sounding stuff mostly using the iPad. Although there is a synth hidden away just after the second chorus on this one as well as a percussion loop I took from launchpad.

I do have an iPad stuffed with synth apps and beat machines so you never know we may change direction one day although there are lot of people on here who are much better at making electronic/soundscape music then I will ever be.

At the end of the day the beauty of music is its diversity and that's also the great thing about this thread. Thanks again. :)

I agree with this. Weird as it is, SOTMC is my favorite radio station these days :)

  • @studs1966 This gets the gyration glands going sir! I tried, but failed to dance for the whole 10 mins. Got to 5 then collapsed in a pile on the floor.

I agree with Richard. His review is so thorough & detailed that I would only be duplicating his views. I could hear this in a game show from either of the decades mentioned. Contestants manically fighting their way around a studio collecting goody tokens.

Solid, deep thumping beat which could benefit from fills or what may help is the addition of some Latin type percussion. Can hear some bongo flicks opposite the snare to add some variety. Not all the time....just to build up on the dynamics. Maybe a tad too much "tssshh" coming from the hats. They are very bright but doesn't distract from enjoying your skills & talent as a musician. Happiness flows throughout.

  • Hello again. More of the same toot from me this month, got no further with Modstep/Cream but are we downhearted?!? Ahem...

Anyway a 'funny' thing happened. I read that neo-nazi/anti-semites insert the word 'echo' into the title of things on-line as a kind of signal to show them for the scumbags they are. It was in a proper paper and everything. You may or may not have been aware that I used the name 'dot echo dot' to put my music on Soundcloud. Now as a fully paid up, sandal wearing, mung bean eating Guardianista I felt there was no way that could go on so I have changed the name, and hence the Soundcloud site. I have rather unimaginatively gone with 'dot edit dot'. Bit embarrassed about that one but there u go. So for u kind souls that followed me would u consider following the new page instead? (I had 27 followers and so I don't think the news will shake contemporary music to the core). What's also effing annoying is that Soundcloud are having trouble with the new account, goodness knows why, and so I'm struggling with it full stop. I hope the link works.

The new one is Dog, and you may choose to think of it as a bit of a comment on the disastrous Brexit fiasco, you may not, it is up to you. The tribal sounding stuff at the end is a load of my vocal loops mashed up with a load of effects, all done in an entirely unscientific way but I liked the outcome. Used a lot of Saturn on this one. Tried to finally use Turnado too but it is bloody annoying so I switched it off in the final mix and refused to talk to it for some considerable time.

As a fellow mung-bean botherer I can see your name-change-thinking. No problems with SC here.

As for 'Dog', I hate to be a cow but I wish the first verse/whatever wasn't repeated. I'm tart for more words at all times, especially when there's an issue at stake here. Would have liked more to chew on is all. Love the bleep and burp backing.

For me (Clive) it's a song of two halves. Up to 3.55 and thereafter. Like both, the mash-up is great, might like it to get yet more mad. BUT I'm also sitting at my desk on a warm afternoon between analyzing data etc when this piece might be better listened to on a morphine drip (a favorite previous destination) or with gritted teeth and surrounded by the last fires the world has to offer. And much louder also would be good. Keep on.

That is the most literal acid jazz I've heard, love it, reminds me of Galliano, snowboy and some of those 90s bands but with the extra 303 it always needed.

Something a bit rockier from us this month. From the deep, dark south (of Wales). Beware all you sinners you've got nothing to lose but your soul.

Like the production, pretty smooth/commercial sound and the chorus I can still remember as I type this so must be catchy.

my July entry - Compiled in Garageband again this month. Used a couple of sample loops (the intro percussion and the bassline). GB Drummer used again (I really like it!) and also GeoShred - like last month. (I've been using GeoShred maybe too much lately -- so I have one more 'epic' GeoShred tune almost complete for next months entry and then I'm moving back to Gadget - wanna play with the new update!) The acoustic guitar strumming and the synths that come in the later half were both GB instruments. I'm not sure about the mix on this - I think I had it ok, then I ran this mix through AudioMastering and I haven't gave it the official 'car system' test yet so..

Like the bassline on this, the mix sounds pretty good/balanced even through ipad speaker, will give it a listen later on headphones

Here is my entry for this month. Have a nice week everybody!
    Dimitri.

Was not expecting where this went from the intro beat but it works well, Prince meets Ronny Jordon. Not a big fan of the electric piano sound, a dirty rhodes I think would sound better

  • Hey, @crouchie! Loved the beat of this song, and the slightly oriental vocal melody. The percussive sound that begins at 59'' (and then at 2'58) stood out a little more than in my opinion it should in my KRK's (with socks stuffed into the ports, mind you): I'm going to give it another go with my headphones and see if I can confirm this. Other than that, and the fact I would fade the (excellent) vocals a little higher, the mix was very good. Congrats!

  • Hey, @RedSkyLullaby: interesting little pre-release. Got me looking forward to listen to your upcoming album. :)

  • Hi, @Igneous1! First of all, nice intro: the bass riff is simple and very good! I liked the slap bass sound a little less. The fretless bass break at the end was really cool! Very interesting piece. Congrats!

Curiously, the first piano sound I chose was the dirty Rhodes sound. But to be very honest, I liked the simpler, DX7-ish piano I ended up using. :) Thank you very much for the review!

P.S.: I sketched the song and made the general structure of the arrangement in Medly, then exported all the MIDI to Auria Pro. I ended up exporting the drum loop from Medly into Auria Pro directly as an audio file and then sliced and chopped and processed with some FF's. I had a lot of working in Medly (and even more fun doing that on my iPhone 4s).

  • @Halftone Your song.......oooh, I hear vocals....sooooo much! I remember the encouragement clubsters gave me last year to try when I had zero confidence or talent to bang some vocals out myself. Some were very persuasive & I'm glad they were. I'd love for you to give it a bash because your song, very good as it is, would sound more complete. A story to complement your musical prowess.

Steady, stubborn groove from your drumy mates over at GB. They do an effective job & some fills, or dropping the claps now & again could add some variation to the feel. Enjoyed your broody bass & how your tune makes me feel like I'm laying relaxed on a lilo, being gently raised & lowered by the peaceful swell of waves made by a cleansing, invigorating sea of ochre coloured, simmering mud. (Compliment).

Very good, haunting Geo work sir. Enjoyable, mellowish song. Congrats.

  • @theconnactic Simple. My favourite of yours. I'm excited by the path you're taking here Dimitri. Mixing up your legendary guitar playing skills with some electronica works wonders. The glitchy drums & the higher pitched sound/synth? highlight this perfectly. It's changed the atmosphere & assisted in the left field feeling I get. This is a "get down & groove to me however the hell you want to" song.

The bass guitar is brilliant. The ins & outs are inspired sir. Where do you get these chords from? They sound gorgeously obscure (to my uneducated arse) but always fit with a hint of "off the wallness" to give more than enough edge. You keep me on my toes, wondering what notes/chords you are going to play with next! Excellent!

A unique composition with interest & intrigue throughout it's 3 minutes.... (Perfect length). You are creating your own genre Dimitri.....wow! Top shelf stuff!

  • Thank you so much, @Bluepunk!

Cheers JG. As one of my favourites says, "loudness clarifies", and this comes across better at higher volumes definitely, but I'm realistic about what I can achieve. I kind of kept the 3 verses the same to give a bit of a sense of growing realisation/paranoia about the massive fuck up that is becoming evident as time goes on, that builds as the track progresses. Which may or may not be an excuse for my underlying laziness...
