  • Another track of dubious merit for inclusion, but in the interest of completism here you are. The only thing I did with this track related to iOS is to change one sound and use an instance of Svep. I'm currently rebuilding and remixing my older songs to fix errors and modernize before the files become irretrievable. New work will begin to bleed in soon.

    This is as close to a love song as you will find from me. Written for my wife and played during the wedding procession. It was held in the same park in which I proposed, so the whole thing wraps up into a little bow that way.

    @aaronpc You sentimental fool. I like that in a man. For once I would urge 10 per cent more clarity as regards hearing the words which I caught but had to strain for. Also, in the vein of crassly cashing in on a heartfelt work of art, I would suggest a children's choir for at least the last chorus. All round; most lovely.

    @JohnnyGoodyear I'd be interested to hear more opinions about the vocals' volume. I thought I had it up to near the point of distraction already. Do you mean the chorus? Or is it my funny accent?

    Thanks for the reminder to message Neo Soul- we really need to get that choir app in the works.

  • @JohnnyGoodyear Btw- follow the Soundclound rabbit hole for the lyrics.

  • Very nice symphonic pop, @aaronpc! I really enjoyed the song. Your vocal performance was very nice, and I would have put the vocal tracks a little higher in the mix. Looking forward to listen to your older stuff. Congrats!

    Oops!.... I posted my stuff in June, so here's the music I've done for the July month.

    @studs1966 firstly the confession, this type of music isn't my sort of thing at all but saying that the playing and production are great. I would have liked the lead electric piano a touch higher in the mix and as had been said by others its way too long.

    my July entry - Compiled in Garageband again this month. Used a couple of sample loops (the intro percussion and the bassline). GB Drummer used again (I really like it!) and also GeoShred - like last month. (I've been using GeoShred maybe too much lately -- so I have one more 'epic' GeoShred tune almost complete for next months entry and then I'm moving back to Gadget - wanna play with the new update!) The acoustic guitar strumming and the synths that come in the later half were both GB instruments. I'm not sure about the mix on this - I think I had it ok, then I ran this mix through AudioMastering and I haven't gave it the official 'car system' test yet so..

    @Halftone I liked a lot about this. The intro is great and it builds into a solid groove. For me the GeoShred is a little too high in the mix when it first comes in. I was liking the acoustic guitar bit and it sort of got blotted out. My only real criticism is that it just sort of fades out in the end, doesn't really build to any sort of climax ( ooh err missus) :)

    Here is my entry for this month. Have a nice week everybody!
    Dimitri.

    @theconnactic I wasn't sure I was going to like this one from the opening couple of bars but as soon as the guitar came in I changed my mind. Your guitar playing is really superb on this one and the scales you use are great. I'm not sure about the high pitch synth sound but that might just be my Sunday morning hangover.

    After a Gadget overload induced break, the new update inspired me to Gadget some more !

    I'm using 'Gladstone' for all the drums and 'Madrid' for all the basses - apart from a bit of real fretless bass (my new instrument) at the very end, recorded in Cubasis. There's a smattering of the mellow tape sounds in there too.
    Mastered on the desktop.

    @Igneous1 I liked this a lot, great production and I really liked the tune. I would have liked your fretless bass playing a little higher in the mix.

    Something bit different for me. This is my pre album release mental flossing.

    @RedSkyLullaby this would make a great introduction to a concept album. I was half expecting Geddy Lee's bass to come blasting in. I don't know whether it was my headphones but I was getting a small amount of distortion on the spoken word part I don't know whether it needs a de esser or something.

    Hello again. More of the same toot from me this month, got no further with Modstep/Cream but are we downhearted?!? Ahem...

    Anyway a 'funny' thing happened. I read that neo-nazi/anti-semites insert the word 'echo' into the title of things on-line as a kind of signal to show them for the scumbags they are. It was in a proper paper and everything. You may or may not have been aware that I used the name 'dot echo dot' to put my music on Soundcloud. Now as a fully paid up, sandal wearing, mung bean eating Guardianista I felt there was no way that could go on so I have changed the name, and hence the Soundcloud site. I have rather unimaginatively gone with 'dot edit dot'. Bit embarrassed about that one but there u go. So for u kind souls that followed me would u consider following the new page instead? (I had 27 followers and so I don't think the news will shake contemporary music to the core). What's also effing annoying is that Soundcloud are having trouble with the new account, goodness knows why, and so I'm struggling with it full stop. I hope the link works.

    The new one is Dog, and you may choose to think of it as a bit of a comment on the disastrous Brexit fiasco, you may not, it is up to you. The tribal sounding stuff at the end is a load of my vocal loops mashed up with a load of effects, all done in an entirely unscientific way but I liked the outcome. Used a lot of Saturn on this one. Tried to finally use Turnado too but it is bloody annoying so I switched it off in the final mix and refused to talk to it for some considerable time.

    @crouchie great intro with a good groove going. I would have liked the vocals a touch higher in the mix especially in the 'chorus' bit at about 3 mins. For me it was a bit too long maybe cut out the bit between the verse and the chorus but overall I liked it.

  • Hello everyone, I last posted here about this time last year, again while on holiday ... it's the time I get to really play with iOS music apps ... well Korg Gadget mostly. I was mega pleased it updated 2.5 just as I started my break.

    So here's what I cranked out on an iPad mini 2 on the beach, with a few ice cold beers ;) I look forward to commenting on your tracks too :)

  • Very nice beat, @TyburnTech! The synth tones, specially for the bass, were all sensibly chosen. Good EDM! Congrats!

  • Cheers dude!

  • @aaronpc

    Very sweet, love the sentimentally - from a mix point of view, I would really like the vocal up a bit (maybe 3db to 6db)?

    @orchardman

    I really enjoyed this, great vibe, excellent musicianship ... If you fancy taking the mix to the next level, I think you could try applying more compression to the vocal to even it out (some pros may apply multiple compressions, in incremental amounts on vocals to get them to sit well).

    @studs1966

    Bloody hell!! Great piece of acid jazz!! (This is about the first track) Again I really enjoyed this, my foot was taping away and I had a big grin on my face as the 303 played off the jazzy organ. Yep very nice. For mix improvements, I'd say consider ditching the the filter rise on the 303 between 1.00 and 2.00 - this 1 min transition sounds muddy. I think you can just drop the 303 in at the 2min mark, and it'll be fine, another mix suggestion would be to high pass the the hi hats a few more k to open the mix up a bit. But really this is just nit picking - thumps up from me! :)

    @Halftone

    Another great track - again really enjoyed the vibe, and there's some really nice controlled guitar going on. I feel the mix could benefit from some tweaking, the background groove is very nice, but the snare sounds too loud, until the lead guitar is is introduced, which is also very upfront - and then the mix kinda makes sense, but I would suggest making the kick more upfront so it balances with the snare, but turn the snare down, and push the lead guitar back into the mix more - so the track is more evenly balanced. Obviously this is just my opinion, so don't take too much notice of it. ;)

    @theconnactic

    Nice piece of art house groove thingy! Hey I can't say say what it is!! Which is excellent - keep this up - it's totally original!! :)

    @Igneous1

    Work of genius! This is more of jam than a song ... You've got lots of interesting themes, sounds and potential melodies happening here, I think you get get at least three great tracks out of this!

    @RedSkyLullaby

    I liked this a lot, the vocal is very hypnotic. It's a good teaser and certainly invited me to want to hear more.

    @ crouchie

    Oh wow! I love a bit of left field electronica - this is just great, very inventive. For mix advice I would say turn the vocals up! I once got some good advice on mixing vocals fro a pro and he said mix them into the track to your taste, then turn them up a bit more - this compensates for the mixer being too familiar with the words - something a first time listener can be frustrated with if the vocals sit in the back of the mix. Other than that - great stuff!!

    Thanks for the advice, v sensible idea! I'm usually guilty of burying my vocal a bit, too self-conscious I reckon. I can always hear the little bits that aren't right so I want to hide them out of earshot. I'll take what you've suggested on board though. Cheers!

    Hey, @crouchie! Loved the beat of this song, and the slightly oriental vocal melody. The percussive sound that begins at 59'' (and then at 2'58) stood out a little more than in my opinion it should in my KRK's (with socks stuffed into the ports, mind you): I'm going to give it another go with my headphones and see if I can confirm this. Other than that, and the fact I would fade the (excellent) vocals a little higher, the mix was very good. Congrats!

    Thanks Dimitri, may need to compress the rhythm a bit I reckon. Tried putting a bit of saturation on the final mix and I wonder if that made it pop out a bit more than it should've.

    @TyburnTech not my sort of thing so I struggle to provide any sort of useful feedback. It may have been my cheapy headphones but for me the high hats sort of drowned out the mix and we're just at the point of being annoying after a while.

    Thanks for the feedback on my song, I'll try the extra compression tip on the vocals when I get a chance.

    Enjoy your holiday :)

  • @TyburnTech @theconnactic @JohnnyGoodyear I've determined that the problem with the vocal levels is actually that it's being crowded out by the underlying audio, so I'll be bringing it down a notch and using some dynamic compression. Pizzicato strings are knocking out just enough words to interfere. This is exactly the kind of thing where outside opinions are so useful. Thanks.

  • Thank you for the review, @tyburntech! Dimitri.

  • @Halftone this one is up to your usual very high standards and has all the elements that I love to hear in your tracks: hypnotic groove, wonderful atmosphere, restrained instrumentation where each part is perfectly crafted to give just enough of a sense of melody while still leaving space around it.

    Love the Geo Shred guitar playing, and the melodies are really evocative and atmospheric, they transport me to a faraway place, lost in time.

    I also really love how every element in your tracks really belongs there, there is nothing thrown in for the sake of it, every single part adds to the track without being showy or poorly thought-out, every single part adds to the whole.

    Great track, and part of a great catalogue. Thanks for posting.

  • Wow! @orchardman this is by FAR my absolute favorite track by you guys! I love everything about it. Such a cool, rocking' tone. I even like those little 808 claps hidden underneath. Great work and thank you so much for sharing!

    Thanks for the feedback! Could be my cheap monitoring too, I notice my headphones aren't exactly flat - they up tick the bass quite a bit - plus the I guess I mixed it against the sound of waves rolling over the beach :)
