First submission in one of these threads. This is more a jam than a song, but it's plenty long enough.

Apps used: Cyclop, Blocs Wave (with a Cyclop loop in there sometimes, "Steppin' Out" by Joe Jackson looped by Yamaha's Kittar and cleaned in Audioshare), Audiobus, Final Touch and Auria Pro.

You, I bloody loved it when that speak and spell-like vocoder sample came, it really bought the rhythm of the track together. I wasn't quite getting it until then. More bass please, this would really kick off with a more meaty low end. I hear what you say about it being a jam, and so I know that ideally it might be edited a bit in length. It's certainly got something though. Like that Joe Jackson sample in there! It just needs a bit, thick kick in there for me. Great stuff though.

Thanks crouchie, really appreciate the feedback! Yeah, definitely too much high end and no thump, or growl to it. Would love to build up the motivation to form songs, but once every week seems to be my limit atm. Nine minutes is waaay too long for these SOTMs.

Oh and the speak and spell 'vocoder' is actually from a speak and spell sample kit. I don't remember where I got it from, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was in another thread on the Audiobus forum.

Hi, @jim5: very competent usage of the listed apps! The beat works, and all the timbres are well chosen. Mix well balanced. Nice song!

Thanks for listening and for the nice comment.

Yes, I got quite into that. Nice dense feels to it, and I loved the bubbling bassline, kept me hooked. Lots of little variations in there, nicely arranged so that each layer blended well. Great stuff.
Edit: just watched the video - loved it and very impressed. I have no effing idea what I'm doing with Modstep (and most other stuff, truth be told), but that was v instructional! Brilliant.

Thanks for the nice comment. Modstep can do so much it can be overwhelming . Watching the tutorial videos on their website over and over again helped me tremendously.

  • Hey guys I'd like to apologize for not being a valid participant ... I have had all my music and productions stolen from me and it has made me completely inactive musicaly. I just now started trying again and will be getting back into the mix. I'll be posting a couple songs I nearly finished before my bad bad day. I'll be listening and reviewing soon

Sorry to hear that. In an ideal world, your precious, personal stuff will be found safe with all recordings etc intact, then corner the culprit(s) in a disused warehouse miles outside "scream hearing range." Anger, frustration, revenge......could all be spat out in a future song from you. Good luck brother. Fingers crossed.

Awful, man! :( Didn't you keep a back up of your projects? With mobile hardware, theft is always an unfortunate possibility...

  • Catching up!

Hey, @jim5: nice intro. Liked the repetitive noise in it that reminds me of the dirty needle of an old vitrola. I'd prefer the song a little shorter, but perhaps the length would work fine in a club context. Nice song, and keep it up!

  • Hi, @fauxen! Your song, as jim5's, have a great intro. And like his song, yours also is a little long for my tastes for listening - but, again, it should work fine in a club. The groove is very, very good! Good job!

  • As others have said, your latest and greatest has a Industrial feel. As a Ministry fan, I can say that I enjoyed it a lot. The synth riff at the intro is really driving and well designed. The mix is very balanced, and the arrangement keeps moving forward. Great job, and congratulations, @crouchie!

  • Hey, @Richardyot! Loved the synth solo at 1'51'': very melodic, with a well-chosen, mellow timbre. The guitar solo at 3'37'' is also good. By the way, the mix is very balanced and clear in this one: more like Smashing Pumpkings than My Bloddy Valentine, in the sense that you chose to make the vocals more present. Great song!

I don't usually make songs this long but I wanted to show some of the Modstep and Patterning features in this video.

    Thanks for the comment.

    Hi

My first contrbution to this link.

    Drums : pop kit cubasis
    Bass: gadget madrid
    Synth pad: morning pad cubasis
    Guitars: ampkit
    Piano:korg module ivory expansion.

    I hope you like it!

Well done mate, and welcome to sotmc. Lovely little tune that, bit brief is my only criticism. If u used some of the guitar as a break and separated the vocal out it would make it a little less dense, give it a little more space and time, and I think that it is certainly a good enough song to warrant that. I also thought the instruments were really well mixed and balanced. Great stuff!

Thanks! As this was just a first try in Cubasis and evaluate the sound I could make out of it I tried to keep it short even though the song needed an instrumental interpause somehow at the end before the last ending chorus probably for a guitar solo. Most probably also some more takes of the voice would have make sense as some parts were out of tune but hey, when you have a hungry little baby to feed sometimes you have to take the best compromise between good takes and a sad hungry boy...
