  • first loop by Loopseque (drums, bass, percussion), 2nd loop is from Sparkle iirc a mangled Casio synth
filled with guitar recordings (mostly Telecaster/JamUp/Fender model) and the horn of a locomotive
(these engines were called warbonnet for their design and the first loop has a tiny bit of a tribal touch)
I collect such acoustic sceneries as (short) song sketches with a start/middle/end 'theme' to be extended later

    cheers, Tom

  • @aaronpc For the whole time that I'm listening to your creativity, I'm throwing the little I know about song writing, straight out the window. Again, it's the way you phrase & deliver your cool vocals, structure your songs but most of all it's the uniqueness. Sorry, I didn't listen to V1 but certainly no issues with vocals in this remix.

Because you wrote it for your wife gets full kudos (& a few happy tears) from me. To have it played at your wedding must have been such a beautifully high experience. Enjoyed your bass drum pattern & that you seemed to use the other non drum type instruments to create a rhythm in place of the usual snares etc.

Imaginative lyrics, although I was gutted to find out what "Freddies" meant at the bottom of the page. My mind was veering off into a much darker place than a supermarket. On saying that, our local old convenience store housed a crack den so.......

Fabulous stuff indeed. Can't wait to hear what you come up with next.

I haven't got Gadget.....do you have to program the drums yourself or are there patterns to slot into a song? Whatever, you've an authentic drum sound going on there. Enjoyed that sound from 1.07 to 1.16. Throws some dark textures into the pot. Followed immediately by what sounds like a couple of bars of Ian Anderson flute work! Excellent. The clever build up in intensity from 1.40 to 2.10 and those "aah's" work so well.

    Thanks @Bluepunk
Yes, I do all the drums / percussives myself in Gadge - I don't think it's a thing for drum loopage (?) Anyway, it takes ages and doesn't always work ! I'm used to doing the same in FLStudio on the desktop, so it feels like the appropriate things to do. I almost always use the piano roll as opposed to using a MIDI controller - which is a bit mad as I've got a Korg padKONTROL, but there you go !

    Thanks too, @richardyot
I must be getting the 'have some / more structure' vibe :)

Thanks also to @theconnactic, @orchardman and @TyburnTech. It's always interesting to hear people's responses.

  • @JohnnyGoodyear The start, the horns, took me into "Homeland" territory. Yours a less juddery, glitchy affair but it still travelled deep inside the soul like the intro music to the TV drama does. It radiates some kind of empty, hazy, eerie & very powerful feeling. Mmmm think I've muttered those words before sometime ago. I love that sound & style of play though, very satisfying. Could only just make out the vocals in this part but I can see that there are others far more knowledgable than me here that have given advice. The using of multi compressors tip from @Jocphone works very well.

What a sexy, cool groove to kick in the later section. The cross sticking is crisp & powerful. Kicks through your mix perfectly. Talking drums, when I crank up the volume, the bass drum sounds like it's been slackened off. It's really effective. What's your secret please?
The bass riff is funky & I think deserves to be higher in the mix when you start singing. Liked the "get down" at the end of the break.

It's great that I can appreciate & enjoy your very good musical contribution this month & not only your words & story telling talents. They work well together. Please explore further Sir Johnny.

Thank you Mister Punk. I am (gasp) considering doing an INSTRUMENTAL next month. Probably won't, but would be a good test. Perhaps, we could do some sort of bookends, you and I. Anthems for Pep and Mou as regards the coming season maybe?

Do you mean purely tub thumping duties because as you know I'm not very well endowed in the musical department! Will have to chat tomorrow as the OD's have gone through the roof tonight. Jools Holland played in The Castle earlier (the turret version...not the pub) so it was only to be expected!

  • Hey, @JohnnyGoodyear! Nice brassy synth and great effect in the intro speech: what was it? Very good lyrics, as usual, and the transition from the long intro to the actual song using "Amazing Grace" was a touch of genius - I'm very impressed! (that's a good exemple of creative use of sampling). Then it becomes kind of UB40-ish pop reggae song, and the fact the first song that has even a remotely reggae feeling in SOTMC, so congrats also for that. It's my favourite of yours, and the one your vocal performance stood out the most. Great job!

  • Hey, @AlexB: nice pop ballad! As others said, the vocals deserve a little more work: I didn't find it that much out: only a slip here and there that you could just correct by punching in a couple of words - or simply use Mu ReTune, but you'd need Auria for that ;) But I'm talking about production treatment: compression/fader rides for level consistency, and perhaps some (very subtle) saturation to warm it a little. The songwriting (melodies, harmonies and lyrics) are fine, and the arrangement works quite well. Congrats, and welcome to the SOTMC!

  • Hi, @jim5: very competent usage of the listed apps! The beat works, and all the timbres are well chosen. Mix well balanced. Nice song!

  • @richardyot said:
@theconnactic that's a crazy fusion of 60s jazz with modern sounds, and the squealing lead sounds like it's about to start playing "Apache" before veering off into a different melodic direction. Great guitar playing as usual, and another interesting sonic exploration.

Thank you for the review, @richardyot!

Even more praise goes to you then sir. The work you put into the drums is well worth it & the results are here to be heard & appreciated. Because you play with the time signatures in your tunes & do all this yourself, I can only marvel at your skills. Thanks for the info.

  • @TyburnTech You need to find the time to go on more holidays in the sun (might use that as a future song title  ) as you've made a top dance tune on this excursion & it would be a shame if we can't hear more throughout the year! Been some terrific dance tunes on show this month & with this tune you have ensured that you are up there in the dance charts amongst the gang of skilful jig merchants already on here. I find your song impossible not to move too.

The flicky hats (great pattern by the way) coupled with the immovable bass drum, to me, allow you to "do your stuff" above them with freedom. That dirtyish lead bass riff (sorry, I'm not knowledgeable enough to know how & what you made it with) is the star of the show. Love it. Teaming with energy & controlled urgency, I salute you.

I can hear this being played in Clubs now, or from the past it most certainly would've been a tune that I grooved to for hours in clubland sessions......without the need for a skip full of naughty chemical products to help! Professional mix. Clear & hard hitting in a cool way.

  • I just want a holiday in the sun. I'm out of here to warmer climes for the next three weeks. Sorry for any songs that I haven't had a chance to provide feedback on. Thanks again to all the people who took the time to listen to our song this month. See you all again in August. B) B) B) B)

  • @Bluepunk Thanks many much! This, and some of the other songs on here were originally written in a different time and place, so here's hoping I can still live up to such praise. Thanks to @markk as well!

Warmer climes? Where you off to.....the sun? You've left a heatwave behind you in South Wales! Enjoy your time away.

Thanks for listening and for the nice comment.

I plan to continue finding ways to integrate iPad apps with my hardware gear. I tried it few years back and it didn't work out too well. Probably due to apps not being as robust back then and the iPad2 being under powered. I got frustrated and I stopped using the iPad to make music.

I decided to try again due to seeing some interesting apps being released. I'm now using iPad Air 1 and it's been working out much better. Especially with newer/updated apps.

Something a bit rockier from us this month. From the deep, dark south (of Wales). Beware all you sinners you've got nothing to lose but your soul.

This has a really nice sound. Agree with the Cave reference from others. I think this is my favourite of yours. The organ is just perfect, adds a really brooding atmosphere, and the guitars don't clutter. Best vocal performance by far, really sits well. Mix is great too. V impressed!

Oops!.... I posted my stuff in June, so here's the music I've done for the July month.

Lovely vibe to this. I love that shuffling, 303 bass that starts at about 0.55, I'm an absolute sucker for that. It's a great acid jazz tune and I'm really impressed. Mixed beautifully; oh I've such a lot to learn!!! She's a beauty but she is long! Didn't bother me though, loved every minute of it. Did u play guitar/bass or use loops? Great stuff!

my July entry - Compiled in Garageband again this month. Used a couple of sample loops (the intro percussion and the bassline). GB Drummer used again (I really like it!) and also GeoShred - like last month. (I've been using GeoShred maybe too much lately -- so I have one more 'epic' GeoShred tune almost complete for next months entry and then I'm moving back to Gadget - wanna play with the new update!) The acoustic guitar strumming and the synths that come in the later half were both GB instruments. I'm not sure about the mix on this - I think I had it ok, then I ran this mix through AudioMastering and I haven't gave it the official 'car system' test yet so..

Great tune this, loved some of the sounds but I know what u mean about the mix/arrangement. At times it feels a bit sparse, a bit like a collection of sounds that don't quite knit together, but then what do I know? It has a great hook and thoroughly enjoyable listen. Great stuff.

Here is my entry for this month. Have a nice week everybody!
    Dimitri.

Liked this a lot, a little more experimental than usual and I loved it. The percussion/beat track made it for me, chopped and funky, great stuff and doesn't outstay it's welcome. Excellent.

After a Gadget overload induced break, the new update inspired me to Gadget some more !

I'm using 'Gladstone' for all the drums and 'Madrid' for all the basses - apart from a bit of real fretless bass (my new instrument) at the very end, recorded in Cubasis. There's a smattering of the mellow tape sounds in there too.
    Mastered on the desktop.

Is good that! It's got a really different feel to a lot of the tunes on here, it's great. Feels a bit folky in places without being in your face, and is brilliantly structured to tell its story in an effective timespan, not overstay it's welcome. It's brilliantly arranged, and I love the layered feel where there is always something slightly different evolving. Great stuff.

Like that. Reminds me a bit of Saul Williams. Now to check out you album...

Another track of dubious merit for inclusion, but in the interest of completism here you are. The only thing I did with this track related to iOS is to change one sound and use an instance of Svep. I'm currently rebuilding and remixing my older songs to fix errors and modernize before the files become irretrievable. New work will begin to bleed in soon.

This is as close to a love song as you will find from me. Written for my wife and played during the wedding procession. It was held in the same park in which I proposed, so the whole thing wraps up into a little bow that way.

Love it. Yes the vocal could be a touch clearer but it works, sounds lovely and the lyrics are great! Brilliant!

Hello everyone, I last posted here about this time last year, again while on holiday ... it's the time I get to really play with iOS music apps ... well Korg Gadget mostly. I was mega pleased it updated 2.5 just as I started my break.

So here's what I cranked out on an iPad mini 2 on the beach, with a few ice cold beers ;) I look forward to commenting on your tracks too :)

Oh yes! You hooked me as soon as the kick started. Effing love it. Turned the volume up straight away. Love the minimalist techno vibe. Another track that makes me realise how much I have to learn! The mix is blinding. Felt I was right inside it. Please can u come round my house and show me how to make stuff like this!!!!

Thank you for the fab review. The guitar was a looped riff. Then worked around the loop, with the bass(iFretless Bass). The drum sequence was done on FL Studio GM Mobile, then the riff was sent to AudioShare. Rhodes was done on Korg Module. Acid sound was sequenced on Rebirth. Recorded first on Cubasis, then mastered in Auria Pro......... The old girl(iPad Air 1) may need to be replaced as I was limited to the CPU spiking. Saving up for a Big Boy. Hopefully, I can do more?....... Hopefully Apple will release an update of the 12.9 Pro, then maybe buy one?

  • @JohnnyGoodyear firstly I must apologise for being so slow to review your entry this month, I've been letting things slip and that is not what is expected of the Master of Ceremonies.

I much prefer the second half of the track, from where the beat comes in onwards. I realise Mr Bukowski is a favourite among you literary types, and I have read some of his work myself, but ultimately that section of the track didn't grab me. The second half did though.

Great laid back vocal delivery, lovely tune, and personally I quite liked the vocoded additions. The only criticism I could level at the second half is that it could maybe do with more words, which isn't really what I would be expecting to say to someone for whom words are the main attraction.

I think there is a really good, but only half-finished, song lurking there. I would love to hear that second half fleshed out to something more substantial. Every month, it has to be said, your output becomes more mature, and yes, musical.

  • @AlexB Your song has an epic stadium rock aura about it, and the vocal melody is very good. I liked the counterpoint that the guitar provides to the voice although it does sometimes feel that the guitar is doing it's own thing disconnected from the voice - it might work better if there was more call-and-response between the two. The vocal is slightly flat at times, might benefit from a smidge of pitch-fixing, but that didn't spoil the overall enjoyment of what is a good and enjoyable song.

  • @aaronpc I think the new mix is much better, the vocals are so much easier to follow - and a terrific song sounds even better now. I love this stuff.

One of the values of this small cabal is not only the forcing to submit (nurse), but also the relative clarity that brings. A little like an email you've written makes more sense (somehow) when you know it's been sent/received/read by the recipient. Sometimes this is a good thing, sometimes not so much...

Having had a few days now and going back and listening I agree with you on the bits and bobs nature of this thing. Intellectually it makes sense to me, I understand why Chuck is first, then Amazing Grace, then the payoff, but music needs to add up to more than a thesis of justification (or be a puzzle for the listener, as though elect, to solve). So, yeah, point(s) taken. And thank you for making what I suspected clearer.

I swear I am going to have a parallel universe club whereby next year, each month, I am going to do a proper remake/second draft of all the songs I did this year....Maybe.
