The devices we all use here are proof, that apple does care about professionals, too.<

Eh? Sorry, I'm not getting how mass market products such as an iPhone, iPad and the bloody awful watch are aimed at professionals.

Okay, there is the iPad Pro, but that could and should have been supplied with pencil and keyboard, and with 8mb RAM plus 512gb storage. Still not there with any of those things, not even close.

Apple are not evil, they're simply greedy sods. Surely, there comes a point where billions upon billions could be used to make products a little more accessible to those without mega deep pockets - thus empowering so many more - and to genuinely innovate?

Not so widely discussed in the media are the underhand tricks they pull. Such as RAM being triple the cost when bought from them, or sealing Mac Mini's so that owners can't upgrade themselves.

to me it looks like most people can't decode the marketing talk,
its like listening to politicians, they talk endlessly and say nothing
and after all that fluff you leave with a good feeling until you ask yourself: hey, where is the beef?!? :)

  • For small in the ear headphones wired are better by design, they can be hung around the neck when not using them, they can't be lost as easily etc. Who will be first to release an accessory for the air pods which adds a cable so if they fall out you don't lose them I wonder ;)

wireless makes sense for the larger headphones.

Now if they went for wireless charging first that would have been a smarter pr move and the most useful for the consumer. It's the wires in charging which are annoying not the headphones.

  • We all want better tech, but timing is everything: too early and customers aren't ready for the new thing, too late and the competition gets there first.

Personally I like wires. I like to see a synth patched with loads if them, and a mixing desk covered in rubbery spaghetti. I prefer a wired mouse and keyboard and hate the way my Logic Remote app keeps losing connection with my MacBook.

Just been in an Apple store - prices are up on everything, average 15% more. And they've quietly phased out the 64gb iPhone 6.

Looks like an SE for me then.

  • Thankfully the 6S/6S+ will 32GB as base storage for the same price as before...

Aha, I spot an opportunity to get rich, selling a new product - Ian Tindale’s “A piece of string” (length undisclosed).

Apologies if I'm stirring things up again -- it just feels like a fire hose of "the sky is falling," and I went on a bit of a rant this morning. The class I'm teaching this semester covers a lot of CPU design issues, and we spent a few minutes talking about the iPhone 7, so I'm a bit wound up.

There's a quote from Wayne Gretzky -- "I skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it has been." Everything is going to be wireless; it's not a matter of "if" but of "when." Apple has decided to skate really hard towards that goal. Their success is because they've done this again and again over the years. Sometimes they're wrong, but the rest of the time they're right.

Wayne should know where the puck is going to be, after all, he made the pass.

It's funny how they really act like car salesmen, isn't it? And they're poring a huge amount of money into Apple Car while we're waiting for new Macs... Now it seems they finally realized they couldn't sell cars in the Apple Store and rebooted the project, firing loads of people because they no longer plan to manufacture cars but only develop an autonomous driving system instead.
And I think it's weird how they seem to always hand it over to Phil whenever something is a little iffy. They always have him tell the lies, it seems.

its just not a good idea to transmit that much realtime data over the air ;)
ask @SecretBaseDesign about bt latency ... he knows more about that than I do ...
thats why I can't understand he is delighted, but he also happens to make wireless audio stuff (if I remember correctly) that I won't use because it has to much latency for me to play (so to me it looks like he doesn't mind the laaaatency ...)

I'm not so much delighted as understanding of the engineering decision Apple made. They're making a phone that just happens to be useful for creating music -- but that's not the primary function. If you look at a Moog synth -- it's a crappy phone, and an even worse camera. No one is griping that their Roland drum machine isn't good for playing Angry Birds. We're getting a free technology ride on a device made for a different market.

Apple is focusing on making the iPhone better for 99.9% of the uses people buy them for, and they're moving towards where they think the technology should be in the future. It's not evil. It's smart business. And we are not locked out of low latency audio; the interfaces from FocusRite, Apogee, and so on, are excellent, much better than the 1960's era headphone jack. I expect the Lightning port to be present for many years to come; yes, there will be a next thing after that, because that's always the way it is with technological advancement.

    Apple should hire them.

  • Apple remove the microphone from the new new iPhone as 99% of users only text and play Angry PornBirds

I don't use my phone for music, and the syncing thing between it and my other devices has been a pain in the carrot so jumping phone platforms isn't an issue for me. If it wasn't for the SE 64gb I probably would.

What I find very funny is how the tec blogs are absorbing the apple pr,
Some just repeat the yada yada from the pr team,
    "The wireless future", lol
I have much less blogs to read now, gee and I thought these ppl had a clue. :D
It's really an eye opener how ppl absorb what they are told.

Haha, "the wireless future" is just like "the paperless office". :D :D :D

  • Like I said before -- beware the Apple echo chamber. I don't know about blogs, but some tech news sites are calling Apple out. I have to admit to being more suspicious of Apple's motives after reading The Verge.

The best is how they say... "to do something new that betters all of us." Its not just our phones 'upgrading' but all of us as individuals too.

    Holy cult shit batman.

Anyone who uses any computer is making music on a device that was not designed for it as its primary function.

And focusrite, etc still use the "1960's" headphone jack - its just a connector. They may use better converters or other electronics, but those feed the same connection everyone else is (or WAS) using.

Umm, with respect, this isn't that far from what's being used at any major event these days, the only different being the parallel port. Have a look at Yamaha's Dante system - a hundred channels of audio, video and dmx are happily traveling down a pair of cat5 or fiber cables. The IO racks at each end more resemble a snake box than a fan out cable, but this was an early step towards that.

  • Dante is fascinating! Somebody needs to port it over to lightning adapter and we'll be all set. End of discussion.

Instead we get Bluetooth headphones, yeah it's the future, up my ass. Lol, better not, there is no cable to pull it out again. :D

  • My 2cents
I think that what everyone in the world needs in this very moment should be a huge leap in battery technology: to me looks like that portable devices' power consumption is demanding more and more resources with such a fast pace while batteries technology isn't innovating enough to keep a good balance between design and functionality.
One example: iPad's battery cycle at minimum brightness almost doubles the operational time. I could do that with my ipad2, I just can't with my pro . it will be too dark for comfortable viewing even in pitch black conditions. I guess this was a deliberate decision so Apple could state a up-to-10 hours battery life.
This innovation is much needed, specially when we/they/whoever are betting on a wireless future because having a palm sized device comes to no use if I have to take around a car battery all the time
